  • Please don’t recommend regular NSAID use in the elderly, especially those with diabetes. NSAIDs increase the risk of ischaemic heart disease and worsen heart failure, along with risk of gastric ulceration. I’m actually surprised they managed to get ethical approval to give elderly patients 1200mg of ibuprofen daily. Also the singular of nuclei is nucleus. Otherwise was an interesting update, thanks.

  • I, as male, got anemic on a keto regimen high in chese, butter and veggies, worse even than my terrible vegan year, according to the lab test (and sluggishness). Plenty of red meat, few cheese and veggies, iron is ok and so the energy levels

  • Great video. I myself stopped taking ibuprofen at around 800-1200mg/day over concerns that it could blunt muscle growth. A few points: 1) ibuprofen isn’t COX2 specific, it also hits COX1 hence the GI concerns with it 2) folks in the comments please don’t bitch about the dose go to CVS if you doubt how much ibuprofen is consumed in the US. 1200 or 1600mg or more is taken by HUGE numbers of individuals. Just look it up 3) the elderly piece is interesting. I’m a physician/lifter who works in inflammatory research on IL6. One thing that is noted is that individuals with elevated IL6 due to autoimmune disease (e.g. Rheumatoid arthritis) have artificially LOWERED lipid levels. This is a concern because cardiovascular disease is what kills RA patients at an increased incidence rate vs. normal population, yet if they have lowered LDL/HDL/trigs then what is going on? Well, it turns out that the inflammatory state drives lipid levels below normal in these patients while keeping them at increase risk for CV disease (this is referred to as the “lipid paradox”). We now know that lipids are only a part of the picture in reducing CVD risk. If you block IL6 in these patients, their lipids bump up, but their CVD risk goes down. So I do think that there could indeed be a “sweet spot” also in the elderly in general, who are likely hyper inflammatory where some NSAID exposure could help bring them back into a range where muscle growth could improve. Of course the elderly in general tend to suffer from muscle wasting generally with aging. So, bottom line for me, I’ll only take it if I really need to like during an injury, but it should also be noted that you need to be exposed to ibuprofen over a longer term in order for the full anti-inflammatory effects to be noted. If I recall correctly, this is at least for a few days. I wonder what the COX2 specifics do to muscle growth (celecoxib, etc), which BTW folks are also not the same class as ibuprofen/naproxen, which also hit COX1. Cool video. Thanks

  • This guy….ugh. listen folks. 10k years ago we didnt have refrigeration… milk rarely ever was drank. It was cultured. Get a hold of some high quality grass fed and finished Jersey cow milk…and make kefir. Clabber. Butter or yogurt and eat it daily and often. Ugh this guy. I make kefir weekly. It has essentially zero lactose in it due to being pre digested by bacteria. I wish this guy understood traditional foods and fermenting

  • I went on a dairy elimination diet years ago, thinking it may help with mucus & allergies. After 3 months, no change. Turns out it was simply a heap of different grasses. Doen the track i discovered I do way better with fewer carbs, especially refined grains. However, I do mostly buy small farm local dairy.

  • Dude, I watch your videos, but this one, and a few others, make me question your knowledge. I have never heard more rubbish about the diary industry than what you spew in the first few minutes. The reason dairy quanitity has risen so dratatistically, and halted over the couple years, is beacuse of the improvements in breeding. Jersey calls you use be found on pratically every other farm, but some farmers brought in some holestiens that can naturally produce double of what jersesy cows can and more milk than any other cow breed can. Also, the cows still get grass. They just get it in forms of hay. Important to note, the formalization of cattle diets have increased the out put of all cattles whether it be meat or etc

  • Wow.. Very misleading video. It’s easy to get raw, locally produced, grass-fed milk from good breeds of cows. It’s possibly to get cows that produce A2/A2 milk which has the original unaltered protein for better muscle development, fat burning, and mental energy.     For diet reasons i been working out for 2 months eating really healthy and my weight wasnt going down! So decided to quit milk as i was having so much in my coffees through the day.   • I had spinal fusion surgery and lumbar discs completely removed and replaced with artificial bone material and was told post surgery not to take ibuprofen for at least 3 months as it would hinder my recovery and healing process..  thats major surgery healing let alone muscle hypertrophy, so clearly it effects the process negatively

  • Because the “anabolic window” is a protein sales myth. The original study that sparked that whole thing was paid for by a (now defunkt) RTD protein brand. What was never mentioned was that the test group that experienced the highest gains was the protein + creatine group, and by a lot. The protein-right-after-working-out group saw little gains over the protein-whenever group.

  • The more I work on lab reports and read studies the more I understand that people don’t really get study design at all. Like, a study (or method) can have plenty of flaws but it doesn’t necessarily imply that the conclusions are invalid. In fact, they can offer insight to improve future work. Much like you’ve pointed out here that the combined data from all studies might shed light on what’s happening. If we had perfect study designs we would probably already know the answers. But you always see keyboard warriors complaining about some factor or another but it’s likely they’ve never actually undertaken any work in the field. Anyway, I digress. Great stuff as always Layne!   • But is antibiotics the only way to treat chronic inflammation? What if they can’t find what causes the inflammation? How would you proceed then? Just take a generic antibiotic to see if it works? I have this exact issue of high inflammatory markers very high CRP and PV but despite numerous blood tests to see where it stems from they couldn’t find a thing except a very slight elevation in anti-nuclear antibodies. My Drs say that I’m probably just someone whose normal range of these markers is a bit higher than the national average and nothing they can do about it. But I have the same problem of never being able to lose weight on keto and even on carnivore the weight loss is excruciatingly slow to negligible despite eating OMAD, red fatty meat, coffee/cream and water. It would be very interesting to know what people like me can do to combat this mysterious inflammation without the aid of Drs who are savvy about these things like Dr Mason.   • it depends on when you take it. Ive experimented a great deal and found taking a low dose 3-4 hours before a workout and then having caffeine as well pre workout to have the best effects. Taking them after a workout seems to have negative effects. When I take the ibuprofen 3-4 hours pre workout it seems to leave my system by the time i am done with my workout and then my body has a rebound effect where it jacks up its inflammatory markers post workout increasing gains. it increases your bodies response to weight training if you can get the timing correct.

  • So I’m bleeding 14 days after my last period started. Which is around ovulation day. I don’t have any pain or cramps, and it’s like spotting but this is slightly heavier than my normal spotting but definitely lighter than my normal period. Would anyone know why this happens, ovulation bleeding maybe. I’ve read about it but I’m not sure and I’m afraid to go top the doctor and get a pregnancy test.

  • It can be so much more complicated than this. I have been carnivore since April 2018, and my serum iron kept tanking (ferritin was as low as 30; though a decade prior it was as low as 9, but has been up since then). I don’t have heavy periods, or GI problems. I eat mostly red meat. I was even taking heme iron supplements. I even tried them every other day. I had lost 10 lbs (to a healthy weight) when I first started carnivore, but then started slowly gaining. And I was TIRED. Thyroid panel kept improving. I learned from EONutrition that Riboflavin (B2) deficiency can cause you to not absorb iron. I started taking B-100, and BAM, iron, ferritin, hemoglobin, etc finally started going up. But I also GAINED 30 lbs. I stopped the iron supplements. Don’t really know what to do at this point and the weight just won’t budge.

  • I still don’t see what is wrong with hormone-free pasture raised whole milk in moderation. I’ve never gotten an upset stomach from milk in my life. Milk is so incredibly dense in vitamins and minerals that it very well could be beneficial if you’re tolerant to it. Just because we’ve only been consuming something for a few thousands years doesn’t necessarily indicate it’s bad for us. It’s thought that we’ve only consumed olives for around 6,000 years, avocado consumption can only be traced back 10,000 years, and the list goes on.

  • I have to ask since no one as yet has discovered why…I suffer from both very low ferritin levels, high inflammation and despite taking a high quantity (as prescribed) of ferrous fulmate twice daily, nothing changes. I haven’t been able to lose weight in years. I had put it down to a fairly inactive lifestyle due to requiring crutches to walk and because of repeated chest infections that have now put me on long term antibiotics.

  • ah i have been trying to lose weight for like 2 years (im 17 now) but i would lose very little weight and then gain alot, i got sick of me trying for nothing and asked dad to go to a dietition, after 2 months with her and only losing 1.8kg in total she recommended i do some blood tests, my hgb was 11.6, ferretin was at a 3.5, b12 was low, my mcv, mchc and mch were all low e.g. m.c.h. was 23.1, my RDW was high (18.8%), my HDL was 52 and LDL was at a 123. i took an iron infusion a couple of days ago and i am on statins and b12 pills. I really hope i get better and start losing weight!!!!!

  • Exactly. It’s more likely that the inflammation is the result of excess mechanical strain and it can occur more often to people with too much mobility on certain joints.
    More so if they are lifting for a PR or/and using poor lifting-mechanics.

  • Inflammation is a stage in the healing process. If you reduce inflammation by taking ibuprofen or icing it’s going to slow down the healing process and take you way longer to recover.
