How to actually enjoy exercise 1. Pick an activity you enjoy. If you don’t like exercise and your idea of exercise is jogging on a treadmill, flip your 2. Mix things up. Even after you find something you enjoy, switch up your routine from time to time.

Pumping iron and running aren’t the only ways to exercise and enjoy the health benefits from exercising. #6 Short Workouts are Okay If you don’t have the time or the motivation for an hour-long sweat fest, just go for a shorter workout. Regular exercise also can decrease anxiety, chronic illnesses, and prevent depression. Working out also releases endorphins, our bodies’ stress-fighters, leaving us feeling happier, research suggests.

In other words, working out can actually feel AMAZING, and it can even be fun. Learning how to make exercise fun can be a crucial moment in. Did you know that women who exercise to stave off stress, have more energy, and to feel better are more likely to exercise than those who sweat it out to lose weight?

Focus on the other benefits of exercise and you might find that getting leaner is a happy side-effect. A fun way to actually enjoy exercise is to reframe your mindset. If lifting heavy weights in a gym or running several miles is not your idea of fun, try to find other, outside-the-box ways to move.

Jump on the trampoline with your kids, climb trees, or ride your bike to the market. If you make a date to catch up with friends (while you happen to be walking), the exercise will happen while you’re doing something else you enjoy.   • I found out that I really like nature and hikes, so to work out, I go to central park every day and walk all the way back home (which is really far from central park). It’s a really good workout, and I never notice how tired I am until I get to my apartment building and have to walk the steps to my apartment.

  • Yeah performing an exersice that you hate, really isn’t working. I got a fitness subscribtion, because, everybody who goes to the gym looks fabulous.   • I always see exercise as a chore or almost punishment for eating the cookies, I’ve never thought about it as a time to catch up on a podcast or listen to a new album, I love audiobooks too and could put any of those on while doing a short yoga workout. It’s so strange that I make time for everything else in my life including returning that stupid rice cooker that didn’t work but not unrolling my mat and doing yoga for a half hour.   • I recently started working out again after spraining my ankle a year and a half ago. Before the sprain, I loved running, had gotten my mile time down really low, and was super proud of myself. The sprain kind of made me lose the stride I had going. Now I’ve been getting into yoga this past month (with Adriene, actually), and want to start running again but I want to make sure my ankle is strong enough. I’m realizing it’s mostly a mental block because I’m scared of hurting my ankle, but it’s healed enough that it’s time to start building up its strength again.

  • I just don’t think I’m the kind of person who will ever be a “gym rat” lol. I grew up running cross country and track, hiking, biking. But, I never went to the gym and used an elliptical or lifted 5 pound weights. I don’t think there is a problem with either side of exercise, but I too have an unhealthy idea that if I’ve not got a gym membership then I’m not ACTUALLY working out. Find what’s enjoyable for you that also gets you active. I think that’s all our bodies are begging us to do.

  • I quit dancing, netball, basketball, swimming and badminton clubs when I hit my teens and I regret all of them and now I’m too scared to join clubs because I feel too old and people younger than me will be better

  • you! are so inspiring and amazing, and it just took you under 15 minutes to verbalize everything about working out that I’ve wished I had the clarity to think through for years but could never quite get across to myself. The whole idea of reframing working out by taking “fitness” out of the equation in favor of the immediate reward of enjoying and rewarding yourself through physicality is such a simple and beautiful way to break down something so toxic.

  • I’ve dated a workout chick like this. She definitely had the barbie doll appearance, partially due to implants. But every curve on her was just hard muscle underneath. She could potentially literally crush someone with her legs like that girl in Goldeneye. She had an a lot of pride that was just wrapped up in her appearance and didn’t take any responsibility to her multiple mistakes such as getting pregnant young, broken marriage, car crashes, etc.

  • I’ve suffered from a serious exercise addiction since I was 15 years old. I’m now 34 and I’m still a slave to it. It was really bad when I was 16. I exercised for exactly 18 hours a day…. everyday. In the first few months it was new and exciting, however it grew to be a chore. I came up with my own name for it “exercise bulimia”.

  • i was running today and thought about how working out or doing sports was never a punishment for me and how grateful i am for that. i love doing sports and always go for the fun element. thinking about it now sports is the only thing i do because it’s fun and will also switch around when it no longer is, which is something i need to cooperate into other parts of my life. after a depression period and not working out for a while i got back into it by challenging myself with yoga (bless you adrien you helped so much). then when that went well i was feeling more confident again and low and behold a new challenge came to me. i was going to run a 1/4 marathon (10.5km) i only had 9 weeks to train and it was hard but it really pushed me when i finished it was such a relieve and proud moment. thanks for this video it has me thinking:)

  • this video was so great!!!!!! I have very recently started jogging with a couch to 5k programme after a very long hiatus from running. in my teens I used alcohol in a similar way to control my body, and any positives i got from exercising was obscured by that unhealthy end goal. for the last couple of years i’ve done no physical exercise, which was a really important step for me in stabilising my mental health: stopping my unhealthy behaviours and allowing me space to do exactly what i wanted in the moment and build intuitive eating habits was what i needed. now i’m in a stronger place mentally, i’m returning to exercise so i can move my body and connect more with myself outside of my head. there’s things over the past few years like boxing and weights that i’ve loved and have made me feel POWERFUL (which i think is a fantastic focus) and i can’t wait to resume those:) thanks for making this video xxx

  • For anyone who has a really hard time working out, know that on a traditional 9-5 schedule, it’s much harder to maintain an exercise regime. Your most productive,inspired hours are spent at work. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Take the time to contextualize working out within your day and mindset.

  • Why is our society plagued with so much deep, deep mental illness?  Too much time on your hands?  No self worth?  Yep!…that and more…all endorse, encouraged and promoted by all forms of media.  Part of the PC culture.

  • Me and my friends do climbing (outside) and it is so fun. But I found myself really hurting my self-esteem doing it because all my friends are so strong and active and they love sports and I don’t. So when I did a 5A (V2) and didn’t finish it when everyone else did it made me feel like shit. But I really like climbing, I love the outing and activity and I need to learn to not compare myself to others because they’ve been working out all their life. I also really love yoga, I feel like yoga, as well as dance, are two workouts that make me feel so good and so empowered after. <3

  • Great points! I hate running and the monotony of a gym routine but I recently started doing ballet 3 times a week and not only is it a great work out, it’s fun and really mentally stimulating. You have to be really focused so it’s a great way to get away from the stresses of daily life.

  • It’s weird, my friends consider me to be a healthy person because I don’t really eat junk food or fast food and I’m not over or under weight, but when I’m going up some stairs or usually 7 minutes in to working out, I can feel my heart pounding in my chest and I’m out of breath. I think having the stamina to workout for at least 30 minutes and to be able to run for the first in my life (I’ve always gotten cramps or out of breath) would make me feel powerful.:)

  • How I enjoy working out is that if I ever need a day to relax, I let myself have that one day. Otherwise, I do up to 30 min a day of whatever I feel like that day. I never force myself to do one thing if I feel like doing yoga, I will do that. If I’m more energized, I will go running or do a fitness wii game or your dance videos. I just make sure I never force myself to do something I don’t wanna do at that moment but I do force myself to do at least something.

  • This is really relatable! Thanks for posting this Arden. I’ve also found that when I go into the gym and cover up the distance/speed/caloric measure on the treadmill, it makes the exercise more about how I’m feeling in my body than me thinking “ugh, i need to turn the speed up I’m not going fast enough” or “I’m not burning enough calories, I need to do another 15 minutes.” And most times, I get a better/more effective work out in!

  • You really want to lose weight and keep it off. Stop eating out. Eat organic. Stop buying processed food. Stop drinking milk, yogart and butter. Buy grass fed and finished butter. Grass fed and finished beef. Buy organic veggies they are not sprayed with Monsanto Weed Killer. Organic fruit. But cold pressed extra virgin olive oil and extra virgin coconut oil. No other processed oils that clog arteries. Buy einkorn flour no processed flour. All my craving stopped no more depression no more breakouts. No more hard bowel movements. I never felt better in my life. I was not trying to lose weight but slowly started losing excess body fat as a by product of eating right now i do not miss eating out at all. And the food has so much flavor. Hamburger tasts like hamburger. Veg have flavor. Fruit is sweet. Stop buying food that is made to kill you off early. Diets do not work. This is a life style that works. No tying of stomach.
