1972 Mr Olympia Review: Sergio Oliva vs Arnold Schwarzenegger

Video taken from the channel: Marx Max Muscle

• Arnold Schwarzenegger won his third consecutive Mr. Olympia title, tying the previous record held by Sergio Oliva• The winner was decided by seven judges, four voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger and three voted for Sergio Oliva. Arnold Schwarzenegger got the 1972 Mr. Olympia title, and stirred a lot of discussion. This was mostly because of the fact that both Oliva and Schwarzenegger had impressive performance on stage and that it is hard to choose a winner between two bodybuilders on that level.

The film Pumping Iron (1977) featured the buildup to the 1975 Mr. Olympia in Pretoria South Africa and helped launch the acting careers of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. There is also a female bodybuilder crowned, Ms. Olympia, as well as winners of Fitness Olympia and Figure Olympia for fitness and figure competitors.

  • Give me a break…arnold was better.. better lower back…better calves…seperation in quads..more ripped…if sergio was in arnolds condition..he would be smaller…

  • That’s y Arnold won because Sergio was so much better duh so the guy in last place in a Nascar race should be called the winner shoot I ain’t even know that shoot

  • Arnold was offered 3 of the 7 sandows that he had won, undoubtedly. It was decided that he would be the face of the discipline regardless of whatever realistic and objective criteria one would have relied upon at the time to designate the winner on stage…It sucks, but politics has always been part of the game. It is what it is…

  • That’s arguable Mentzer’s chest wasn’t as proportional. On is horribly undersized..he has more rows of of abdominal muscles. That’s it.

  • The one and only Frank Zane who was in that 1972 Olympia answer that question 37:00 minutes into this Interview. That’s it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEhFppuzVFk&t=2344s

  • Sergio was always to soft with poor conditioning. Arms were blocky with no seperation. In fact his whole upper body was blocky. He lacked definition and zero polish on his physique. I always felt like he relied on his great genetics to much.

  • Arnold was better conditioned, better detail, better separation. Sergio had good upper legs, but absolutely no calfs. Come on Arnold’s back was better more detailed. His arms were so much better, detail, separation. Sergio had no abs, like none. I always felt sergio was never in great condition. It’s sad because I feel like his genetics were off the charts. I just feel like even in 72 Arnold had more quality muscle with more conditioning and separation. It’s close but I’d sergio was just better conditioned I think he would have won

  • Even Frank Zane who was there claims Sergio was better that day. I saw Oliva from 73 to 76 and he was huge but about 2 weeks out. These were the Dan Lurie WBBG shows. I also saw Arnold in Brooklyn at the 73 Olympia and. At the 74 Olympia held at MSG. Arnold was the better of the two had they competed those two years.

  • Arnold was a great bodybuilder, but looks bad when he is not at his biggest form. He needed more mass to create the illusion of a small waist. He had long legs, with good separation but his quads look tiny. Overall his forearms, his shoulders, his tríceps are underdeveloped, he looked unfinished. He was great, but needed more mass in the right places to look as food as in 1974. But even that year, his quads look a little bit small compared to the rest of his body. Anyway he was amazing, but Sergio won that year for sue. The face expressions in the photographs transmits that Arnold is quite hesitant, which is not typical from him.

  • But Arnold is 10 cm taller than Sergio, he cannot possibly have an equally narrow waist. It would look asymmetrical.

In the first photo, who is the best?

Serge Nubret! Compared to him, Oliva also looks like a normal middle weight. And does Frank Zane have the same weight here as Oliva the mass monster?

    It almost looks like this..

  • You could argue (obviously) became better than this version is Sergio in say 1974 but in this year these 2 guys it’s not overly close Sergio is the better bodybuilder.

  • Honestly not sure how people don’t see Arnold as the clear winner here. Bigger and more conditioned. Everyone likes to talk about how small Sergio’s waist was but no one seems to be mentioning how big Arnold’s torso was. He’s a lot wider. Also, not sure where this notion that Sergio had bigger legs than Arnold this year? Look at 4:06. Arnold’s legs are just straight up bigger. And pretty much every other shot supports that his legs were at least as big as Sergio’s. And they had better separation! Arms are a bit closer, I can see you giving the nod to Sergio for the forarms and to a lesser extend the triceps. But Arnold still had those massive biceps and much better separation. That one great shot of Sergio at 5:05 is at a really favourable angle for him, much more so than the shot of Arnold. I don’t think this is a blowout by any means, Sergio was competitive. But Arnold is winning.

  • Arnold better arm seperation and definition. Sergio big arms but lack definition.
    Arnold chest wins all day.
Arnold better mid section and vacuum
Sergio bigger legs, arnold better seperation.
Both good back pose, sergio defininition lacking again.

Arnold win by at least 3

  • That pic of Sergio at 5:00!! Holy freakin’ cow!! His fullness, thickness and proportions and sharpness is amazing.
Sergio’s back at 8:40 is amazing, but his back double biceps at 8:50 is strangely flat!! His victory pose at 10:45 is truly iconic!!
The pic at 4:10 shows Arnie is slightly more polished and defined overall, but this is a line ball decision!!
Either way is OK with me……………..

  • Arnold was overrated I think, ya you guys can speak all kinds of shit, but if Joe weider wasn’t his side Arnold sure wasn’t winning those Olympias until Sergio retires

  • Great Video & your Arnold imitation is on point! I agree with your assessment. Although it is a vote against Arnold; it also shows how good Arnold was at his very peak as I don’t think a 1972 Sergio (at his best) would beat Arnold at his best 1973-74 & maybe 71.

  • Googled it Mike mentzer is 5’8 but still look in best physique.. wondering Arnold Schwarzenegger.. Heights.. Must be around??.

  • Had the contest been held in Havana instead of Essen and without Weider, I would bet that the overall winner would’ve been quite different.

  • I like this guy he tells the truth good for you man shame the devil let the world know about the real distinction between the Myth and the Oak I don’t think back then nobody could touch the Myth

  • In all honesty Sergio had better condition along with Serg nubert he unfortunately never got the recognized he so rightfully deserved due to biased on Arnold part imo ‍♂️

  • The waist size really doesn’t matter imo. Sergios waist looked fake. Idk I’d go with Arnold. Wide waists sometimes look more powerful

  • It seems like your a big sergio fan, which is fine. I appreciate you doing the video so everyone can make their own decision. For me it’s arnold all day and it’s really not even close. When judging an ifbb contest conditioning is paramount in every round. Flex wheeler with his superior shape could never beat Yates because of conditioning. Arnold is just far more defined and dyer from head to toe. Arnold presents a complete package and displays a level of conditioning sergio was never able to bring to stage

  • Best shape of oliva vs just ok shape of arnold, the myth may/should have won.
That pose at 10:00 with the arms in the air, damn, he looks so powerfull. No one did it better, not lee priest nor paul dillet.

  • Sergio had bigger arms, much bigger legs, and a smaller waist. Arnold knew how to get in Peak shape and how to pose in competition. Arnold also had the advantage of being more marketable. Call that however you want.

  • Damn I think your right looking at those comparisons I dont think Sergio was better than Arnold at his best year but definitely in 72. Can you imagine if Sergio had Arnold’s biceps

  • Its a shame he would never return to that original 1971-74 245lb. condition which might have given Haney a fit in the 80s if he would of kept competing at that size up through the late 80s or so, which could have been possible.

  • The Iron Grid we feel the same way Arnold#1,Lee#2,Dorian#3,Ronnie#4.
The sport would not be what it is today, not to mention the phenomenal movies and bodybuilding competitions.,my middle name is Arnold.

  • Sergio in 1972 all the way but in 1973 and 1974 Arnols was unbeatable even for Sergio if he was allowed to compete in 1973 and 1974 which was not the case but 1972 was Sergio but politics let Arnie win

  • Damn, that was some rare footage, never seen it before.
While I respect your opinion that Arnold is the GOAT, I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree with you there and say that Coleman beats him by the ever so slightest of margins. Keep up the quality content btw man.

  • Arnold’s worst years were 1972 and 1980. In 1972, I could see Sergio in his best shape beating an off Arnold. In 1970 and 1975, he was good enough to win against the competition he had, but not anywhere near his best shape.

In 1971, 1973 and 1974, he was simply untouchable. As a historian who watched Arnold in 1974 said, even if King Kong showed up on stage, he would not have been able to beat Arnold. 248 lbs of lean muscle mass and conditioning according to Arnold himself. Arnold really started peaking in 1973 and hit his ultimate in 1974. Then he decided to retire at the age of 27 in 1974, but he could have continued to get better and would have been even better in 1975, if he had not stopped training and lost 50 lbs of lean muscle for “Stay Hungry”.

  • Joe Weider robbed two deserving winners from Mr. Olympia. Sergio Olivia and Mike Mentzer were the worthy winners of 72 and 80 Mr. Olympia. I am not against Arnold but Weider promoted him so much.

  • I was there at the 1980 Olympia and I saw that Arnold had some stiff competition on that day and I can say from my perspective that I still have reservations on who should have won. I know that you, Nick has said that Chris Dickerson was the least impressive Olympia winner, but I can tell you that on that day he impressed the most as his muscle development, balance and conditioning was the best on stage and he came in second. It`s funny that no one speaks about Dickerson at that 1980 Olympia as for my part he deserved his placing above the rest and it would not be out of place if he won that day.

  • I understand why it’s controversial but damn tho for some reason, when Arnold is on stage he makes you forget what you saw previous to him. That’s just me tho, Arnold looks so pleasing to the eye. He was charismatic with a great personality, an actor He was handsome guy too, he just looks like he should be called “mr.olympia” Arnold won cause he was just loved in so many categories lol

  • One of the judges said in 79 that Mentzer had too much muscle that is why they favored Zane. Back then I realized I could learn from this Mentzer guy.

  • Just in this pictures you can see that Arnold at his worst shape still was superior to every of all these competitors. His physique still beat every one.

  • The Olympia/IFBB is rigged of course. It was started by Jewish venture capitalists Youeseph and Benjamin Weider who wanted to profit from hedonism and drug abuse

  • I believe Mike had the most balanced look of anyone,I attended a Mike Mentzer and Boyer Coe clinic in oklahoma city back in 81′ at a hotel,I talked with both men, very down to earth guys. Mike and his brother Ray both had what most BB’s never had,all american good looks, real men handsome. That being said,NOBODY had Arnold’s physique and still don’t,his mold was broke and there will never be another. But the 1980 Oly should have been Mike’s hands down,he was robbed……

  • Mike’s HIT saved my plateau. Not saying Heavy Duty training is the absolute truth but it doesn’t get the attention and credit it deserves.

  • Not saying mentzer wasn’t a great body builder, but if you put them side by side you can tell Arnold was best overall. Mike had the best midsection and back but like I said Arnold was best overall. Mike definitely should have won that year if Arnold hadn’t competed.

  • I can’t find a real winner in this Olympia,Coe perhaps. But who cares!Best Phtsique in the world was the Wabba contender Bertil Fox!

  • I don’t know. Judging from the photos, I have Arnold beating Mentzer in the 1980 Olympia. Arnold looks more aesthetic, ripped, bigger, and more separated than Mentzer. Mentzer almost has a gut in the 1980 Olympia, compared to Arnold. Mentzer strikes me as a sore loser.

  • Arnold abs are the best.. and biceps… its hard to argue.. plus without Arnold… Weightlifting would be even worse off.. Mike should thank Arnold and stop the hate.

  • As someone who isnt super knowledgable or into bodybuilding as a sport, i dont know how you even really judge this shit they all look ripped so i dont know what the fuck this guys talking about. Complaining like a bitch arnie is the goat dont you ever hate on the terminator. Its not like a sport where you can foul and score points with refs. Its judging its whatever they like the most at the time i guess

  • Mike was the biggest fuckin pussy, he quit bodybuilding after that Olympia and became an alcoholic because Arnold won and kept on bitching about his win.

  • I think Arnold had a better shape. He was wider, thicker and fuller. But he didn’t have as many cuts as before. So that’s probably why it seemed like he shouldn’t have won.

  • Competition in any sport is as MENTAL as it is PHYSICAL. Arnold understood that. I think Arnold got into Mike’s head and threw him off his game. The competition is not just about bringing your best physique but also SELLING IT and Arnold is a great salesman. The contest may have been rigged but Arnold may have just psyched out Mike and the judges by skillfully hiding his flaws in the pose down.

  • Mike sounds like those sore losers could have should have would have… Arnold shows why he is dominant in life beyond BB and Mike and the rest of them never accomplished wat Arnold did or has done

  • Looking at the two in the same pose at 5:42, Arnolds upper body is bigger like the Trapezius and Chest. Whereas Mikes lower body is better like the Abs and Thigh. Mikes Abs are a complete six pack. But Arnolds is not, its very obvious. So its close yes Mike should have got it for overall body. All his muscles were well developed.

  • We will never have physique like them in recent competitions their physique look really cool, now a days when you see mr olympia it feels vomiting from inside

  • OMG Boyer Coe. I liked him in the Lou Ferrigno documentary Stand Tall. It was offered as an extra on The Incredible Hulk Returns/Trial of The Incredible Hulk DVD.

  • There was crouption Arnold was supported by joe weider. He help arnold that time bcz he like Arnold body and he bring Arnold to body building competition

  • Arnold was given that Mr Olympia Mike mentzer look much better. Arnold also lost to Sergio Oliva the myth he was given that mr. Olympia to just like in boxing how they give the boxing matches to Floyd Mayweather he got his ass kicked by Marcos Maidana and also by Oscar De La Hoya it is all rigged

  • The advertisement..A plant burger. That burger is made from dog food and full of salt. it is complete fucking garbage and a horrible thing to eat.

  • I think what made arnold still won the contest is because of his unique physique. He is entirely different from the others. Even for today’s bodybuilding, I still think he is the best of the best.

  • Arnold was not at his best, yes. But he was more detailed in his legs and calves, had better bicep peaks, his lats were lower and he was the far better poser. Sergio could hide behind ARNOLD but ARNOLD could not hide behind Sergio. Sergio did have a smaller waist, but ARNOLD was way taller. Arnold deserved the win.

  • Wieder and Der Arnold were/are part of the globalist cabal. Follow DerArnold’s career and you’ll understand why he was put in the spotlight continually.

  • Mentzer’s physique was superior to Arnold’s. Same thing happened between Grimeck and the great Steve Reeves in the late forties.

  • Arnold is biger better belly damn look his stomach si flat no big belly. Arnold win because he has the size bigger ghan mike he is just so frustrated and got his big head because of the perfect score before arnold

  • There is no denying that Mike Mentzer had a great physique, but that doesn’t mean Arnold’s body was not deserving. They both have great physique.

  • depends on what you like very subjective. If conditioning is your thing Arnold is the guy. If proportion is your thing Sergio is the guy. Just a thing that people look like this in the seventies oh wow

  • Y todavia los you tubers seguirán diciendo que era mejor Oliva que Schwarzenegger??
Lejos, muy lejos Arnold superior a Oliva, mejor definicion, mejor posador, mas elegancia, mejor presencia, mejor TODO!!!

  • I love Arnold as well, everything you said is how I have felt since time immemorial but I disagree in Arny and any other class than the open, to say Arny could win the classic class would mean that Mr. S. would have to consider dropping weight, fitting into someone else’s strictures of how he should display his physique art and that would just be insulting. I cringed and almost died when Nick who was asking Arnold questions after the Ohio if Arnold today would be competing in the open or classic physique, that just shows how zero intuition, how lil’ he knows about Arnold, the classic eras, the sport of bb, everything, by asking that stupid question he spit on everything everyone loves about bb, total rook! I hope I never see him talking to a legend again, waht a sickening disgrace…

  • 1972 Arnold vs. Sergio doesn’t really matter which one was better than the other. Only one of the two was an “official” competitor in that contest.

  • Sergio looks incredibly massive here. Arnold later said that he missed his peak for this contest. To me its a tossup, Oliva’s most muscular and front lat spread are awesome.

  • Arnold is simply bigger. He was off from this previous and following years condition but that just brought him close to Sergio who might have only been in great competition condition once in his whole career. Sergio is smaller, has awful abs and overpowering shoulders. It’s super close. Like it was in 1980 when Arnold at 75% eeked it out versus smaller competitors, Arnold wins by a smidge. The lighting was terrible this year which really hurt Arnold

  • No matter what Arnold had a Wide waist and Sergio had a small narrow waist along with longer, fuller muscle bellys…both are genetic gifts which Sergio was born with.

  • I met both men. Arnold had not a bad thing to say about any other bodybuilder when I spoke to him in 1982. On the other hand, Sergio trashed fellow competitors. That was around 1983-84. I couldn’t understand why.

  • Sergio was more massive than Arnold

Arnold had the better overall package and deserved to win

Bodybuilding should be about the best package and presentation and that is what Arnold brought to the stage

  • Both amazing athletes but I prefer Arnold, as did many. Don’t get me wrong Sergio is awesome!! I would rather look like Arnold ultimately

  • Sergio looked like he was 4 weeks out of shape, holding water and smooth. His posing was jerky and awkward, and his lats, though wide were high and his back was overall shallow and lacked muscularity. Arnold had just surpassed him and thats all it is. Sergio was too hotheaded and prideful to make the necessary changes to continue to be competitive with Arnold, who was cool and calculating and was willing to do whatever it took.

  • arnold was clearly better then sergio here70 was debatable but not here. arnold was like 7 years younger then sergio = arnold was getting better and better and by 73 74 74 sergio had no chance.
