Weight Loss is a Complicated Effort Weight loss seems as though it ought to be easy enough; eat less and move more. If losing pounds is purely a matter of fewer calories eaten and extra calories burned, why do so many people who understand the equation struggle with their weight?Weight loss is hard. It’s even tougher when you fall victim to these hard truths. Zave Smith/Getty Images Why is it so hard to lose weight? It’s a question many, if.

Being stuck at a weight-loss plateau eventually happens to everyone who tries to lose weight. Even so, most people are surprised when it happens to them because they’re still eating carefully and exercising regularly. The frustrating reality is that even well-planned weight-loss efforts can stall. And that’s exactly how you lose weight with little effort. You put all the effort on strategically building the habit, and then the habit does all the work for you.

No more losing weight, gaining it back, losing some more, gaining it back, etc. Instead, you lose the weight, and that’s it! You no longer need to think about it. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, aim to lose it at a slow but steady rate of 1–2 pounds (0.45–0.9 kg) per week. Research shows that slow, steady weight loss is easier to maintain.

Then, when they inevitably don’t lose weight from “eating healthy”, they go back to their old diet, because they “can’t lose weight’. Also, health food/organic marketing is the devil. You can take an organic granola bar that is advertised as being healthy and high protein and compare it to a box of Cheez-Its and they have the same cals and same. Unexplained weight loss, or losing weight without trying — particularly if it’s significant or persistent — may be a sign of an underlying medical disorder.

The point at which unexplained weight loss becomes a medical concern is not exact. Unintentional weight loss can be a sign of a more serious underlying health issue and, if not managed properly, can have a negative impact on overall health and wellness. Learn more. Nearly 27% of seniors over the age of 65 drop weight involuntarily.

When you lose weight, your body fights back. You may be able to lose quite a lot of weight at first, without much effort. However, weight loss may slow down or stop altogether after a. This problem is actually fairly common and can be extremely frustrating.

  • Hi there, have you considered Custokebon Secrets yet? Simply do a google search. On there you’ll find an awesome suggestions about how exactly you can lost lots of weight. Why don’t you give it a shot? perhaps it’s going to work for you too.

  • I have a question for intermittent fasting: is it possible that fasting could lead to more headaches? The reason I say this is because when blood sugar levels reach a low, it is a common cause for headaches, along with being hungry.

  • i have never been able to lose the weight i gained with my meds. does anyone know of a mechanism that couldve been turned off in my body? i never ate more i just got bigger and that was it. its been a nightmare since. its been 5 years and i havent lost the weight.

  • It is true some foods are a problem. I can not stop. I use to work for McDonald’s. It is a combination of salt, sugar and fat. It lights up your brain.

  • i got psycosis diganosis after probably 4 session with shrink, i ate the pills as the shrinko told me to do, after 3 weeks i looked like a balooon with empty stare, i was not only fat, i was discusting fat, so what i did, i just trowed the pills in the garbage, started train and fired my shrinko and today i feel and look like a million dollar, i also ate herbs like aschwnaga herbs, macca etc which was very good for my mental state also for my already recovered libido.

  • my mother hides the scale so i don’t know my weight, i would estimate 115. I am trying to go down because that is pretty large compared to classmates. Maybe i am regular weight but everyone else is skinny.

  • Hello Dr.
I would love to hear your opinions on reactive hypoglycemia, anxiety and weightloss. Your videos are impressive and siper helpful!

  • My very own buddy has went from the FORTY-ONE inch waistline to a THRITY FOUR inch waistline withthis guidebook “Kαbοnοz Ydα” (Google it). I have been having this manual for 7 days and I`ve by now seen a positive change. I am much more productive and lost Seven lbs of my very own bodyweight..

  • You, doctor, ought to be ashamed of yourself! Nobody needs a TEAM to be successful to lose weight! This is just a money making RACKET!!! Just watch Cole Robinson (Snake diet) for the easiest way to lose weight! Costs you NOTHING and easy as breathing.

  • This video is bullcrap, just get yourself a towel, remember:

    Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow.
    But if we are wise,
We know that there’s always tomorrow.

Lean on me when you’re not strong
I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you lose some pounds
    For it won’t be long
‘Til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.

    Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
    That you won’t let show.

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you’ll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

Lean on me when you’re not strong
And I’ll be your friend I’ll help you lose some pounds
    For it won’t be long
‘Til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you’ll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

    If there is a load
    You have to bear
    That you can’t carry
    I’m right up the road
    I’ll share your load
    If you just call me.

Call me if you need a friend
    Call me, call me, uh-huh
Call me when you need a friend
Call me if you ever need a friend
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
Call me if you need a friend
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me, call me
    Call me

  • you are lucky the weight barely shows i gained 100+ pounds on olanzapine seroquel and risperidone finally tapering off the seroquel now and am hoping the weight will sluff off but dont worry you look great! my knees hurt lol i cant even skateboard now! so i am hoping once i stop the seroquel the weight will go away wish you nothing but the best but seriously dont let it get you down you look fantastic!

  • The real way to loose weight with minimal effort:
    1. Don’t eat processed food
    2. Don’t eat too much sugar
    3. Stay hydrated and drink WATER
    4. Have a proper sleeping routine
    5. Eat from smaller plates.
    6. Find a sport that you might enjoy e.g. dance, rock climbing, skipping, yoga etc
    7. Become pescatarian

You don’t necessarily need to do all of them but these most certainly help, or atleast helped me.

  • Keto has completely prevented me from gaining weight. I got bipolar disorder, ocd and hypochondria, exercise and this diet helps but by no means cures it. I’m actually really glad you do the keto too because my psychiatrist thought I was being silly by doing this diet.

  • I cant eat a lot at one time. But that doesn’t mean I dont eat a lot. I eat small portions of unhealthy food often through the whole day. The days I don’t have school I end up gaining weight but when I go back I lose it bc at and after school I don’t feel like eating

  • Excellent presentation Dr. Freilich! Hopefully more people will stumble on this well researched, intelligent and hope giving video.

  • Maybe no one mentioned it, and maybe you see it differently, but in my opinion you look way better on the After picture. In the Before picture you look unhealthy skinny. At least in After one, after weight gain, you’ve lovely curves in all the right places.

  • Yes, I too am guilty of jumping from weight loss plan to others as well, I do believe that I need to have tried every single weight-loss system that was available, however in the end not one of them made it easier for me to shed and maintain the weight off. I ended up trying for the very last time using the Custokebon Secrets simply because my cooworker who told me awesome things about it and so far to date I’ve effectively lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks!

  • I just wanna point out something, I think u still need to exercise to help u lose weight, cuz if u do that, u r not just losing weight, ur also turning those fat into muscles… Just remind me if I’m wrong

  • thanks for your video. let me share my experience of exercise. it not only helped me loose weight but also helped me cope with anxiety and depression. please do not quit exercise

  • I’ve eaten Olanzapine for 15 years now. In the beginning I had severe anorexia and the meds didn’t effect me at all. The latest years, now when I’m around 30, I’ve gained up to BMI 22, and I feel SO ASHAMED of it! I’m “recovered” from my ED, but I don’t want to weight more than I absolutely have to, and I desperately want to lose weight, but “can’t” stay away from chocolate because I’m always craving it. What should I do?? These extra 6 kilos are killing me! Every time I stop Olanzapine I have a mixed bipolar episode, so I need it.

  • I love your videos! I just like to ask how do you maintain friendships, i’m so paranoid I can’t trust anyone… it is very lonely, I feel like an alien

  • I’ve been trying to lose weight for atleast a year and a half now, I started as 130ish and I am now 145ish, then again I am a 14 year old girl so I know I’m growing, but honestly I just want to lose the excess fat. I have been working out 4-5 times every day, and eating about 1,700 cals every day, I just… don’t know what to do.

  • Dr. Freilich-a question for you. In your opinion are HR based models of Fitbit more accurate at tracking calories burned than non-HR?

  • I don’t mean to be obtuse, however you seem to be contradicting the other gentleman in the TEDx Talk. What in specific do you not agree with? In his last 10 seconds he said, 1) eat less, 2) move more, 3) keep breathing. Do you disagree with this? He specifically said that “breathing more” isn’t feasible as that leads to hyperventilation. As smart as you both are, you both did not depict the absolute fastest way to lose weight. I would argue the fastest way to lose 15 pounds is to cut your arm off.

  • Your videos are helping me to better understand my friend who is living with schizophrenia, right now I have had to take a break from him as he has relapsed and I can’t have him in my life but i am here for him when he comes back to the program. He truly is a wonderful man and friend when he is living well with schizophrenia and I really miss his friendship. Thank you for helping better understand what it is like to live with this mental illness.

  • Fairly recently I changed my anti anxiety meds, and I have gone from 125 to 205… in not a large period of time. I had to buy new clothes every 2 weeks. Today, I’m speaking to my doctor. Thank you for this. I know what you mean about feeling so dark. It makes me feel like none of the medications work… I have chronic pain, and so weight gain went to my breasts so back pain is terrible.

  • It took me 11 months months to lose 40 pounds and I still have 60 pounds to lose I’m frustrated but I’m glad I’m still lost some weight

  • Your videos are awesome, thanks for putting this information out there! I’m a medical researcher in the field of antipsychotic drug side effects and we’re working on medications to help with this huge problem.

  • As a physician, I came to this video for educational reasons, but I am leaving with more than education! I feel personally motivated as well after watching this.

  • First if you’re trying to lose weight you need to be motivated and you cant just think “you need to lose weight” you have to act on it. Drink water a lot and try to never drink any soda

  • Can you do a video on how to deal with negative symptoms like lack of interest, reduced feelings (also not being able to feel happy) and thus limited expressions that stay when on meds? I am currently struggling with that and feel kinda sad about it..

  • Please, dont do the step at 3:10,this will cause the food to rot inside your stomach without digestion which may lead to serious problems

  • Im crying out here because my mom believes that exercise means weight loss, but its a freaking diet

  • It’s not. At all.

Figure your body’s BMR then cut about 500 calories from that figure whilst adding daily exercise.

It’s easy honestly. The thing that’s difficult for people is not being lazy and going to the gym, and stop cheating and eating that piece of cake.

You have a daily budget of calories you can spend. Use them wisely on nutritious food that fills you.

Calories in. Calories out. That’s all that matters. Losing weight, physically, is extremely easy.

  • Thank you so much for being the first time Ive ever heard encouragement and not judgment about this subject. Even from mental health pros, they just dont get how hard it really is. Youre such an inspiration!

  • i dont know about you guys but i just built a time machine and just fly back to high school. so NOW every time i reach 280 pounds i just jump in my Delorean, press a few buttons and then BOOM!!! 159 pounds.

  • Our weight loss group asks if it possible for you to do a VIDEO covering AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES and medical weight loss options. Lupus, Myasthenia Gravis, Hypothyroidism, Crohns and fibro are affecting our group and I am sure many that view your videos. Thank you again Dr. for sharimg your knowledge (Sorry for the caps they wanted the request to stand out!)

  • I wish she would say which meds she was on. I became allergic to my low weigh gain med after 7 years. Now they were afraid to try any in that class and I’m on a high weight gain and I’m gaining like crazy and a zombie.

  • Changing from Olanzapine to Quetiapine helped a lot with this for me. I told my psychiatrist that I was putting lots of weight and he changed my meds.

  • Diet & exercise, be all & end all… yawn. You are extremely thin and I wonder whether weight gain has ever even been a problem for you… “OMG! I gained 5 pounds!”??? Or perhaps you manage it via eating disorders??? If you’re speaking to we sufferers as a non-fat empath, I thank you.

I started Ability recently and gained 10 pounds in 3 days without eating more food or fattening food. There is no magic cure for this. I want to stay sane and be fat.

But please don’t ask for donations for hopeless new age wishfull thinking.
Thank you for your efforts though,
    A.Z.

  • My question: If a person is additcted to food and is obese would the best choice be gastric sleeve vs medication because of the exsisting dangers of high BMI, blood pressure, diabetes, and autoimmune disease (MG)? Thank you Dr. for caring and sharing! Please continue to educate and uplift. I will do my part and share the videos too! Unfortunately there are far to many Docs in the weight loss business as a opportunity to make quick money instead of helping their Pt gain long lasting results. You will continue to be sought after for your expertise and passion on weight loss alone.

  • Hi lauren, please reply me…when doctors findout about your disease, how many months passed after finding out that you hace schizophrenia….please tell me….

  • I feel very jealous of those people who are able to eat everything and anything but stay thin. Like my youngest brother lives off of pop tarts, sodas, & candy but is still the thinnest In the family.

  • I gained 12kg (26 pounds) in about a month…from 68kg to 80 kg(but lost some since*) but Im an average man tho so my state of mind actually improved lol
