Weird Ways to Burn 200 Calories

Video taken from the channel: AsapSCIENCE

Hypothetically speaking, it’s entirely feasible that a person could adapt this habit to lose weight. If a person had 300 calories burned fidgeting per day, that would be 109,500 extra calories burned in one year. Assuming that the person did not consume any extra calories to cancel out the deficit, that would be a whopping 31.2 pounds lost!

According to Dr. James A. Levine from the Mayo Clinic who authored a study on fidgeting, those extra movements add up to as much as 350 extra calories burned a day, the equivalent of a 30-minute jog. That extra 350 calories can really add up an. Children are often told off for fidgeting—but a study involving the University of Strathclyde has found that it could help them to use up energy amounting to nearly 3kg body weight a year. The important point of this is that you could easily burn 100 calories more per day than you currently do.

For instance, a 150-pound person burns 100 calories in just walking a mile, and a heavier person burns more. Fidgeting and pacing help, too. All you need to do is figure out how to become “inefficient” in your day. Most definitely. In a seated position, the volunteers burned over 3.5% more calories than lying down and a massive 54% more calories when they fidgeted.

When stood still they only burned 13% more than lying down. But add in fidgeting and that went up to a huge 154% more calories burned. At the very least, fidget anytime you’re sitting down and you’ll burn more calories. The math: For a 175 pound person, every 10 minutes of slow walking or pacing while doing something equates to burning approximately 20-30 more calories than if you sat down doing, the same activity. For those who want to lose weight while fidgeting, help yourself with these tips: Fidget all day.

In a post by Washington Post, researchers have found fidgeting is vital in burning at least 350 calories a day. Imagine the results if you regularly fidget for a whole year! Fidget with different body parts and when your situation permits it. There is a wide variation in how many calories people burned.

For some, fidgeting while standing burned almost 200% more calories over baseline. For others, they actually burned more calories while sitting than they did while standing. One person burned the same number of calories standing motionless as they did fidgeting while sitting. Well, it turns out fidgeting while sitting or standing actually increases the amount of calories you burn by 29% and 38% respectively (as compared to lying still).

Consequently, it. This calculator calculates an estimate of the number of calories burned in various activities. Simply put in your weight and the duration of your exercise and click the calculate button.

  • I just ate 2 packs of cookies…
    And here i am….feeling guilty
Watching this video makes me wonder if feeling guilty for 10 min straight before i crack open another pack wud be enough to burn 200 calories….
HEY A PERSON CAN HOPE,OR IS IT WISHFUL THINKING

  • If you want to lose weight, follow these steps.
    1. NO ARTIFICIAL SUGAR, that shit is the biggest factor to weight gain.
    2. Eat low fat foods, things like homemade marinaded chicken, or ham have low fat and high protein.
    3. Water, nothing else needs to be saID. Although a small cup of milk every day is also recommended (milk contains sugar, but it also has the calcium that your bones need)
    4. Try to eat roughly 2000 calories worth of grains, veggies, fruits, and proteins.
    5. Natural sugar like that found in nonprocessed fruits and veggies are what should be keeping you energized.
    6. Exercise. Do about 10 push-ups and sit ups every morning as you wake up, and another set of 10 as you’re about to go to sleep.
    7. Ignore criticisms, that shit will only beat you down.
    8. Try a sport you’ve been to afraid to try. This can help boost confidence, something that ties into weight loss greatly
    9. Don’t cheat. Yes, I know that bag of Cool Ranch Doritos is temping, but you CAN NOT have it.

  • This is one of the best diet system i ever used before! In this diet system i lost 53 kg in just 2 weeks! i hope you will try this diet system and loss weight fast in just 2 weeks! for more info about the diet system click here: https://lp.vp4.me/8bhs

  • This video has good advice, but I’m not sure about the best diet plan that I should work with, only because I have never used any. Anybody tried using the Custokebon Secrets? I have noticed several folks mention extraordinary things about Custokebon Secrets.

  • You burn about 1500-1800 calories doing nothing per day
This doesn’t mean you should eat this little, but if you were in a coma, you can’t go below this amount

  • Actually according to weight everyone has a different amount of water they should drink just don’t drink over 33oz of water an hour since it’s not recommended as you could overdue the water in a short amount of time

  • Just eat like a cave man. All natural food, like meat, fish, fruits, and veggies. Stay away from sauce, sodas, sweets. Then run like your life depends on it. I lost 25 pounds. If I can do it, you can do it too!

  • Good video, with a lot of useful info. But you got a few facts wrong… The body does NOT see all calories equally! If you consume a meal containing different sources of energy, i.e. Carbs, fat and alcohol, the body will prioritise the use of alcohol then the carbs and finally the the fat! Why?? Because you can’t store energy from alcohol, as for the carbs, you can store them and you will, just not as much as fat because polymerising sugar is way less efficient the storing fat. In conclusion, if you stuff your body with these and go over the limit of what your body consumes in a day you are more likely to store fat than anything else.

“But the only-junk.food guy lost weight eating crap! How do you explain that?” Well, he lost weight all right… But was it just fat? Muscle mass? Bone mass?
    Weight isn’t just weight people…

Another interesting fact, not all carbs are treated the same! Some take longer to be “pushed out” from the blood stream into the cells by the insulin, on the other hand you have some that do it faster! You want the “slower ones” during the active part of you day because you will feel less peckish…

  • In the quest to clarify varying responses to overfeeding, and even Calorie deficits, have you researched the role of brown adipose tissue, and sympathetic responses to overfeeding? It is putated some people burn off excessive Calories by a sympathetic nerve response, similar to women who have hot flushes such as during menopause. Many people will be familiar with their body getting very hot after eating a large meal.

At the end of the day, I think people also have to accept how sedentary they are, and eat accordingly, rather than eat as their more active forebears ate.

  • videos like this offer advice that’s perfectly valid if all you need to lose is a few pounds or around 20 or 30 total or want to get in better shape. but things get way complicated in a hurry if you’re 100 or more pounds overweight. simple diet and exercise won’t cut it. it’s now a medical disease that needs something more drastic to intervene

  • You can eat anything you want! Just stay under your calories. You can have 2000 kcal of pizza as long as you dont have anything else

  • No, sleeping for 3 hours isn’t as valuable as running for 20 minutes. If you choose to take the sleeping route, you will be losing muscle mass as well. Might get skinny, but you will be very very weak and incapable of defending yourself.

  • Hi… Wow Thank you, Three months later I lost 34 pounds and 3 sizes, just following this system: http://leanbellybreakthrough1.club/lose-weight-in-2weeks
Since I turned 40 it has been increasing harder to lose weight. I have tried every diet, watch what I ate etc., nothing worked. One day my husband came home and told me about this system, I thought why not. Three months later I lost 34 pounds and 3 sizes…

  • Hi Andrew, very interesting video.:) When people say excess calories are just dissipated as heat I’m always skeptical because my excess calories are certainly not dissipated as heat! Every time I eat just a liiiiiitle too much, BOOM I put on weight!! A lot of it and really fast. What you said about NEAT is really interesting to me. I have noticed that a lot of people are kinda nervous, they’re always fidgeting, moving, gesturing, scratching themselves, talking with their hands, walking around, getting up, etc. while I seem to be very calm and don’t move much in that way. When I do move, it means something, and if not, I don’t move at all. I also recently purchased an activity tracker and saw that I don’t get many steps in, unless I do something specific or intentionally go walk. But I don’t walk around unnecessarily, ever. I seem to be very economic in terms of movement. 😉 Now I’m wondering if that’s why I gain weight so easily as soon as I eat a little too much.

  • NEAT is not just the action of fidgeting, it is any non-exercise movement, such as walking to meetings, doing housework, ironing, washing the dog, etc. Chewing gum was shown to expend 20 calories/hour, so depending upon fidgeting for weight loss may well be optimistic.
What Levine’s research interestingly also showed that people who were overfed, naturally and subconsciously increased their NEAT expenditure (i.e. walked more over the day throughout the study). He also showed that obese people expended more NEAT energy than their lean counterparts, due to the extra weight being moved.
What I’d really like to see now, is the connection between body content of brown fat (known for thermogenesis) and NEAT expenditure, which is thankfully being researched right now. Stay tuned.

  • It is not simply calories in and calories out. It’s a hormone issue. There are skinny people who eat a lot less calories who have to inject with insulin due to diabetes and they get fat where the injection site is. Also try eating a measly 1500 calories for 6 months on nothing but candy. Watch what happens.

  • Thanks for sharing this information. “Calories” has been the biggest obstacle since making lots of changes in my life 3 years ago. Meaning I was always doing my best to make sure to eat enough. It never caused me much more than a tiny bit of stress. More annoying than anything.

During the very initial changes of my food intake I experience 2 full weeks where all I ate was a large salad and a green powders drink (which was free from a relative) No changes evident.

This past summer I was working 30hrs/wk outside, exposed to the sun. I was eating 4-5+K calories everyday. and drinking almost 2 gallons of water.

The past few months I have been working 15hrs/wk and barely any outside time at all. I have been eating 2800-3200.

My weight has been stable between 145-135, the entire time.* *After an initial drop from 160 to 125; this drop happened extremely rapidly after changing to what I was eating at the time, raw fruits and salads.

  • Pls, can we have a re-upload of this vid? With more crazy ideas and fun stuff pls.

    Somethings u could include:

run up & down the stairs
    spin around for 15 min
jump on a trampoline 300 times

  • Shit. I watched this like 3 weeks ago and I’ve lost like 15 pounds. It’s kind of ridiculously easy to lose weight. I wish I knew this stuff a couple years ago.

  • Coach, 300kcal in 1:00 ridding a bike, 1 am 1,78cm 64kg. Can I count it like NEAT? I need to ride a bike or walk at least 1:30/ 2:00 ours days, just for moving my self…

  • ive been writing the word calories for about an hour now and its starting to look like some kind of super scientific word that no one knows the meaning to

  • I don’t know if it’s the lighting or the camera or what it is, but your eyes absolutely jump out in this video. It’s really very nice.

  • Can you kindly provide me with a scientific research paper to substantiate all of the claims related to calorie-burning in this video?

  • There are several problems with the 12 monozygotic twin study by Bouchard and thus this study can only really serve as a pilot for a larger and valid experiment, and finite conclusions can really not be drawn from this study:
    1. All men were lean (lean body-mass index at the start of the study was 19.7) would the pattern of gain be the same in obese subjects or just higher BMI subjects?
    2. Five pairs of men were smokers and whilst they were not permitted to smoke, did so lightly. This adds another variability to the study and I question how one can consider the results with half of the participants being exposed to smoking throughout the study (smoking has an effect on resting BMR and enhances physical activity: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1559911)
    3. The exercise was measured in time, not distance Each man walked 30 minutes per day, but the distance covered would determine the caloric expenditure, not time. A leisurely walk will burn different calories to one which is brisk (especially for those under the influence of nicotine).
    4. Subjects were born and reared in the 70’s, where the physical and social environments were substantially different than they are now (BMI’s are greater and obesity levels higher; environments also quite different)
    5. Bouchard based his determination of monozygoticity on the sharing of identical HLA alleles this in fact is erroneous.  Heterozygotic twins can also share such alleles. The sharing of one placenta would have been the desired method to determine monozygocity.
    6. A set of 12 twins, five of which were smokers, does not equate to statistically significant data.  A larger cohort is needed to make a relevant and direct correlation.

  • I find the subject you are talking about is very useful. BUT I think you go a little too fast. the neat stuff etc. is a bit confusing and required a little bit more explanations and exemples. also all these numbers, terminology and conclusions you provide without giving us any extra seconds to digest it all is overwhelming. finally, these visual chart with tons of information you provide is too full. At least, take a pencil to point on the visual part of the chart to synchronize it with the verbal part.

  • I notice a lot of people keep on speaking about Fenoboci Diet Plan (just search it on google). But I’m not sure if it is good. Have you ever tried this popular weight loss secrets?

  • The one thing that I would add to this is that Fructose (mainly from sugar) is a liver toxin and triggers fat buildup in and around the belly faster than in the rest of the body. So if you want to trim belly fat specifically, begin by reducing sugar intake. This will usually also reduce the total calorie consumption, because sugar has a high calorie content.

The moment I began this program I`ve started to see a significant difference. Now, 5 days later, it`s like a miracle. My Hemorrhoids have fully gone from my entire life!

  • Hi, Andrew, I’ve got a question for you.  There was a something I read one time not sure where I read it that seems to go with things you’ve said before about metabolism.  It talked about how metabolism doesn’t get slower or faster due to what you eat, but instead how much overall muscle there is on the body.  So it’s saying the more muscle people have the faster their metabolism will be.  To be honest, I’ve had this happen personally, where by diet stayed the same but my job changed and until I adjusted to the different schedule didn’t have time to stretch or do strength training or anything.  And I noticed that my metabolism was slower a little until I got back into my routines.I haven’t come across any videos to my knowledge from you specifically talking about how the percentage of muscle on the body can affect metabolism.  Have you done a video about this already?

  • Do anybody know about Custokebon Secrets? Does it work? I hear lots of people lost their weight with this popular lose weight secrets.

  • Hi Andrew, i really love your videos and recommend them to my friends a lot. I just wanted to add my opinion on something regarding the videos themselves, not the subjects discussed in them. That is specifically the fact that you dont look at the camera in your videos. I really wish you would… Either way, good work as always!

  • This is exactly what I think Freelee ignores. No, I can’t “smash” in the calories like she does because I’m a lower energy kind of person and rarely fidget or move!

  • hi Andrew, I’ve recently purchased the weightloss and vitality ebook, but it was deleted from my computer, I sent you an email from your Web site, I would really love to be able to get it back, it’s a great book, I can give you my info, so you can verify that I did infact purchase the book.
    Thanks for your time.

  • You were wrong about ‘are all calories the same, no matter where they come from’. Junk food is filled with antibiotics and additives that’ll affect your intestinal flora. There’s hundreds of billions of bacteria in your gut responsible for your food digestion, absorption and satisfaction. Plus, a deficit in protein will reduce your lean mass which will decrease your amount of muscle therefore decreasing your basal metabolic rate. Don’t starve yourself, eat healthy balanced diet and it is tough to adjust in the beginning but it gets easier every week.

  • Do anyone know about Custokebon Secrets? Does it work? I hear many people lost their weight with this popular lose weight methods.

  • This is a good summary video of weight loss via calorie deficit, but i find it disturbing that it was highlighted that no matter what food you take (protein, carbohydrates or fats), “your body does not care if it is a 100g or protein / fats”. That is obviously wrong.

If I am a beginner, learning about how my body process food, i’ll take your word for it and do damages to my body.

In fact, your body DOES care where the calories comes from. That is why there is so many people focusing on either reducing sugar, or reducing their intake of carbohydrates/fat.

I do feel that this should be properly addressed and not simply on the basis of ‘calories counting worked wonders’. This may not be the focus of the video but you are telling people that they can lose weight by eating junk food, without telling them about the consequences!

  • I honestly don’t understand why so many people are in denial about CICO (Calories In, Calories Out) Every single diet that actually works depends upon it. There isn’t a diet that works that requires you to eat more calories than your TDEE.

  • I agreed with everything said here other than “reward yourself if you lose 10 lbs a month” you should NOT be losing more than 2 lbs per week, which would only amount to maybe 8 lbs. Be careful what you are telling people to do.

  • min 7:45 is not true to sience anymore.
you actually can loose more belly fat than overall body fat if you train your just your belly

  • The macronutrients are not metabolized the same. It is not simple physics of calories in /calories out. Fat metabolism is regulated by hormones I.e. Insulin. Do your research before spouting this nonsense.

  • I’m 457.8 pounds and I’m fo up ng keto along with being in a calorie deficit. I’ve lost weight so far and I’m going to keep on doing both along with only eating when hungry.

  • You’ve done a lot of videos on the scientific aspects of diet, whether through studies or experiments you’ve done…do you ever plan on writing a book(s) to cover many of these topics, including ones you’ve not covered through Youtube? I enjoy your videos immensely. I look forward to your next. THUMB UP as usual.

  • you’d think that with a smart guy, and a common problem, there would be upon the hundreds of thousands of views and at the time of watching is only 43k? what’s wrong with this picture, I’m looking at you America.

  • Your videos are usually really good. But this is super-oversimplified nonsense. Of course there’s a correlation, but it’s not that simple!

  • “your body doesn’t care where your calories come from” what a load of crap. Obesity more than a calories thing is about hormonal disbalance. you need to low your insuline, your cortisol levels. you need to rise your growth hormone, leptin, etc… thinking that 500 calories of donuts have the same effect on your body that 500 calories of chicken breast and broccoli is beyond stupid…

  • Just argue with your brother and start fighting for that last chocolate bar and you’ll end up exhausted and then you’ll cry and fall asleep..

    Extra work EXTRA BURNED CALORIES

  • You should’ve mentioned that eating “high amounts” of carbs or protein causes insulin spike, which leds to a decrease metabolism/body burns fat at a much lower rate. And all BMR calculators are different or just give a estimate as all bodies have different metabolisms. Its important to keep track of your body either by taking naked pictures often or paying attention if your old clothes start feeling less tight.

  • you seriously need to do better research. read 4hr Body for at least some better basic info. it is not a calorie math problem. actual nutritionists know this because the math actually doesn’t work out. calories in are not calories out. it does matter which foods you eat. having a whole day of eating pizza versus veggies, with equal calories of each, causes different biological reactions and consequences. and one guy doing one diet for a small time is not a valid experiment and shows literally no veifiable information. this is pop science and pop science helps no one except the person selling the pop science.

  • I see a lot of people hating on this video, but did anyone actually try it? Its actually been working for me really well… Hard to believe counting calories doesn’t work cause I started doing it about 3 weeks ago and I’ve lost around 15 pounds already.. I also feel way better most days compared to before. I’m hungry a lot sometimes but I just will power through it and use an app to count calories in meals ahead of time so I know what to expect. it’s easier to hold out on eating when you have a plan. The app also shows macronutrients and other stuff and in order to feel full while eating fewer calories you have eat healthier anyway, so it’s been really simple for me.

  • Anyone know what is Custokebon Secrets about? I hear lots of people lost crazy amounts of weight with Custokebon Secrets (do a search on google).

  • Props to everyone that is here trying to maintain their bodies. You have my wishes, its going to be a journey, but with persistence, What you want will come soon enough.

  • WRONG you have the units wrong. Please fix your video. It is true you have the definition correct. however the “calories” you are speaking of when addressing Macros are in KILO-CALORIES. Meaning that the Calorie amount you find on your food is and should actually be labeled Kilo-calories instead of “Calories”. Now the Calories you are talking about in your Definition should be stated as the mount of energy required to elevate One Liter of water by 1 degree Celsius; which equals 1000 Calories or 1 Kilo-calorie.

  • I eat like 40% protein daily, 130 grams or so when my macros are recommended to be 78 or so, is this OK? im on a caloric defecit and protein fills me up

  • Chew gum 18 hours
    Apply balm 1500 times
    Brush teeth 45 times
    1 hour of surfing
    8 glasses of water
    2.5 hours surfing
    Sing 25 times
    4,800 word essay
    10 minutes of jumping jacks

  • I’ve never been able to do that before in my life. I’m down just over 12lbs in 2 weeks, following this weight loss program: the2weekdietnow.com/lose-weight-fast
and for once in my life, I truly believe in myself. I don’t know that I ever did before, at least not without someone else to reassure me of it.
I’m happy to say that my outlook on life has changed drastically. Every day it seems to get a little easier to stay positive and to love and live for myself.

  • just so everyone knows starving yourself or puking food out does temporarily make you skinnier, but if you start to eat a normal amount, you will actually gain more fat due to your body expecting another starving cycle.

  • dude you’ve way over simplified this… it matters where you get your calories from. you can’t eat 2000 calories worth of chocolate bars a day and expect to lose weight. what people need to do is cut as much sugar out of their diet as possible, eat like your grandparents would have 50 years ago.

  • This is not correct. Calorie is not a calorie. Check out for example how fructose without fiber is digested. It’s absolutely different story, than you are telling.

  • Complete bullshit, it has nothing to do with calories. You think people are fat today because they eat too much butter? No, it is a hormonal problem to do with insulin, aka sugar. People are not physics machines, “calories in, calories out” is pseudoscience.

  • This shows an ignorance of basic biology. proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids (fats) all perform different tasks in the body and so it is important what you eatproteins perform most of the work so to not eat them does not help you lose weight, at least in a different way. They are all stored differently and it is far from “rare” that your muscle gets used for energy. This is a common problem for people who do not work out the right way.

  • No… Your body does care were the calories come from. Eating a lot of processed fats, processed sugars and fast-digestive carbohydrates spark insulin levels high and fast, which signals your body to store fat(And there are many other factors as well that influence body fat). Yes, you can lose weight by simply counting calories, hell I’ve lost 10kg, without any exercise, that way but guess what? That weight I lost was a lot of muscle weight and not so much body fat. The body fat is really what counts and what makes a difference, which is lost by exercise and eating the right foods at the right time.

  • A buddy of mine found the actual “sowo hope site” on Google. She dropped 16 pounds in just a several days. We are trying this diet now and also the results so far have been far beyond my wildest dreams. It comes tremendously suggested. You can find this on Google.

  • Okay that’s stupid and simple, not wrong but not at 100% true. Of course you will loose Weight, but is it a sustainable lost? Is it sustainable for your body if don’t look at what type of calories you eat, so imagine if you always eat the same? No your body need all types of calories, because food is not only calories but it is more that’s why when you say ” your body dosn’t carr what type of calories you eat” that’s WRONG!

  • This is a very interesting topic that I have always been personally curious about. It seems there are so many considerations. How about a fidgety, anxious individual, standing outside on a winters day!? haha, that’s me lately, and it feels like my body really rips through calories.

  • Hi Jennifer. I myself am a volleyball player. I have quite the experience in exercise. I have never actually paid attention on my calorie intake or my diet. I can safely say my diet is terrible. I snack so much it’s terrible. Your channel is really interesting and I will pay more attention to what I eat.
