Calf Tear or Strain. NEVER Do This! Do This Instead to Heal FAST!

Video taken from the channel: Bob & Brad

Whether you made a move too fast, too quickly or too intensely, unfortunately, muscle sprains and strains happen. Usually, they result from trying to outperform your current capabilities, not warming up adequately, not using correct alignment during exercises (especially while lifting heavy weights and/or moving too fast) or pushing yourself when you are too tired. The amount of swelling or local bleeding into the muscle (from torn blood vessels) can best be managed early by applying ice packs and maintaining the strained muscle in a stretched position. Heat. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.

After you pull a muscle, immediately turn to the R.I.C.E method of recovery: rest, ice, compress and elevate. Take a break from the exercise, movement or activity that caused your muscle strain, then ice the area for 10-minute intervals as often as necessary. If you’re unsure if you have an abdominal strain or the symptoms do not quickly resolve, then you should be evaluated. Physicians and physical therapists can be helpful in guiding you in treatment that may speed your recovery. Recommended tool for this technique: Medium Density Foam Roller If you’re suffering with a strained or pulled hip flexor or groin muscle, this post is for YOU find out why they happen and more importantly what to do about it.

Unlike other common strains, this area doesn’t follow my typical theor.

Partial muscle tears, such as occur in sport, require more energetic treatment: in the early stages this consists of the application of an ice or cold-water pack, firm compression, elevation of the affected limb, rest for a day or so and then gradual mobilisation (see SPORTS MEDICINE).

  • I tore my calf muscle dancing… shame on me though, I didn’t stretch before going all out. This is very helpful! Unfortunately I didn’t know and I stretched it and kept dancing on it ‍♀️basically the things you said NOT to do

  • My doctor said I have a calf tear and to rest it for 6 weeks. I have and it still is acting up time from time. Why does it take soooo long to heal?

  • I would like to thank you guys for these useful tips, I got injured 15 days ago and the progress is too slow. I got shocked when heard it takes 2 months for a full recovery:D

  • Sooo idk if I have this. Problem I already to responded to one that I thought I had and my left calf is black. Itchy and really annoying because I can’t handle it!!!! Help meee

  • So it’s Monday night and I pulled left quad badly on Saturday night. I have track races on Wed. and as the fastest in my grade and my extreme ego and competitiveness to beat everyone, I’ve broke down multiple times in tears knowing I won’t be able to go.

  • I walked without stretching for an hour then I didn’t let myself heal. Then rolled a tire then strained my chest then a week later 3 weeks later I carried rocks.4 weeks stull in pain.

  • Overstretched my calves, could barely walk the next day. So I rested for 10 days and thought I was fine. Started running again, but the pain returned. Unfortunately, I continued running on the injury for 2 weeks (because running makes me feel good). This made the injury 10x worse. Here I am 2 months of rest later and my calves are still fucked. Probably going to need another 6 weeks at least of rest.

I just want to run again D: Take injuries seriously people, don’t be like me.

  • I got my calf strained 2 months ago JUST WALKING, though it was after a run. The first few days I applied cold and rested. Within a week I could walk normally but then it became extremely painful again by walking on the second week, no running involved. Ultrasound showed a small tear, started cryotherapy and dynamic reinforcement, no pain whatsoever during these.
For a month I could walk up and down hills without issue, only in flat eventually it started being painful at around the 2 mile mark.
Since, it’s only got worse. I can barely make 200 yards walking without the pain coming back up. Not even up/down makes a difference.
Second ultrasound just shows it’s scarring, ruling out any other undetected injury.
Already have my next doctor appointment but I’d like to know what you or your viewers think is going on.

  • Think i got a moderate tear while playing basketball. My question is why can’t i straighten out my right leg after a week and a half

  • Thank you! Could you do a video on deep bruises and blunt force muscle trauma? I was in a cycling accident where the bike hit the back of my calf very hard and I was limping around for weeks. I still haven’t fully recovered after 2 months.

  • grade 1 on tear on my calf playing tennis been to physio but still 6 weeks on its giving me issues first time having this, yuck.

  • I pulled my calf it’s been a week and days. It feels great one day, I can walk normally and the next day am limping a bit. You think its serious?

  • i love you guys. you are real. and helpful and funny! thank you. i strained an upper calf muscle on my right leg from going up a steep hill very quickly on my bicycle a couple weeks ago. i have been stretching and massaging, but your video helps me to focus more on the massage part.

  • I was wake boarding and I fell off, and a rope got caught around my calf and I had to go to the hospital for a muscle tear. Any advice?

  • I’m 14 and in very good health, I just started a football camp and while we were doing drills I tore something that runs from my ankle to my lower calf. I have workouts mon-sat so what is the soonest I should be able to participate and does anyone have any advice

  • So I guess I over worked the both of mine… Maybe too much weight but the weight I did 95lbs wasn’t hard for me so I did it? Now I know I haven’t worked them this hard in a long while which is probably why this happened.. but what do I do?!!! Do I seriously go to the doctor? If I put weight on my feet it feels like they are tearing! When I’m sitting they are throbbing! Help!

  • I can’t run for more than a mile without my calf feeling like it’s going to pull. The next day, I feel fine though. There’s no soreness. I take some time off, but always around a mile, my calf just can’t take anymore and I stop because I don’t want to tear it. I don’t know if it’s my shoes or whether there’s something more going on in my leg. I figured if it was more serious, I would have some residual pain the next day or so

  • I had the opposite result. Maybe its because my calf didn’t tear?? Anyway, I rested for a week with almost no results. But the second I started doing calf and hamstring stretches, I was back to walking normal within 2 days.

  • I think I tore my calf muscle it’s in the inner leg. I went hiking I started to sprint of the hill and I heard a pop. Since then I’ve been icing it and taking ibuprofen. But two days later after the injury I had to go to work and I am a customer service manager and I’m on my feet many hours nine hours a day. So I have no pain it’s just sore but it swells at the end of each day because I’m on my feet. I am currently limping but not as bad as the first two days when it happened.

  • Well, I fucked up. I was watching stretching videos and now it hurts worst than ever. It’s only been 3 days

edit: did the messages and holy cow I feel so much better after 30 seconds! thanks guys!

  • I just tore mine last night while playing basketball. I cant walk and dread dragging myself to the bathroom. I cant put any weight on my left leg. I feel like I got shot in my calf while doing a layup.

  • Forgot compress, you need to wrap it the first 24-48 hours when the ice isn’t on to keep it from swelling and keep it immobilized.

  • Pulled my quad last to last week, stopped playing immediately, ate well, rested, kept putting ice every hour for 5-6 days, then went back to play last week, and pulled again badly.
Went back too early I am guessing. Right now just going through the same process but will add the foam roller routine this time

  • Addendum: love my neighbors in Ohio, but being in southwestern PA is way better. If you can’t run, walk briskly up hills. Pittsburgh has a billion and it really helps. Walk 3 miles uphill and you’ve already rehabilitated everything.

  • this single video has helped me more than any other video or website I’ve seen combined. thank you all the information in this video was so helpful

  • Omg did mine totally wrong i put heat pad immediately:( i have pulled muscle on my upper front leg pain going to my hip as well, Can’t sleep on any side without extreme pain:(.

  • Thanks for your helpful videos! Strained my left calf 4 days ago this past Sunday while rushing around getting dressed to go somewhere! No major swelling, just felt the sudden pull and had trouble walking. Feels like Grade 1. Did RICE protocol for 48 hours but I inadvertently did mild stretching by gently flexing and extending my foot while lying in bed with my leg on pillows. On Day 3 I had to descend and ascend a few flights of stairs. Now I feel I may have overdone it as I did not use crutches and have been limping around my top floor walk up apartment. Did the cross friction massage several times for 3-5 minutes starting Tuesday night.

Is ICE/REST recommended on Days 4 and 5 if you made the mistake of slightly overdoing it within the first three days? Is mild stretching while laying in bed a good idea at this point? Day 4 my calf still feels pretty weak although not painful or swollen. Lying in bed with my laptop as I write, luckily I can work from home! Not sure about those stairs though….:-(

  • Love you guys, BUT… the only thing that is better than humor and funnyness is to conqure our problems, and every time funnyness wins, it seems to drag all sensible and seriousness down or away…. pls. remember that.

  • I did a really a huge number of pushup Intel felt that my chest and triceps are really damaged.I rested for a hole week and I still can’t do one pushup even if I tried really hard,I’m afraid that I killed my muscles. Can you please tell me if can still recover from this,or I will be like that for the rest of my life???? I’m really scared:(. (Sorry for my bad English )

  • You guys are my favorite. I watched your previous calf video, can you do a short video of the massage again. I’m not to clear on what I should feel and what directions the motion should be.

  • Love your videos. I’m wondering if you guys are familiar with the late Dr. Sarno and his works? Essentially emotions, i.e. anger, and it’s effect and/or cause of pain.

  • Update since the tour of one of my muscles in my calf two months ago. I am better my calf has since healed. I am still very careful because occasionally I get a little sore in the original l location where I tore my muscle. The soreness only lasts for a couple hours but that could be due to walking up and down an escalator every day and my work day. But I’m much better now thank you for posting this video it helped

  • Playing today, “sproing!” it sounded in my body’s internal audio system. Man, it hurt, my leg was just completely done no frigging way of playing on. Quickly home, sofa, leg up above heart, then by accident found this video, from which I went 20ICE + 40REST. Hopefully it works out fast! I have a son that expects me to play football!

  • Hi guys. Can you make more videos for ppl with back surgery (disks) in recovery. Dos and don’ts.. There are a few exercises in one video you made, but coukd you please make more? I think many physiotherapist are ill informed. For example i was told often i should do sit-up like exercises.. And nurses telling me its ok to to ignore back discipline (sitting up and down correctly)… Right after the operation.

  • Gargoyle socks! Hahaha! I will have to remember that one. Yes, definitely ice packs. I badly strained my calves at the gym and couldn’t walk. Ice packs fixed it right up.

  • How do yall magically know what’s going on with people? I tore my calf muscle last year in August. It’s starting to get tight and feel the same now and I feel like it’s going to snap again. Thank you!

  • Sooooo I was practicing my round offs during practice pulled my leg muscle I kept practicing it over a month now I tried to do another round off it hurt like hell f my life lol

  • Drugs and bandaid the medical model. Find a therapist who can find the reason why the pressure has gone to the calf to strain it. Treating other areas of the body is where the fast fix will come from typically a contracted hamstring or adductor from a tilted pelvis. Treating the site of the strain is the final phase. A good therapist will have you 100% in a week if you haven’t torn the calf.

  • Bro I have a boxing tournament then track tryout tomorrow and my muscle is fucking pulled bad I can’t walk on my left leg I’m about to get my ass whooped

  • Great Insights. Thank you for the information. Recently I had pain around my pec muscle area. I think it could be due to push-up or resistance bands. I stopped my workout activities and eventually the pain got better. I think we all needs to listen to our body. Gotta re-start my activities with gradual intensity. Stay Healthy peeps!

I was dancing and suddenly fell down…at that time I wasnt aware of wht happened to me so I massaged the muscle 3 times
I mean damn dude the pain was so severe….I couldn’t even walk properly……so I went to hospital

but I still havent recovered….I have to give test on 21 aug…..and that test is really imp for me…but I haven’t recovered yet moreover I have the same pain in my right leg as I had in the left leg
I am so tensed right now

  • I did some stretching few days ago and now I am feeling sharp pain in my right thigh (hamstring) when touching, moving my back backwards or my other leg forwards. I also began to notice a bump, no bruises just a small bump. Not sure if this counts as a muscle sprain or sth else.:(

  • i was playing football and i went to tackle but my head was down and its supposed to be up and then when i tackled my neck was hurting bad so i couldn’t play and im embarrassed and hurting but i think im a grade 1 or a grade 2

  • side splits! i did it and even bend my back then i heard a huge cracking sound now just i can’t even catch my feets while standing.

  • I hurt my calf whilst skateboarding and couldnt walk. Rested it for 2 weeks and went back on the board. Too soon:( Now rested another 2 weeks and a half, went for a run and its start flaring up again:( Wish I rested it properly now, no skating for me for a while now:(

  • I’m a competitive marathoner and just got a minor quad tear during my marathon a couple weeks ago. This is a great video, but here are a few supplemental tips…

    1. A quad muscle tear doesn’t generally heal with 3 days of RICE, it can take a couple weeks. So entering the rehab phase after only 3 days probably won’t work for many, especially. if you’re older. I’m 37 and with only a minor tear, 7 days off wasn’t enough to heal it and I re-aggravated it on an easy run.
    2. For whichever essential oil blend you use, make sure to mix in a “carrier oil” so that it absorbs more effectively. He uses olive oil, generally a coconut or jojoba oil would be used.
    3. A more potent essential oil blend that is anti-inflammatory and increases circulation is frankincense, thyme, myrrh and a carrier oil.
    4. Up your protein intake to help rebuild the muscle faster.
    5. Apply arnicare gel to sooth the muscle.

Good luck to everyone else in their recovery!

It feels so tight & makes my back feel like it wants to bend completely backwards. Idk what to do & I’m miserable.

I ice, take baths, and roll my legs. The pain tends to leave after a month. In the weeks off before seasons start, I work out everyday and roll/stretch. Why am I still having these problems?

  • the RICE method is a horrible way to heal a muscle. I understand why its used as I was taught it in school. But there is absolutely no scientific showing that Ice helps. infact its the opposite. as well as not moving.. you absolutely want to move, at least as much as possible the muscles around the area.. this video will change you total perspective.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UmJVgEWZu4
