  • Yup today Is my rest day… at first It’s difficult to skip the gym as I thought I want see a quick progress of my training. The diet and rest pattern which are actually my issue on gaining progress. I sleep just several hours due to my insomnia and the worst, not even sleep.

  • I really wish I knew this back in College. I played college hockey and had practice late at night 4 times a week with our practices usually starting after 9 P.M. I would workout a few times a week in the gym and before every practice we would do a 30 minute team workout before getting ready to go on the ice. Then 2 games on the weekend. I would get 3 to 5 sinus infections every year I was in college and was constantly taking antibiotics and pseudophedrine to get through classes and practice.   • Thanks for being straight up. I’ve seen a handful of well renowned research not in virology or infectious diseases, come out with bold statements, some that are simply not true. The whole point is that we don’t have something that makes you immune, that’s called a vaccine. And if we had something to fight infectious diseases, e.g. vitamin C, why the hell wouldn’t we be doing it already…

  • Dude, you just explained my auto-immune disease. I instinctivly stopped training so much. My white blood cells have targeted my skin giving me hyves (urticaria) I am struggleing with this for about 2 years. I have been training crossfit for many times a week and the coach did not even say stuff like you need rest days because every day is a different training. Now I am stuck with this disease.   • I have an inquiry to:
    -can you make a video on how exercise helps our immune system. Certain people have a notion that when we exercise intensely (maybe moderately) enough to sweat, the heat generated kills off any pathogens & the likes. I feel it’s an exaggeration, so it’s not entirely wrong.

  • could someone help me solve this mystery. basically i’ve lived with high stress levels since i was 13 due to crippling social anxiety and i’m now 37. one thing that has caused me issues is that i started to get strange aches and sensitivity to the cold like i have a fever. i have had it really bad out of the blue where i get feelings of extreme restlessness around my limbs and especially my torso. i usually get it recently when i try to improve my diet and power walk a lot. sometimes straight after or a day after. it normally starts with lower back pain/soreness, aches right on the outside of my thighs and around the abdomen. there is also restlessness in the muscles and mild stabbing pains which sometimes feel like they come from the bone and also my wrists. i would really like to solve this mystery as i’ve had it for around 15 years.

  • Playing a sport you like is best for cardio Hr at most. Weight Train no more than an 45min to an hour.. best strive for 30 min non stop w/ 30 sec. breaks between workouts… every other day. On your days off.. do yoga, stretching or light cardio. And like always.. What you eat will determine all your goals no matter what they are.

  • Excellent video. I’ve cut back on anaerobic exercise and increased moderate activity with many positive health benefits. My gums are healthier, colds are infrequent and skin rashes/rosacea has lessened and an arrhythmia has disappeared. You can do something like crossfit or marathon training for ego or a more moderate program for your health. Kudos

  • As a former athlete….Overtraining, happened to me two times….when it happened the first time…and I overcame it…I said to myself that IT WOULD never happened to me again….and 5 years later it happened to me again….but that time it was much, much, worse….I also developed adrenal fatigue….well today according to Dr Carrie Jones, it is not adrenal fatigue but a “cortisol shift phenomenon”, where the cortisol production cycle shifts from morning to evening, which makes it hard to fall asleep; and hard to keep awake during the early mornings…. Anyway I overcame it after 1 year of complete REST….no exercising…..
    Yes I agree, it takes a LOT OF ENERGY, from the system….I used to feel ALWAYS TIRED, even when I would wake up from a 9 hour sleep….
    Yes, I agree too, LESS is MORE….and MORE is LESS…..now my workouts are very short but hard, and NOT LONG….a more quality than quantity workout routine…

  • I remember learning about antibodies when I was like seven years old. I cannot believe I forget such basic information over time. To keep this very basic information about the immune system alive in my memory I will make a note here.

    Antibodies are proteins produced to the body to destroy invading cells. They are due to the work of B and T Cells. B and T Cells identify antigens they can use that information so that they can swiftly respond and deploy antibodies when a threat revisits. That is how the human body can develop immunity to certain diseases, like chickenpox.

    Autoimmune diseases trick the body into attacking their own cells.

  • Back in the 90s I participated in competitive cycling for most of the decade. I engaged in regular training at a very intense level sometimes for several hours several times a week. In that time I experienced an interesting immune response that I learned to take advantage of. If I came down with the flue or a cold. I would wait till the illness was just past its peak. Usually about the second full day of illness. I would then go out on a 2 to 3 hour ride of moderate to medium intensity. At the beginning of the ride I would still have some symptoms including mild fever and some respiratory congestion. Constantly, by the time I finish the ride I would have no symptoms at all and felt fantastic. I did this consistently throughout my time as a competitive cyclist and it NEVER failed me. These days I do moderate to medium effort walking and powerwalking instead of cycling. I exercise normally between 45 min to an hour and 20 min at a time. Since walking for 5 years, I have not been sick once.

  • Thank you for this video. Right on time. This is happening to me. I had blood work which showed my uric acid is low. I have been experiencing a lot of muscle and joint pain. Increase fatigue. I thought it was due to winter time long nights and just pure cold. She instructed I take gluthione. I told her I’m taking already. I researched and realized I need to increase to twice a day instead of only once a day. Will do this for next month and see if improvement occurs. I will also decrease my training to 4 days a week for a month. Thank you again

  • Dr. Layne, we are in sync without content. Yesterday I was talking about natural ways to protect from the virus… and some to stop it in the early stages. Breathing garlic was one. It’s worth a try.

  • I think this was clear.

    You should be constant on a moderate intensity exercise, rather than being a 1-day-per-week-“athlete” who wants to burn everything got in six days of trash food and sedentary lifestyle. Moreover, you whould not try to compensate a bad nutrition with prolonged hours of workout.
    Be smart. Eat healthy and go to the gym for overtime progression and maintenance.

    However, on the other extreme, we have sport competitions. I think everyone interested in competitions should know that there is other reasons outside “health lifestyle” for competitions, e.g.: money, trophy, medals, podium, fame, addiction, fun etc.
    It is the risk reward ratio. You get exposed. You know it. It may be immunesupression, it may be a fracture, or a torn ligament.

  • The control group from the study was in a race. Competition is very stressful. I don’t think the control group represents most people. There is good stress and bad stress. Competition presents a mental component that is a whole different ball game than from someone working out or practicing a fitness routine for fun.

  • I just started back at the gym and had only been going for a month now. In the first 3 weeks I realized I over trained too much because I’ve been sick this past week pretty bad.   • Constant overtrainer since I was 14, now 42 and with at least one diagnosed auto-immune illness (which I am handling).

  • I am a server in a very large restaurant and omggg it’s so hard because I want to have enough energy to work (more if I can!), train, exercise for fun like surfing, and be able to sing—— all of which takes a lot of energy! And I also just turned 31 (!!) and I’m trying to be well rested! It’s a struggle! I’d like to find a different job but the only way to do that is to hustle even harder to dig myself out of this lifestyle I feel like a juggler sometimes. Definitely exhausted most days. Sleep eat work repeat is a sad but true reality just to pay the rent a lot of the time. Surf? No I wish.

  • Wjhile most of the stuff he says in the video is really helpful(and perhaps urgent). Major porion of this videos felt off to me. Especially the part at the begining when he said, “immune system is supressed” while later he explained that, what actually OT(over training) caused that, “It boosted the sub types of immune system”.     So I went out of my way and looked through couple of reputated studies mentioned on the links.
    While the NCBI shows believable evidences that overtraining degrades immune system(along with other physiological systems). The Iranian study at 5:30 was done on “wistar rats” and not on the humans by the way. Nontheless the studied said the same thing as told on vid.

    Also, one more thing that NCBI studies indicated that illnesses coming from EE(Execessive exercise) are not particularly because of the immunosupression. But actually the altered focus of immune system.

    I’m not really trying to point out fingers, and his job on the video was really commendable that drew necessary attention. But the facts were not that vivid.(Perhaps to make the vid more of a crisp ig)

  • Excellent video, I trained like crazy in my teens and early twenties, and the time I was 26 I had an autoimmune thyroid disorder. I thought maybe the thyroid condition was hereditary, but this may have been the culprit as I took lots of pre-work out mixes then to boost my work outs.

  • Exercise is needed to get circulation and increase breathing, but I totally agree overtraining can be harmful. A lot of guys overtrain to get stronger, but also for a better physique, and to increase muscle mass. Could you make a video about how to exercise to get stronger, but not that it causes the effects of overtraining?

    Also would implementing long duration, steady state cardio mitigate the effects of overtraining especially when paired with coffee and fasting?

  • I do cardio workout including 20 minutes of running and 7 minutes of cycling and some stretching workout. I was 94.3 kgs when joined the gym and now i am 92.4 kgs.   • I realized today I was overtraining and I’ve been feeling nauseous all day because I pushed myself a bit harder the past couple of weeks and ab day this week. It hurts when I take deep breaths, laugh, pee, get up from sitting or laying down, etc. I also did a dumb thing and tried fasting for a longer period of time compared to my usual 12 hour fasts. I fasted for 18 hours AND after I had only eaten 2 meals which both equaled to 500 calories total (not each).

    Don’t be dumb like me, PLEASE! I don’t care how down you feel about yourself or how much you want to change with your body. Be patient because you will get your results and hurting yourself and pushing yourself too hard like I did won’t help you, it’ll make things worse and it’s not worth it.

    Listen to your body when it wants to stop doing something. I’m openly admitting my stupidity because hopefully someone out there won’t make the same mistakes and isn’t missing a day from work because they were busy puking from ab and hunger pains.

    Take your time. You will get there.

I have been known to push myself too far when it comes to training, 6 times/week at least 1 hour long workouts, consisting of both cardio and heavy weightlifting, and boy oh boy has my body been suffering. My allergies have been horrible, and I have even had problems with my thyroid…whops. I really need to lower my training intensity.
