The 1973 Mr. Olympia contest was an IFBB professional bodybuilding competition held on September 8, 1973, at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Brooklyn, New York. It was the 9th Mr. Olympia competition held.

The prize money for this event went down from previous years, from $1000, to only $750. Arnold gave a short speech and complained about this after he won the. 1973 Mr. Olympia Winner Arnold Schwarzenegger The 1973 Mr.

Olympia contest is easy to remember because after two years abroad, it was once again held in New York City. The American audience definitely needed to see who is the best bodybuilder at the time, and there wasn’t a better way to show that than the Mr. Olympia contest. • The generation of Ronnie Coleman and Phil Heath destroyed bodybuilding and turned into a ninja turtle transformation contest. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s era was probably the last of aesthetic and healthy sport. Now it’s disgusting and ugly looking muscular obesity with belly guts hanging out

  • I believe he was training under the tutelage of Vince G. during this time, so he of course was shredded! Im pretty sure he talked shit and called Arnie a fat phuck when they first met….

  • Thanks for your kind reply, I wish I had the full show but I don’t, The only person that can get all of this contest that were shown on ABC Wide Of Of Sports and CBS is Arnold but I just don’t know how to get in touch with him and ask him. I remember watching the full contest of the 1974 Mr Universe that ferrigno won in Verona Italy and of course the 1975 Mr Olympia and the 1977 Mr Universe and others. Somebody’s it’s got to have all of this footage somewhere in some place.

  • Arnold came shredded in 1973 because he didn’t win quite as easily in 1972 and the judges told him they wanted to see him leaner, so in 1973, that’s what he focused on. I actually think his 1974 body was most impressive though. He was slightly less conditioned, but he was freaking huge, and he was at his most impressive, imo.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Ultimate champion Bodybuilder and he was strong has fuck back then and he looked like a Greek God

  • As far as a combination of size AND conditioning I think this was Arnold’s best. The picture at the 2:02 mark is one of the best ever of him. Just the perfect angle and lighting. Oh and his physique may have something to do with that as well.

  • Just realized, you never see a guy with huge legs and a small waist. Golden era the guys had smaller legs, but these days guys have ridiculously huge legs, and a big gut to go w it, I just wonder if there’s a correlation.

  • In my opinion, this and 1974 were Arnold at his best. You can flip a coin as to which one was better. In 1974, he was more massive, here he is more striated and defined. People talk about his legs, but they were so cut up that they opened up like accordions when he flexed them.

  • A guy over 1.9 meter tall and having that perfect shape. Nowadays mr.olimps are all some pragnent dwarfs. Unfortunately after Arnie, pragnancy is a problem never leaving this sport till now.

  • At 1:59 Holy shit just look at that.. he looked massive..

And some say he doesn’t have legs.. blind or what? For the golden era he had the best legs.. look how much more muscle mass he gained from 1970 to 71

  • Hey Arnold at 2.53 “open them up, show them the whole thing” springs to mind. I joke, it must be a funny angle but the phrase spoken by the oak just popped into my head when I saw this shot.

  • IMO, this was Arnold’s best, you can flip a coin with 1974. He was so cut up ad striated this year. His quads were like accordions.

  • Everyone says 1974 was better, but I can’t see how it could be. He’s bigger, but here is absolutely complete. Ripped, large, every single body part flows flawlessly. This competition alone hosts several of Arnold’s most amazing posing shots.

  • 750$ price money for the biggest show in the world, adjusted for inflation thats about 4,000$ today. And you cant compete in other federations. Damn, bodybuilders were always screwed.

  • Never knew there were so few competitors.  THAT takes away from his ‘wins,’  Kinda spotty when there were fewer competitors in 4 wins than in a modern Olympia.  Not very impressive-Impressive physiques, but not ‘wins.’

  • Austrian oak, the legend, Arnie The terminator says, ” I ‘ll be back”, 56″ chest is Conan’s signature️, Nice post …

  • Anyone else noticed that the skin of these golden age bodybuilders was way smoother and aesthetic too? Even at high quality pictures and videos it´s a difference like day and night. The also never looked fucked up after retiring.

  • He was experimenting with Human Cadaver pituitary gland extracts that year, basically direct human growth hormone. However because of the link of pathogens and human corpses he abandoned such treatment.

  • Which one of these uncrowned Mr Olympia deserved it the most? http://theblogpanther.com/index.php/2018/03/26/bodybuilding-the-uncrowned-mr-olympias-in-history/

  • Arnold was only 22 here. Early in the film, you can see Franco Columbu backstage, talking to him. I remember watching this contest, and the legendary bodybuilders who were competing (Arnold, Sergio Oliva, Dave Draper, and Dennis Tinerino).

  • 2:48 is 1974 and not 1973. The 1974 footage is from off-season Mr. Southern Hemisphere in Australia. Not Mr. Olympia. Arnold is in off-season condition there.

  • 6’3 is the perfect height imo. I know theres a lot of hard work even if you take steroids but gotta be a little lucky in the gene department. I bet Arnold got mo ass than a toilet seat. But theres girls that dont like big muscles too.

  • GoldenEra 4ever I saw this picture in a magazine in 1973 when I was13 years old. It will be in my mind forever. He himself said that he was best in his 1974 version. Certainly the extra pounds were added in his chest and legs with almost the same degree of hardness and muscularity.I don’t think he really needed that. I still have not seen anything even close to his 1973 magnificent bodybuilding beauty.

  • Its a shame he would never return to that original 1971-74 245lb. condition which might have given Haney a fit in the 80s if he would of kept competing at that size up through the late 80s or so, which could have been possible.

  • Before watching the video
I hope it doesn’t contain Nick’s favorite and most repeated phrase about Arnold: “in 1980 Mr. Olympia which was the most controversial mr olympia of all time”

  • Better than Ronnie Coleman. In fact Arnold is THE BEST AND GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

He is a Greek hero. While Ronnie Coleman and other new bodybuilders look like bloated huge pile of shit with only size and size and size. No Greek sculpture.

  • Notice the briefs that Arnold wears. It accentuates his big hips and diminishes his taper. Later during his career, he rectified this problem by wearing a brief type of trunks which accentuated his legs rather than his waist.

  • Arnold HAD proportional legs, not those disgusting barrels for thighs that bodybuilders from today have… and are so proud off… I really was a different era, and people had a really different mentality.

  • Are there sharper pictures somewhere of this olympia? I know they used film back then and it probably was a little dark but still…

  • The difference between a juiced Arnold and the guy that came off the PED’s in between competitions is remarkable. Goes to show how potent the roids are. He actually didn’t look like a BB when the chemicals had left his body, he was left with a quite slim yet athletic physique when he came off the juice NO where close to the jacked and big muscular body he had when the syringes were filled with testosterone, decca and winstrol. People tend to forget that Arnie was a product of PED’s just like champs like Lance Armstrong. The latter guy was crucified for it. Arnold was glorified. Roids ain’t fair.

  • His abs ( and entire physique ) looked pretty damn good here.. I think this was a good mix between some of the best of ’74 and ’75..He certainly looks pretty tight and muscular all over… His definition is first rate here.. This is pretty close to that near perfect symmetry people remember him for.

  • This music (theme of Exodus) was made for Arnold. There is no one else who could pose to this music better than Arnold. Bodybuilder/journalist Ricky Wayne said 1973 and 1974 were the two years where no one on earth could have touched Arnold.

  • 73 and 74 Arnold Schwarzenegger is better than leaving and in my opinion especially when he does that most muscular pose in the double by set hand he is a great guy great Olympia but he lacks arms and legs separation

  • For me Arnold’s physique is best of all time. Nobody ever achieved such combination of mass, proportion and aesthetics. Being huge he still had NO GUT

  • I agree and have been saying the same thing for years. You can flip a coin between his best year, 1973 or 74. I would choose 73 since I think he looked really well conditioned. The pose at 1:30 is really neat, the cuts in the front thigh, the narrow waist, the V taper. The next year, he added some mass. But I think he lost some sharpness. I think this was his best.

  • Wow, this was definitely Arnold’s era, as these years around this time were his best. He had good mass and was shredded, especially by the standards of those days. Aesthetically speaking, bodybuilding was simply better then.

  • Its a shame he would never return to that original 1971-74 245lb. condition which might have given Haney a fit in the 80s if he would of kept competing at that size up through the late 80s or so, which could have been possible.

  • 100% agree with you. 73 was Arnold at his best. His most muscular is insane, even today. If Sergio was allowed to compete, he would have lost to Arnold for multiple reasons. Being Arnold was Joe’s golden boy plus his size and conditioning, he would not have lost to Sergio.

  • MR OLIMPIA del 73 y 80 se lo regalaron si lo comparan con lo otros competidores arnold esta lejos de ganar pero bueno lo tenia a WEIDER de su lado

  • I meant to say at the end that he retired before he hit muscle maturity in his mid-30s he retired at at 75 he was supposed to retire and 74 but you’re wanted to do the documentary Pumping Iron so he had to lose weight for a movie and then put on weight and 75 he was only 232 and 74 he was a silent 2:40 I believe

  • What is that, organ music? Good ol’ 1970 ‘s body building. Can you imagine them playing organ music at a Mr. Olympia in 2017. haha No, you can’t.

  • You could toss a coin on I 1973 74 to which is a better Olympia in my opinion I like 74 but his most condition they said was in 73 but 74 he was a solid 240 lb for the prejudge and then he came in a couple pounds heavier for the actual night that’s what I heard

  • His 74 might have been the best Mr olympia body ever to be on stage and that’s why he is the goat or the greatest whatever you want to call Arnold it’s up to you

  • I don’t know so much, the shots I’ve seen of Arnold in 1973 he seemed bigger maybe they were pre contest before he tapered to get cut. Maybe you could do a comparison of Arnold with himself from both years, that would help us decide Nick.

  • If I were a judge at the 2018 Olympia and Arnold was suddenly whisked on stage by a time machine that pulled him directly off the stage in 1974 I would give him the win. Why? Because Arnold still had plenty of muscle but is much more pleasing AESTHETICALLY than today’s drug monsters and that’s what bodybuilding is all about.

  • They must have modeled the “Sandow” statue trophy from Arnold cause it looks so much like him and also making him the ultimate and classic bodybuilder of all…!!!

  • A cada video seu que assisto grande giga, fico mais e mais emocionado e instigado com o grande profissional e ser humano que vc é!!!!

  • His conditioning was also excellent here even though he was bigger. And his quads looked fabulous, he always had the calves. Probably his best physique ever. I agree.

  • 1963 and forward to today this era of bodybuilders claim steroids. Only improve these physique 10% but when looking at bodybuilders from 1940 to 1960 there a major difference in physique.steroids made bodybuilders what it is today about putting on muscle not health..more powerful drugs bigger physique until they almost explode on stage through their bubblegut and the females look like they suffer from acromegaly. but that sell tickets it like a modern day circus.

  • 1973 Arnold reached a zenith of complete development in every body part and nailed the total package. What a place in history is this Mr. Olympia contest.

  • Really the greatest physique all time.youngest mr. Universe.19
Fuckin yrs old.! Sergio was great.but he could not beat arnold.
    Arnold had a special physique.
Ali malla told me that at venice beach.ali malla great bodybuilder..
    Its over.arnold the best.could hit all poses.dorian or coleman couldnt.or nobody else.blacks
    Have. Lousy insertions.

  • 3:46 This viewpoint always drops my jaw. That wide back, small waist and giant arm…overpowering perfection of the classical ideals.

  • 73 was Arnold’s best condition and he was ripped to the Bone 74 was his biggest year at 27 years old he never hit muscle maturity to in his thirties you imagine that he would have had about 15 Mr Olympia

  • I think 75 was the best condition and muscle density, 74 the largest size, 73 the best definition. From 69 to 71 he had size and was already a great poser, with incredible stage presence, resourcefulness, flippancy, a strong sense of competitiveness and much charisma, but he still did not have the best muscle quality. The Arnold’s abilities were never restricted to physical form only. He was a very intelligent, sagacious and witty person. Anyway, Arnold finished his briliant career without presenting his best shape in a same show alone.

  • I was there in Columbus in 1970. Saw Alexeev clean and jerk 501. Sergio was as smooth as a babys azz. I didn’t remember Arnold’s thighs being so skinny though…first met him in Chicago at Depaul U in 1969(yeah I’m OLD) This is my kids utube avatar….

  • The more pics I see of Nubret, the more impressed I am with him. In some pics i have seen, he is more muscular for his height and better conditioned than Arnold, and yet he is glossed over in a historic sense. That’s to bad. He was better than Ferrigno, and light years ahead of Columbo, and yet he is rarely mentioned.

  • If u havnt made a video of pictures of bodybuilders from their very best year and then compare them, prob some guys most people never even heard of will compete in that type of face off. Theres def some random builders who out of no where had an insane physiqe for a random competition even if it was short lived.

  • Arnold is my favorite and 1974 is my favorite he ever looked… however in 1980 he did have way smaller legs and didn’t look as good he shouldn’t have won that year

  • When Lou gets dwarfed you know Arnold was huge! Arnold’s chest and arms are simply the best ever and I agree Nick Arnold’s best legs ever. If he could have combined 73’s conditioning and 74’s mass he would have been scary great. Phil has no room to criticize Arnold, during Arnold’s time he simply was the best and Phil will never achieve what Arnold has achieved.

  • Arnold was big but he was conditioned and aesthetic at the same time. Many bodybuilders today are big but lack the aesthetic appeal and aren’t able to control their abdominals either. Arnold was the perfect balance.

  • Arnold was a absolute monster in 1970s.I don’t understand why people always suspect on his size and make him small. He is a huge guy.

  • Not to take anything away from Arnold, but I think the reason he was most shredded on stage in 73 was partly because he was inspired by the movie Enter The Dragon (released in 73), in which Bruce Lee demonstrated his most shredded physique ever, possibly by far the most shredded physique of any human being during that period in time. Considering the movie was hugely popular when it came out (and became a classic since then), perhaps bringing that level of conditioning on stage would get on the better side of the judges and public viewers.

  • I think he was more shredded 1975. Arnold had better muscle maturity, separation, vascularity, and looked more polished overall in 75. His pecs looked insane in 73 though, I’ll give you that much.

  • I had a buddy who’s family was from Finland and they immigrated to the US back in the 60’s. He looked like Dave Draper but was built exactly like Arnold. Same bone structure, height, walk, and muscular makeup. He even sounded like Arnold. If he would have had the same drive as Arnold to be a bodybuilder they could have been twins, but he was only interested in staying in shape.

  • 1’59.The pose that shows the best bodybuilder to ever appear on earth. Not the biggest, not the hardest, not the strongest.Simply the best.

  • Such a pity Nick that Arnols was not with this shape in de movie Pumping Iron in which he looked pretty smaal comparising 1975 with 1974, yes I know it was because of the movies but Pumping Iron came a year too late………………

  • I saw a re-run of this when I was 16 in 1973. I had some ads and pics of him with “muscles in 6 weeks” if you buy this course…and thought the pics were fake, but once I saw him on TV…it changed my life and I took up bobybuilding. He was 23 here, and Mr. Olympia two weeks later in New York. Would like to see the full clip if you have it…Arnold, Dave Draper, Sergio Oliva. This was history.

  • LOL this is definitely the 60’s going into the 70’s music transition. The music is so bizarre it’s like bodybuilding & “Al Albert’s showcase” had a baby.

  • @ 3:08 ’73 was a financially troublesome year for Weider and the IFBB. It was unfortunate for the competitors that the Olympia was held in September, the very month Joe was late on his car note.

  • Arnold looked his best in 74 i agree, imagine if he didnt do stay hungry and didnt have to drop all that muscle to make it to 210 pounds,he woulda looked even freakier in 75. i believe Arnolds body peaked out in 74 and would peaked out in 75 also if Arnold didnt lose ALL THAT MUSCLE for the movie stay hungry,40 pounds of muscle is hard to lose and even harder to put it back on by the time the 75 olympia came around

  • If it wasn’t for Arnold we would not be making YouTube videos on bodybuilding…. The rest of the atheletes are joke and no inspiration,,, or wrong inspirations like rich piaana,, whatever he’s name was

  • SMALL Legs.. pleeease. Arnold’s legs were in the sense of the word beautiful, a chiseled work of art. It’s been never said size was the framework for Arnold it has always been about his physique, an almost perfect symmetry. Anatomy at its best in the entertainment arena. Thank you Arny for the memories you will leave us with!

  • If he could have combined 73 & 74 and had all those elements come together it would have been insane for that time period. He was already insane for the times, just imagine what that big and ripped look would have looked like.

  • Arnold deserved this win against Sergio, but several things to consider.1.Arnold was in top shape as he had competed in the Universe in London 1-2 days before, Sergio who had been ill for 2-3 weeks at this point was two weeks from the mr O title and visibly smaller than usual at 220 lb.He also didnt intend on competing at this contest but was lured by the promoter Lurie. And he also didnt expect arnold competing either, arnold was surprise entrant. So yes arnold was better but because sergio was Ill, two weeks from out and didnt expect him( therefore didnt came at 100 %, in fact he didnt even want to compete here in the first place).
1972 however, well arnolds words after Sergio was stupendous in Essen”.Need we say more>?GIFT

  • Arnold had good frontal thighs and great calves. He lacked Hamstrings. He would find a way to win even today. He was 6’2. Add 50 ripped pounds to what you see here and Voila he wins!

  • Can’t disagree with that Nick, when I think of body building it’s these old photos of Arnold that I envision. Back then the governator grabbed the planet as if it were a snow globe and he shook it up. I’m glad he did too!………………….PEACE!!

  • Arnold could have won 7 more times easily beating Zane franco Dickerson and samir.but more money was to be make in Hollywood and moving on to more money as a promoter of bodybuilding a sport he made popular he used BB he didn’t let Joe weider totally use him
The other. BB didn’t think big like Arnold that’s why some of them got used ended up homeless die young.abuse drugs.roidrage crimes

  • Arnold definitely looked great in ’73. The biggest surprise (to me) is that he was able to get his quads looking that good in time for the Olympia. They might not have been BIG, but considering the fact that he had a leg/knee injury in late 1972 (and his quads were VERY small at the beginning of 1973) he really accomplished something amazing.

  • I’m more of a powerlifting guy but man, I can’t stop watching your videos on old school B.B. so straight to the point and well made, really helps me brush up on my strength sports history knowledge. I and I’m sure many others appreciate your efforts man!

  • If he was only 245-250 here Imagine Arnold at 260-280! I mean for his height he was straight up slim here by today’s standards and he looks so awesome and shape/balance wise to me no one ever beat him. For him to be as Massive as Coleman he would have to be about 310-320 but I feel because of his aesthetic advantage he would whoop everyone today at only about 260, a bit more on the back and legs and he’d be king even today, with his youth intact of course

  • It was the great vincegironda that got arnold in that awesome condition whe they first met vince call Arnold a fat fuck then he put arnold on steak and eggs and heavy cream and milk and egg protein powder and liver tablets

  • He inspired me to train. I think this was his best year, and agree that nowadays bodybuilders don’t have the aesthetics. I’d peg him here as being 5’11 1/2″ @ 245lbs.
