  • Mines better, but I’m still learning and I’m not familiar with those apps, but my MD tested my genetic pathway. Cough medicine snyped my serratonin DNA. I haven’t had flus since my early 20s and virtually no colds, but I do have to be careful about a few things, kombucha, probiotics, some fruits or combos near bedtime, stress. Typical stuff. I stay clear of upsetting movies or TV shows, better a documentary early. Usually I sleep like a baby now.

Me: thanks. That totally helped. I totally didnt think to do something that makes me tired to get tired!

  • Another amazing hack that wasn’t mentioned, are blue light blocking glasses. I put them on when the sun sets, and by bedtime, I fall asleep so quickly, and feel great in the morning. Blublox are my favorite. They block out the correct frequencies of light compared to many others. Check them out if you like,

  • I try going to bed at 8 pm but can’t sleep until it’s 5am. Which often effects me at work, studies and I get tired throughout the day.

  • Hi. I hope this comment would be read. I can’t help myself not to think as I about to go to sleep. I have a lot in my mind I don’t know why. These are things actually do not bother me but I don’t know why. Can you help me about this? Thank you.

  • Read ‘Why We Sleep’ by Matthew Walker. I can’t recommend it enough. He’s been a sleep scientist for decades and goes into great detail about circadian rhythms (and why some of us are naturally night owls), sleep cycles, how much sleep we need (and why it’s so bad for your long term health to not get enough), how our brain works while we sleep and loads more. It’s all science-based and incredibly interesting. It’s really made me prioritise sleep over anything as it affects every single thing in your life. It’s probably the best health related book I’ve ever read and being chronically ill I read a lot of them! It’s a must read!

  • Right now I’m suffering from insomnia and fatigue. But I was blaming it on my hypothyroidism and chronic Migraines, so this video is very helpful and I will definitely try.

  • All sleep tracking devices are bogus. They hook you up to a lot of equipment when you go into a lab for a sleep study, and heart rate is the least of the metrics they track. You’d be better off reading some books by professionals than googling this stuff.

  • The Oura Ring seems the best tech for tracking sleep at the moment, it adds core body temp as well as what the others do and it’s pretty high tech and has been independently tested in a sleep lab…. and gives you stress and readiness scores and goes into your sleep cycles etc… but it’s 2 300 €/$ depending on if you can get a code to buy it. Seeing as you’re a YouTube celeb you might get a good deal.

  • If you have trouble concentrating, sleeping or relaxing this channel is really very good, it helped me a lot, it is also very visual, take a look Perfect Harmony Music

  • I’m very much like you and have always been. I’m having trouble when I go to bed at 10 pm though, I’ll often wake up at 2 or 3 in the morning unable to go back to sleep. Then, if I can, I’ll get a 2 or 3 hour nap and that will increase my insomnia problem. My sleep doctor just thinks I’m not disciplined about going to bed every night at the same time and getting up at the same time. Oh and don’t use any caffeine to help stay awake. That can be dangerous I get so sleepy.

Thank you for this video. I do have a full spectrum light, it’s so bright I noticed my sight had those spots like when you accidentally look at the sun. I started to wonder if it was bad for your eyes. I’ll give it a shot again.
Would love to see a part 2!

  • Depending on where you live, you could also just go outside in the sun first thing in the morning:) So glad this is helping you, Gillian!

  • Dr Greg Wells who works at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto also works with elite athletes. He focuses his studies on the importance of rest and the affect on performance. Checkout his articles on “sleep hygiene” and his book on performance. In particular, the best conditions for quality sleep..

  • I have insomnia cause I quit smoking weed 3 days ago. Never had in my life before now. My body got so used to smoking before bed that I don’t feel tired anymore when I dont. I don’t know what to do, I got maybe 3 hours if sleep a night for the last 3 days. I tried melatonin tonight and it didn’t help at all.

  • Sleep for Android is an app that you can have monitor your sleep with a wearable AND it will allow you to make customized settings for how early you’d like it to wake you before your set alarm based on where you are in your sleep cycle. You can also have it wake you up with requiring to scan a QR code which I put in the bathroom. I never accidently slept through my alarm since I’ve had this app!

  • I wake up at 2 AM

Doctors prescribe meds that make my head foggy for 3-4 weeks

  • Ways to help improve SLEEP

Weak kidneys can affect our sleep, so we can try to tap or rub the lower back to help improve the kidneys. Try to eat more black beans and black sesame seeds, they’re beneficial for the kidneys.

Poor blood circulation can also affect our sleep, we can eat ginger in the morning to help improve blood circulation. Don’t eat ginger in the evening or at night because it makes us harder to sleep. We want to remain calm at night.

Avoid light before sleeping, light makes the brain active. You can try to download a blue light filter for android, and use Night Shift on iOS. Too much blue light can affect our physical and mental health. You can also download a blue light filter for the computer as well.

There is a hand gesture that can help improve sleep, it’s call ‘gyan mudra’. You can google the picture. Do it with both hands, this hand gesture can help relax the body and mind. I taught some people, most of them said it helped them sleep better.

Meditation helps calm the mind and sharpen the brain. Meditation is not about sitting, but to make the mind more peaceful. So you can sit on a chair, and recite “one, two, three, one, two, three…” to help the mind stay focus. Wandering mind makes us unable to remain calm. Train your mind daily, and the more focused you are, the more energy you have. So, you will sleep better.

Try to avoid music or songs that makes us hyperactive, hyperactive only makes our mind go crazy. Try to listen to music that makes us more calm.

When the mind is calm and peaceful, the blood flow becomes better. When the mind is filled with depression, anxiety, fear, hatred…etc, these can create blockages in our body that affects our physical and mental health. Before we sleep, tell ourselves that”I love all beings, I forgive all beings, I am sorry for what I have done wrong, and thanks for everything.” We usually believe what we think, so stay positive, so our mind will become more positive. It’s better to be neutral, but being positive is easier for beginners. Saying these can stop our mind from creating more negative thoughts that prevent us from being healthy and happy. I am not denying that there are physical sufferings, but at least we can lessen our mental sufferings. “Thanks for everything” means to accept the fact, if our mind keeps fighting and avoiding suffering, then there will be more suffering. Once we accept it, and be loving and forgiving, the mental suffering will disappear or least there will be less pain. To forgive is basically stopping our mind to creating more sufferings for ourselves.

Lack of sleep makes us weaker, look older, poor memory, physically and mentally weak. It affects the way we live. Good Luck!

  • Great videoThank you. The Headspace app has a sleep button with white noise and soft voiced narrators telling a story to lull you to sleep. I’ve had good luck with this the past few nights.

Headspace is a popular meditation app with cute animations, available on both iOS and Android. Most of its content is locked behind the $12.95/month (or $95.88/year) subscription but so far worth it. They sometimes offer discounts so if you sign up for the free 10 days and don’t purchase immediately, they will eventually send you a coupon. I recommend it.

  • Thanks for this tip Gillian.
I’ve been having the same problem with staying up late and sleeping in late. Having been an early riser through my thirties and forties, it’s rather annoying.

I think I’ll try out the full spectrum light.

  • I was fine before10:30pm-7am…. now I go to bed at like 10:30pm and can’t sleep till maybe 3am?? Including a few panic attacks and worrying.
I’ve found a way that has kind of helped me… if you have a cat maybe, just let it sleep with you. Then stroke and talk to your pet. You’re distracted and relaxing which will cause you to fall asleep.:)
Having my cat with me has really helped.
I still can’t fall asleep straight away, but it really helps.:D

  • I was sleeping perfectly fine for soo longggg and then I got sick. When I started feeling better my anxiety went ↗️ all of the sudden. I was so confused my heart started beating fast in the night and I couldn’t sleep. I then started getting random panic attacks in the night. (And I’ve have had my Anxiety Disorder since pre-k but I’ve never gotten panic attacks) my parents said to try and control it but I can’t because I’ve never had these panic attacks. Yesterday and today I slept pretty good through the morning but during the night when I’m like superrrrrr tired and I close my eyes I just can’t fall asleep? And the thought of not falling asleep led me to more panic attacks. I haven’t gotten good sleep in like 4-5 days. I don’t know what to do? I can’t go back to therapy because of corona-virus:(

  • I’m having insomnia and sleep anxiety almost for 1 year, because of the fear of not able to sleep that triggers the adrenalin and became like loop condition. ANXIETY ABOUT HAVING INSOMNIA THAT MAKES INSOMNIA ITSELF. Now I’m taking medicine alprazolam, sulpiride and mirtazapine antidepressant but sometimes these medicines don’t work and I still anxious and cannot be asleep, sometimes I don’t sleep at all for 2 or 3 days, and also I have physical condition issue because of my tension in my neck and back of the head. Please any suggestion may helps…thanks

  • If you struggel with insomnia I can recommend you to listen to sounds of Nature or to meditate. This link might help you:

  • I have t rut trouble staying awake. As long as I’m busy I’m fine, the minute I sit to watch a movie or do AANYTHING for that matter, I’m out. I dont sleep more than 2 hours at a time, Dr. said it’s not “restful” sleep, because I never reach REM. Pain causes me to need to move each turn mental

  • I have the worst insomnia… did Fentanyl and heroin for several years so my sleep pattern is screwed I’m always tired at work now… God bless anyone In distress we go thru a lot and to not be able to rest is a hell on earth

  • give us all the war on medicine  pipe line answer.   let  us talk. talk. talk. then I will pray for you ( and pray that your  $400 check does not bounce).

  • I have not missed a day of work. We are an essential business. In bed at 10:00 and up at 5:00. At work by 6:00. Same as its always been. Don’t really watch the news. The media only makes things worse. I’m just wondering how much longer we have to hear millionaire actors tell us to stay home and everything will be ok.

  • I haven’t been able to sleep since two Thursdays ago the original not sleeping had led to anxiety and not able to go to sleep exactly what I’m experiencing now all the items you listed

  • Does anyone else think theirs a certain weakness to people now a days? Like an inability to emotionally and mentally handle things our ancestors had to deal with all the time? I’d think having some real problems for once might have toughened people up a little, not so sure though.

  • It is so sad that the America has become a nation of pussies. There used to be men and women in this country but now just adult children afraid of every boogie man that the media pushes. You have to remember their biggest sponsors are for anti-anxiety medications. It is their job to keep you scared all the time. Stop falling for all their BS, enjoy your life.

  • What I tend to do is just to let go of what ever is happening in my mind before bed, and tell yourself that tonight nothing matters, whether it’s the fear of death, the fear of the unknown, or just general fear of life. I just tell myself and you can just worry about it the next day. I know this won’t be the same for everyone reading this, and for some it might not work, but really do try it if you have trouble sleeping.

  • If you’re having trouble sleeping because of the Corona virus, simply have someone slap you across the face, shake you and scream, “snap out of it you hysterical ninny!” That should do the trick.

  • you should sleep continuously for at least six hours sis, Apple watch is pretty accurate; sleeping after midnight is must for mental health…unless you work in the night shift

  • I simply can’t meditate. I’ve tried so many times and it does not work because first of all I can’t focus but another thing is that the deep breathing aspect causes me to feel like I’m suffocating. It’s physically uncomfortable to slow down and deepen my breathing because of the pressure in my chest. I know in order to reduce that pressure I need to change my breathing somehow but the slow deep breathing actually causes me more anxiety because of the suffocation feeling. I can’t seem to get out of this.

  • It’s 2 in the morning and I haven’t slept at all. Now I’m watching this video and laughing nervously when he gets to the “no screens in bed”.
Honestly I’ve been sleeping at 2 for a month, and I’m only a middle schooler. So I’m waking up later and later, sometimes at 10:30

  • just smoke a joint and quit listening to this bullshit. Corona virus anxiety is fucking rediculous, quit empowering the shitty mainstream media and government to have power over you. Just be smart and you’re fine, even if you get it chances are extremely high you’ll be fine. Quit empowering fake news and fearmongering, don’t buy into those pieces of shit trying to play you. You’re better than that. This is psuedo science crap, it all boils down to the system working against you and simple minded people putting way too much faith into things they shouldn’t because the avenues they put this faith are manipulative, malicious, and against you in every way.

  • This virus has shown me how nice it is to be an introvert. The virus doesn’t concern me at all. To much bull about it. Hey doc why don’t you tell us how to sleep while in physical pain.

  • Been up since 8 am yesterday nd its 4 am now. Body is in pain can’t really relax when my is too focus on the pain with my breathing

  • I do mostly eat the rainbow diet from Tree of Life. Animal products really make me feel anxious. Honestly, it may sound weird but I used to have terrible nightmares, and heebee geebees during storms.

  • Dear Gillian, I am a fan of your Chanel, but I can not agree with this information. It is very unhealthy to have a cell phone in the same room where you sleep. It is common knowledge… Please research on this topic.

  • Go to a gym people or do any kind of physical action cause it will make you tired. And when you’re tired you will sleep and stop thinking too much.

  • That sounds really interesting.

One thing I want to comment on: you said you have a balanced-diet. As far as I know, you eat animal products, including meat, eggs and dairy. I really recommend doing more research about that! I wouldn’t be surprised if that was also one of the causes that messes up your body.

I had no idea how many antibiotics and chemicals are being injected into the animals and then into the animal products…. facts like: if cows are beings fed 20% grass the package of the meat can have a label “grass-fed” also show up once you do your research.

(And then there also he environmental issues like: 50% if all plastic in the ocean comes from the fish industry/ finish nets.)

Anyway, I highly recommend looking into it! Make sure the studies are not sponsored by the meat/ dairy etc. industry!

A study worth checking out is the one made by he university of Oxford and J. Poore. Just google it:)

Good luck and thank you for your videos:)

  • Hey Gillian! Thanks for the awesome video as always. Thanks for info about those types of apps. I’m going to look into these.

I’m starting a channel in a month about affiliate marketing with a holistic approach so a wide range of topics all angled toward AM.

Sleep will definitely be a topic since it’s so critical to health, mood, drive, creativity, resourcefulness, and more.

A key to your sleep issue is your general life approach. You are primarily a thinker. You use logic to analyze and troubleshoot your challenges. (Which is great) You overuse your logical mind habitually. This will result in active memory. That is memory with relatively high emotional content (resulting in restless mind). Meditation alone will usually not be a solution. Natural light is effective for you because it induces Natural State, calming/balancing the separation damage done by habitual overactive conscious mind.

If you approach the sleep issue as well as other activities with your conscious mind as observer and supervisor of/to your entire bodymind complex (includes unconscious mind) then you will unload tasks that burden you but that are not done by cannot be done by conscious mind.

In example, when going to bed I simply address my UM to wake me up in the most optimal way and time before (my alarm time). 100% of the time I do this I wake up b4 my alarm feeling as good as possible depending on all other factors.

Natural light tip: If you look directly at the sun 15 minutes from sunset/sunrise you you get a gentle but massive dose of balancing light. No artificial light comes close as it has information which the artificial does not have.

In the place of a sunset or sunrise you can close your eyes in front of any type of light and imagine looking at the sun. The results are very close to the same.

  • The full spectrum late isn’t practical. I’ve researched into it before, and if you look on the box or even the description of the amazon listing you’ll see that in order to achieve any benefit the light has to be at maximum 20inch from your eyes. Ideally 6inches from your eyes. You’ve got it like 3 feet from your eyes. Which is where I would prefer to have it but all these brands make it clear it has little effect that far away.

I work with a guy who uses it and it’s way to bright for my taste, and to have it that close. May provide a placebo effect but not worth it for me

  • I’m supposed to start my first day of school in a couple of hours and I can’t fucking sleep… I’m so behind in my year since I haven’t been attending a school in months and now I’m gonna be drowsy on my first day in a new school ;-;

  • Who else is watching this in corona time? Only me okay good job me it’s 5am and my dad already going home after his night shift! I hate my life!!

  • I like the idea of a simple awareness scan better than the ones that tell you to relax each part of your body. I end up focusing so much on trying to relax my knee or whatever that everything else tenses up, but just feeling it in a more general sense sounds easier I’ll give it a shot!

  • Also getting out of bed until tired is the best strategy because you don’t start tossing and turning (plus if it’s summer your bed doesn’t become hot) its way more comfortable once you get back.

  • Okay not sleep or business related whatsoever but would you ever consider doing a hair and makeup tutorial? Your hair is so beautiful and you always look so put together!!

  • I have insomnia and I’m only 14 years old i thought I was the only person who suffers from that problem but there is 100 million other people.I feel less like a freak.

  • That last few weeks, I’ve been waking up very anxious between 2:30a and 4:30a. It’s been awful, especially since it doesn’t seem to be linked any particular fear or worry. I think it’s just the events of the past few months (my father died, then COVID was a concern, then the lock-down, then a series of tornadoes in my area which is VERY unusual) catching up with me.
It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one experiencing this.

  • Autosleep and autowake apps for Apple Watch are supposed to track your sleep and wake you up in the optimal zone like the alarm you mentioned. I’ve been using them for a while and don’t know if I feel like they are very accurate or are helping me.

  • Turn off your television, and quit letting them control your thoughts. Y’all have put YOURSELVES in your own prison. It’s 90 degrees, and people are still wearing masks….wake up!

  • Being home for the last few months, I have had the best sleep that I have had in a long, long time. I am now eager for retirement to come. This has been a wonderful preview of what leaving work behind will be like.

    do exactly as you’re told,

  • I have all the problems that make COVID-19 fatal for me: age, diabetes with neuropathy, heart disease, and asthma. But I started masking and gloving in February, here in Georgia, and have been ultra-diligent about handwashing, as have my wife and younger son who live with me. We are preppers, so we already had everything we needed for at least a year’s living. These measures alone have completely eliminated my anxiety. All this is to say, if you’re doing everything you should, then you’re in a great position to survive.

  • I have the fitbit Versa… It does track my sleep and it does have a silent alarm. You have to set a time but it will vibrate on your wrist until you turn it off

  • I had the same problem, the blue blocking glasses helped somewhat but what ‘cured’ it is following a ketogenic diet (at least after the initial adaptation phase which was worse). Of course if I don’t follow my diet faithfully it comes back so it’s not really cured, its managed.

  • I tried the app sleep cycle and basically it let me know I wasn’t sleeping because of my husbands snoring. It has a sister app called life cycle that tracks what you do during the day and the apps work together. After one month of tracking it told me I sleep better after grocery shopping. Useless but funny. I could not tolerate wearing a watch on my wrist while trying to sleep.

  • I’ve never experienced anxiety over the Coronavirus, however…My sure fire method for getting to sleep…
I use my wireless headphones, then I place it in one ear (the one not on the pillow) and then I play the free audio Bible from at a volume level so low that it is just loud enough for me to make out what is being said. It never fails…it calms my mind and I am usually asleep in under fifteen minutes.

  • HELP ME!!! Alright, so I don’t know where else to put this. My best friend, the person I care about most in the entire world, the first person who I’ve ever felt calm around and connected to has trouble falling asleep. It started when I noticed him acting really tired. I asked if he was ok, he said he was fine. This happened quite a few more times and as we started to be closer friends, he confided to me that he doesn’t sleep until around 2-4am and only gets 3 or so hours of sleep most nights. He doesn’t recognise it as a problem and he once described it as “feeling really awake and really tired, like being high”. As far as i know he has not expearanced any halluctions. We are both 13, nearly 14. His mum has never really given him a bedtime, and from what I can gather (from talking to him) he watches youtube, plays games, ect.. until he passes out. Every time I bring it up, he gets a really serious look in his eyes for a moment, then makes some joke about something. It’s not that it’s not a problem for him, it is a problem and he won’t accept it. It affects his behavior, he’s sooo much less aware when he’s had 2 hours of sleep than like 6. He also flirts like crazy with this one guy he likes, and it’s painfully obvious to me, I’m not sure if it’s obvious to the others or not. I can’t talk to his mum or my mum about it, MY mum already knows and doesn’t really care. HIS mum knows too and she can’t do anything about it. She mostly lets him do whatever he wants sometimes and only teaches him the bare mimimum to pass his GCSE’s (we’re both home-schooled) I’ getting pretty stressed about his problem (that’s the anxiety) and I just don’t know what to do!! I need someone to help!! I’m so sorry about spelling, I typed this in a rush. PLS HELP!

  • I’m usually tired when trying to wake up for the first 30 minutes (even on enough 8 hour sleep), so if I don’t #sleep I don’t feel tired for longer and get more done, and then it reaches its limits at a 18-22+ hour sprint (On a proper commute work day cycle, we’ll generally get tired after 12-14 hours of being awake).
