  • brought to you by the TEA industry but what chemicals are they using to grow tea now? y9ou are the knowledgeable people tell us?

  • Coffee is a nervous stimulant and Ayurveda recommends not to drink it as increase the heat in body it is only best if you drink when u have fever or runny nose as a medicine that too in little quantity.

  • A standard Energy drink!? Is there a universal standard for this that I haven’t heard of? Are you sure you are not measuring the bodies response to a mass of sugar, or fancy sugar replacements? Why not use a known quantity of caffieine in pill form, or just coffee with no sugar or milk. Thumbs down for making people think that science is about before and after measurements of complex systems given complex concoctions with expensive machinery. Oh, wait, it was related to some dodgy news story, right, so this is a click bait video.

  • Caffeine has made me very anxious. Caffeine has given me anxiety and it has given me this jittery feeling. It also makes me overthink certain situations and that is why is has made me very nervous/awkward. I’m glad I stopped consuming caffeine and when I stopped, I feel more like myself. Caffeine is just too much for me. My caffeine free lifestyle has made me more calm/relaxed.

  • Coffee in moderation only. I would drink up to 7 mugs a day because a high stress job made me lose sleep, this lead to less sleep, which lead to drinking beer and eating more, which lead to weight gain, which lead to being inactive. I gained 50 lbs in 5 years. This is not only because of coffee but it was a key factor for me. I quit it 2 months ago, and did a juicing diet then keto with more excercise, lost 70 lbs and ran my first 10 km in 6 years last week! Everything is better now. I reset my caffeine tolerance, having my first cup in 2 months now, i feel like im going to run 10 miler and feeling unfocused…will NOT make coffee a regular thing.

  • why did you use an energy drink as opposed to simple caffeine? now you can’t distinguish between the effects of the sugar vs. the caffeine.

  • They should have shown her drinkning plain water first, to prove that the increased heart rate wasn’t related to the actual drinking and attention from the nurse.

  • I gave up coffee and the following 3 days were like hell for me emotionally and mentally.
I started crying for no reason then at times got very angry and irritable.
It took me 3 and a half days to go back to my normal state of being.
I drank a lot of water in the meantime to flush out all the caffeine out of my system.
Also lime juice helped me to stay hydrated and calm.
My advice would be if you want to get rid of your caffeine addiction and want to try it don’t go cold turkey at one go.
Start by reducing the number of cups you drink per day.
Lets say if you drink 10 cups/day reduce it by 2cups and drink 8 the next day and stick to your plan.
You would need to dedicate around 3-4 days to completely decaffeinate yourself.
And believe me,its totally worth your time and effort, especially for your mental health and pocket!

  • I really like this channel because it help me learn the benefits of the coffee, like you said intake of coffee may lower risk of premature death from certain illnesses. It’s amazing and thank you so much.

  • I average 6 cups a day… this video explains why i always wanna murder everybody if the law would allow me…. Imma go 2 cups starting tomorrow….

  • I used to drink as much as 15 cups of coffee on certain days, strangely I never had problems falling asleep, yeah I didn’t feel tired but if I went to bed at 10 even after so much coffee I would fall asleep in minutes. I never experienced any side affects of too much coffee and till today I drink a lot of it, and I mean, a lot.

  • for a daily coffee drinker, time passes fast and linear for those who don’t they can enjoy a long day personally I go for a single cup of coffee which has 200mg jolt only in the morning after that nothing whole day

  • My parents barely let me have coffee and when in do im bouncing off the walls and i shake like crazy while heart is going faster than lightning mcqueen

  • You forgot to mention the digestive, sinus, lung, circulation, snd skin benefits. Clearly you are biased in your efforts to research this topic; therefore I am truly disappointed in your findings, Sir. TRULY DISAPPOINTED! Good day!

  • Oh yeah I think sometimes when you drink a lot and a lot and a lot of Kathy and then you can go super sane and go through time and space and you would be like super sonic and dark sonic and hyper sonic

  • What worthless non-information! I suppose BBC didn’t want to offend anyone with any actual information.
I see, offered in the sidebar on my computer screen, videos addressing other things I’ve been wondering about, including the safety of teeth-whitening. However, I will NOT be clicking on any more BBC Earth Lab videos, since this is the second one I’ve viewed, which seems deliberately designed to not really say anything.

  • I’ve been searching for this for HOURS. I made a bad decision of purchasing one of my favorite coffee brand new Black coffee with an extra double shot. I’m a person known to have anxiety attacks/panic attack after consistent consumption of caffeine (specifically black coffee) for more than two days. Immediately after my first sip, the symptoms came. I couldn’t stop laughing and being more upbeat than I’ve ever been (the only similar situation i’ve experienced, not even half the amount of, uncontrollable laughter was after a 360 degree pirate ship ride and the laughing only lasts 3 hours max). The symptoms persisted for two hours and got worse, I began laughing more and dizziness spells began. The laughter calmed once more and the dizziness spell stopped for a few minutes after an hour until I got home. I started laughing, crying, shaking, making facial expression, making odd sounds for two hours with the dizziness and headache as my first and only warning before the ‘episode’. I was kept to the floor, barely even able to sit upright for HOURS until I finally could get myself out of my room to take a shower. Right before I shower, I had a moment of dissociation. After that, all is currently well. As much as i’d like to say i’m never touching caffeine again, I know that this will reoccur one day like all the times before. I have no idea what happened today but this is the closest explanation i’ve found.

  • I’ve started drinking unsweetened and unflavored iced tea moreso to wean myself off of drinking soda, which I admittedly used to drink way too much of. It used to be so bad that I’d drink at least 2-3 20oz servings of soda a day, but I’ve gotten it under control and now I’d say it’s closer to maybe 2-3 a week at most. I’ve chalked up my recent health changes (namely reduced acne and slight weight loss) more to the fact that I’m not drinking nearly as much sugar/calorie laden soda and not because I’m drinking tea. However, those health benefits that you mention don’t seem like anything to complain about, so I suppose I’ll keep on with my newfound tea drinking ways.

  • Have the mayo clinic really sold out to coffee companies? This advice is total nonsense.
Coffee is an addictive stimulant that increases adrenaline and noradrenaline in the body. Adrenaline and noradrenaline suppress the immune system and cause insomnia and gut irritability. They also cause the body to raise blood sugar causing more insulin to be released (increasing the likelihood of Type 2 diabetes obesity and cardiovascular disease.
Caffeine withdrawal comes with symptoms to that are similar to (but less severe than) its molecular ancestor cocain irritability, headaches, malaise, paranoia…..

  • How can we study ‘tea’? ‘Tea’ can literally be dirt in a bag. What kind are they studying? Nobody says. As it is, there is literally 200 options in my Publix.

  • its good to stay realistic and demystify some assumptions about tea and health benefits. I am still a japanese green tea drinker and like the taste and the effect. Thanks for the informative video!

  • Off topic but how can I turn subtitles completely off? I take them off every time but they’re automaticly on in next video I watch.

  • I think I need to clarify something. The kidneys do not PRODUCE aquaporins when stimulated by the antidiuretic hormone(ADH), the ADH actually triggers the BINDING of aquaporins to the walls of the collecting duct in the kidneys, and these aquaporins can actually be removed from the cell walls for more diluted urine.

  • I`ve been following bad breath remedy and my bad breath has totally disappeared. I now have so much more confidence because I could speak to people one on one without having to worry as to what form of odour is coming out of my mouth! Guide name is Kαyden codomab, I found it on Google.

  • Something that annoys me, and I don’t know if it should: people that get super defensive about drinking coffee or tea, when evidence is brought forward about one being better than the other.
Listen, coffee is fine, as is tea (which is said to be better, not just in this video). Really, in my mind, it’s just about which one gives you the better “buzz” affect, and provides you with the longer lasting, beneficial energy we all drink it for (excluding caffeine-free beverages from this discussion). I find that if I have coffee in the morning, and then follow that with two cups of tea (one black, one green) my mind is in peak-thinking condition (coffee alone gives me a scatter brain. Tea alone makes me feel lethargic). If you feel fine drinking just coffee, great! However, if you feel like tea benefits you more or drinking them together does, then maybe start testing it from day to day. I ran tests on myself, and now I know (approximately) what combination helps me stay in tip top shape.
I am also very physically active, so making sure I never drink caffeine too close to bed time (which does horrendous things to your sleep). I also wake up at 5 every day. Knowing what I know about my “perfect” caffeine balance, really allows me to make it from day to day feeling happy and relaxed.
Edit: having less variables in your tests also makes them easier (I.e., consistent sleep schedule, same workout regiment, same job). I found that whenever I’d get inconsistent sleep, I’d be feeling tired and, empirically, thinking that it was directly related to my caffeine and food choices.

  • Black tea does make you loose weight and be less bloated, I did the one meal a day diet and drank this tea and got skinnier in a week.

  • To whom it may concern,

Have you guys done any research with what is refereed to Cuban coffee which has a way stronger punch of caffeine?

  • Caffeine gives people a buzz?! I don’t feel anything from coffee or energy drinks. Why did god not give me enough adenosine receptors?! I’m pissed at my Nero chemistry..

  • Coffee is good if you are going to do something or play games however if you took it and just sit there you might get some serious anxiety specially if you’re someone who have social issues like me lol i tend to think on to end some people’s life but it just i thought though XD

  • Can’t you just leave out the information that turned out to be nullified? If a study was shown to be inconclusive, then why even mention it?

  • Its simple u overdose on coffee u die ive maxed out at 9 cups and only once but I didnt die I wouldnt go over that. I drink extra strong black coffee folgers grade I even put coffee grinds in it to make it stronger it could send black coffee drinkers to hell.

  • Coffee makes me feel amazing but I also sweat like a demon so I can only have a single shot of espresso once in the morning. I have a serious dopamine deficiency without it too

  • I got a caffeine overdose at my job. I feel like shit. You start vomiting, your head feels so light. Your heart beats stupidly fast. I have to eat and drink lots of water.

  • No matter how much coffee i drink it doesnt affect me anymoree
I started to drink coffee when i was 6 so i guess its because of that?? Im not very sure

  • Parents whose only solution to everything is “DRINK MORE WATER” are probably raising a glass (of water) to H2O and dunkin’ on them kids

  • Shouldn’t she have taken caffeine pills instead, as to test caffeine and not the rest of the stuff (sugar+additives) in energy drinks?

Guess they’re just doing a bit for TV, and not trying to do any real science here.

  • Coffee is the most powerful legal drug. My head exploded for 1 week after I quit. I am a very educated person, and I don’t want to promote conspiracy theories. But I think what happens here, both with Mayo and John’s Hopkins, they are paid here by the coffee lobbying to promote this shitty substance. I have no other explanation. Quit the drug now!

  • A good way to know if you’re drinking too much or too little is your pee color. Clear means you’re drinking too much, dark mean too little. You want a pale yellow! Slightly darker is ok too. You should really worry about red, and apple juice colored urine. As well as try to drink a bit less if it’s clear.

  • I`m twenty-five years old and keeping my problematic. Getting it up isn`t a problem, but my challenge is how to sustain a long lasting interaction. By following the guide given in this ED treatment, almost everything clicks and works. The treatment plan was too good to be true for me initially, but later found that it`s efficient and it stands true to its claims. Looking for this guide on Google, name of this tip is Kαylo Bacumlo
    thank you

  • He states correctly that caffeine is drug, it’s addictive, it causes stress (adrenaline), it disrupts your natural sleep/wake cycle… but then says drink up? WTF! Is this video sponsored by the coffee industry? Young people watch this channel, such propaganda is irresponsible and dangerous!

  • Before clicking on this video I said “Ha, I drink coffee” then he said coffee is more negative as I take a drink of my coffee Y’all I’m dead

  • no it doesn’t I’ve been drinking 2 cups of coffee everyday and I’m still sleepy everyday, play roblox for a few hours, and fall asleep and wake up at 7:00 hehe

  • drinking coffee lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes? most people use sugar in their coffee, I would like to see how they conducted this research. is this referred to black coffee?

also this nutritionist guy sounds uncertain by saying “may be good for use…” and “may contribute too…” also he says “possibility heart disease”. I wouldn’t trust this research as it seem questionable

  • With its stimulating effects, it’s easy to understand why coffee is the second most traded commodity on earth after oil. For many, it keeps us awake and moving through our busy days. But how does it work? What exactly does coffee do to your brain?

2Whenever you’re awake, a chemical called adenosine slowly accumulates in your brain and this adenosine binds to receptors which slow down brain activity. Ultimately, the more adenosine there is, the more tired your brain feels. Which makes sense as the longer you’re awake, the more fatigued you become. Conversely, while you sleep, the concentration of adenosine declines, gradually promoting wakefulness.

3 – But it turns out that the caffeine in your coffee is incredibly similar to adenosine in structure. The caffeine works its way through your bloodstream and into your brain where it starts to compete and combines with adenosine receptors. But because it’s not adenosine, the sleepiness effect isn’t felt. Adenosine can no longer bind, meaning its calming properties are diminished. Which is great for you when you’re feeling tired.

4 – However, with long term use of caffeine, your brain responds by creating more adenosine receptors, which means more caffeine is required to elicit the same response. It also means that when you try to quit drinking coffee or miss your daily intake, you might experience some withdrawal symptoms and feel more tired than you would have before you ever drank coffee. But the caffeine doesn’t stop there.

5 – It also stimulates the production of adrenaline – you know, the fight or flight hormone. This increases your heart rate, gets your blood pumping and even opens up your airways. Furthermore, it affects dopamine levels by preventing its reabsorption in the brain, which makes you feel happy. In fact, this is the exact same thing that cocaine does, just to a lesser degree. It’s a drug after all.

6 – This dopamine stimulation is also the aspect of coffee that makes it moderately addictive. So, can you drink too much coffee? It turns out there is a lethal dose of caffeine, which is somewhere around 150 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of your body. This means if you weigh 70 kilograms, you require 14,000 milligrams of caffeine to overdose.

7 – Put into perspective, an average cup of coffee contains roughly 150 milligrams of caffeine. Meaning if you’re 70 kilograms, approximately 70 cups of coffee would kill you. However, you would have to drink those cups all at once, making it effectively impossible to overdose on caffeine from coffee, since you wouldn’t be able to physically fit that much in your stomach.

8 – You would also start experiencing mania and hallucinations before getting to this point. Caffeine also has a half-life of around 6 hours. So, if you drank a standard coffee with around 150 milligrams of caffeine, after about six hours, there would only be around 75 milligrams left in your system and you’ll be feeling half of the effect.

9 – And 6 hours after that, you’ll have 37.5 milligrams, leaving more room for adenosine to jump back into action, which is why you may reach for another cup throughout the day to remain that glorious alert and energetic feeling. So, drink up and enjoy the buzz while it lasts.

10 – And for all of you who are in school, while we know that caffeine is key, so are good deals on textbooks. So, we’ve teamed up with to get you the cheapest prices for the books you need. All you have to do is head to 10 – and search the ISBN number of the books you’re looking for. SlugBooks will then compare prices from all across the net.

  • As someone with ADHD I can tell you first hand I can down 10 cups of coffee and feel no energizing effects whatsoever. All I usually get from coffee is no more than a tad bit better focusing abilities.

  • Normal people: drinks hot coffee at work or home

  • Tea is more addictive to me then something like cannabis.
The synergy between caffeine/other methylxanthines, catechins and l-theanine; gives a pretty amazing high.
It’s easier for me to experience euphoria on tea then on weed.
Tea makes me yappy, ganja just intensifies what’s already there.
Sometimes I just don’t feel like doing (usually vaping, smoke is just too bad for your lungs; and universe forbid adding tobacco, yuck… Everybody has their thing though, I personally just would never take up tobacco.)
weed. A feeling like I’m done with it for a while, I don’t really experience that with tea.
Also tea jacks me up and ganja makes me sleepy, I’m someone who has serious fatigue problems so I guess no wondering why my mind and body lend themselves to an herb containing a central nervous system stimulant.

I lived for about 3 months without caffeine once (no tea, no chocolate, nothing with cocoa in it,…), but I still got back into the tea habit. Days without tea are the most fatigued onces of them all. Those 3 months were pretty terrible. Only nice thing coming out of such a break is the fact that you can get even higher because your tolerance basically resets, I’ve done just 3 weeks also super hard not so long ago, and that also made a difference in my tolerance level.
Of all the herbs I have made ‘herbal tea’ from, of all the blends that I’ve tried and some made myself, nothing can compare to the aroma and psychoactive effects of (green) tea.
I guess being addicted to tea is still way less worse then being addicted to harder and/or more addictive stimulants like cocaine, amphetamine, nicotine, etc. though.

I wish I wouldn’t have to be addicted to anything (like the internet as well, which is even harder for me to lay down then tea)
but you got to have some light in your life I guess?
Drugs are the only thing after all that can literally on a biochemical level make a person happy.

  • I just spent 3min watching a video claiming caffeine increases heart rate… probably alertness too.
In other news the sky is still blue.

  • Ok so I only have one question: do the extra receptors you grow deplete to normal levels if you stop drinking coffee for long enough?

  • I rarely drink coffee but I’ve been up for 35 hours working so I decided to drink black coffee with 3 espresso shots so I can get through my 9 hour shift for today so I’m wes searching for the answer of “how long will it take for the coffee to kick in” & stumbled upon this video and while I wes watch this video I felt energized it kicked in.

  • Bruh this is like my 5th day not drinking water and I’ve been so tired all the time and its really hard for me to sleep. I will definitely be drinking more water from now on

  • People who say “oH iT gIveS u eNeRgY” are the people that are heavily hooked on it. Coffee is first made in Yemen in 15th century, so you are saying people who lived before that are lazy zombies? Just go to sleep earlier, take some power naps and exercise. I don’t even know why people love to drink it anyway, it tastes like mud with burnt ashes in it.

  • Iam a turkish migrant born in Germany and my mother is 48 and Iam 26, my mom is addicted to black tea so I got too and since my childhood we’re drinking black tea daily. Me and my mom literally never brushed our teeth for long periods of time, my mother even longer periods of time (months). I started taking care of teeth serious since Iam 18 my mother still hasn’t achieved this , but my mother has incredible teeth for her age and mine are good aswell. I think this stuff is really effective for teeth health.

  • Youtube really is the worst place for information but I’d rather drink coffee than drink soda. People seem to forget that people eat candy chocolate and drink soda like a newborn

  • Didn’t you run into the fact that tea blocks the absorption of non-heme iron? This puts vegetarians at risk of developing an iron deficiency.

  • Drinking coffee makes me sleepy all the time, doesn’t make me feel energized at all… I drink coffee to boost metabolism (1 cup a day) also helps reduce hunger

  • In my country people drink black tea before they do anything, and then they keep drink black tea while doing guess what they do when they have nothing to do?
And also it’s disrespectful, if host do not make enough heavy, fresh, and super hot black tea in Turkey

  • Wow. Just wow. You had to go inside an MRI machine to measure heart rate? Ever heard of a simple pulse oximeter? Even a dumb watch can do it these days.

  • Props to the animator, narrator and all the others who helped to make this video. I loved how everything in the video was moving like water:)

  • I like iced mocha because it keeps me awake during the day but I can’t drink too much coffee at night because I won’t be able to sleep

  • Doesn’t high itensity exercise have the same purpose? ( to elavate the heart rate?) ; Now we can do that by sitting on a couch and sipping coffee?

  • I’m also preparing some coffee. Am I doing it alright? Do you mind to check it? Thanks!

  • Your background music makes this difficult to listen to impossible while I’m trying to listen simultaneously to my own background music.  Background music is why I didn’t subscribe.  STOP BEING CUTE.  Have something to say, then say it, then stop.

  • Wu yi Dao-ang Pao tea is the best tea, red tea, not black tea. Other than this you should definitely try oolong tea and green tea.

  • 7 days ago i took 800mg then went into the gym and after that I went running, then I came back home and fell on the floor with the worst body feeling ever, I was shaking and my hands were completely numb and my heart was pumping like 120 times per minute then I rushed to the hospital and as it turned out i was having a panick attack because my stomach was making too much adrenaline from the caffeine, 2 days later i had another panick attack but less simptoms ant yesterday yet another one but even less simptoms… caffeine is not goof for everyone, it stick in your body for like next 7 days but you get better

  • well in germany those drinks contain less cafein then coffee. how does the energy differ? as far as i know its both just caffeine?! same shit different toilette. this is incerdiely missleading cause it focus on the drinks instead on the effects of caffeine. and you didnt even try to elaborate how why or even if there is a difference between drinking energy drinks and coffee.

  • I’ll be honest coffee tastes awful so it’s kind of hard to drink too much. Energy drinks are fruity and sugary making it easier to drink too much. Sometimes I’ll get a headache if I drink too much. Sometimes I’ll only take a sip or gulp of a drink that has caffeine.

Top tip: try sugar free energy drinks. they have sweeteners that dont spike your blood sugar nearly as much as white sugar.

The entire time they had that “expert” talking about the potential negative effects of caffeine overdoses, it sounded as if he was about to follow that with a “buuuuut…” and then go on about how unlikely that scenario is. BBC you’re no better than american news networks. Just instead of blatant outright lies, a poor attempt at showing a misleading version of the truth.

  • Define a “Standard can of an energy drink?” Are talking Red Bull, NoS, Amp, Full Throttle… There’s sooo much sugar (and other crap) in “energy drinks”.
