Over-training vs. the Immune System | Is Your Exercise Routine Making You Sick?

Video taken from the channel: Thomas DeLauer

Exercise is key for a healthy immune system. For many people with cancer, it’s also safe. Talk to your doctor about how much and what kind is best for you. Work out to beat bugs. Most people know about the benefits of exercise for our hearts, waistlines, muscles and bones.

Fewer are aware of how it supports our immune defences, especially as. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these: Don’t smoke. Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables. Exercise regularly.

Maintain a healthy weight. If you drink alcoho. Exercise causes change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC).

WBCs are the body’s immune system cells that fight disease. These antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they could detect illnesses earlier than they might have before. However, no one knows whether these changes help prevent infections.

Your immune system defends you against the viruses that cause colds and flu. These eight steps can help support your immune system so it’s ready to fight those viruses. Eat plenty of fruit. A regular yoga practice incorporating meditation can help support and strengthen the immune system. Ask a dozen sniffling, sneezing people to talk about the bug they’ve caught, and you’ll likely discover a pattern.

Chances are good that before they came down. A regular yoga practice incorporating meditation can help support and strengthen the immune system. Inside your body there is an amazing protection mechanism called the immune system. It is designed to defend you against millions of bacteria, microbes, viruses, toxins and parasites that would love to invade your body.To understand the power of the immune system, all that you have to do is look at what happens to anything once it dies. With PACE, your goal is to hit a peak of intensity in a short timeframe and then rest. You don’t have to do hours of cardio.

You only need to work 12 minutes a day. You work long enough to boost your immune system, but not so long that you suppress it. The adaptive immune system, which you develop when your body is exposed to microbes or chemicals released by microbes. These two immune systems work together. The innate immune system.

This is your child’s rapid response system. It patrols your child’s body and is the first to respond when it finds an invader. The innate immune system is. How to Keep Your Immune System Healthy & Happy.

Lucky for you, there are plenty of ways to help keep your immune system in prime working order on a daily basis. 4 Here’s a quick rundown of some of the best, immune-supporting habits and supplements. Healthy Habits for Immune Support.

  • Yup today Is my rest day… at first It’s difficult to skip the gym as I thought I want see a quick progress of my training. The diet and rest pattern which are actually my issue on gaining progress. I sleep just several hours due to my insomnia and the worst, not even sleep.

  • Is your immune system strong if your young because I’m 19 and my mom thinks my immune system is strong because I’m young do you think she’s right

  • Wrong, this is based on dated science: (over training is bad, elite training is good)

  • I work out two hours a day at the gym and I’m 56, I’ve got a bad virus now and get them afew times a year, is this because of the air con and germs in gym or my immune system can’t handle it?

  • Does he say there is no recovery from overtraining? Recording to the second study the group being in overtraining has the same pathological immune response as the group which has been in overtraining.

  • I really wish I knew this back in College. I played college hockey and had practice late at night 4 times a week with our practices usually starting after 9 P.M. I would workout a few times a week in the gym and before every practice we would do a 30 minute team workout before getting ready to go on the ice. Then 2 games on the weekend. I would get 3 to 5 sinus infections every year I was in college and was constantly taking antibiotics and pseudophedrine to get through classes and practice. This video was really eye opening to the fact that I was probably overdoing it and had no idea

  • Where is the athlete that over trains….

Then rest for an extended period of time….then goes back to moderate training?

    Is occasional over training good?

  • Thanks for being straight up. I’ve seen a handful of well renowned research not in virology or infectious diseases, come out with bold statements, some that are simply not true. The whole point is that we don’t have something that makes you immune, that’s called a vaccine. And if we had something to fight infectious diseases, e.g. vitamin C, why the hell wouldn’t we be doing it already…

  • Dude, you just explained my auto-immune disease. I instinctivly stopped training so much. My white blood cells have targeted my skin giving me hyves (urticaria) I am struggleing with this for about 2 years. I have been training crossfit for many times a week and the coach did not even say stuff like you need rest days because every day is a different training. Now I am stuck with this disease. How can I reverse the effect of making so much T2? because now I have skin attacks every day and it is driving me crazy….. btw the science is an important factor in this great you explain this! Thank you!!!

  • This was one of the best pieces of advice I received at the beginning of my weight training journey. I found it to be true. Diligence over time is where the results are at.

  • I have an inquiry to:
-can you make a video on how exercise helps our immune system. Certain people have a notion that when we exercise intensely (maybe moderately) enough to sweat, the heat generated kills off any pathogens & the likes. I feel it’s an exaggeration, so it’s not entirely wrong.
-secondly, does this video mean to imply that sickle cell patients have weaker immune systems? Or is there something else that makes them so vulnerable? I need to understand these things better.
    Thank you

  • could someone help me solve this mystery. basically i’ve lived with high stress levels since i was 13 due to crippling social anxiety and i’m now 37. one thing that has caused me issues is that i started to get strange aches and sensitivity to the cold like i have a fever. i have had it really bad out of the blue where i get feelings of extreme restlessness around my limbs and especially my torso. i usually get it recently when i try to improve my diet and power walk a lot. sometimes straight after or a day after. it normally starts with lower back pain/soreness, aches right on the outside of my thighs and around the abdomen. there is also restlessness in the muscles and mild stabbing pains which sometimes feel like they come from the bone and also my wrists. i would really like to solve this mystery as i’ve had it for around 15 years.

  • Exercise is to reduce and relieve stress which is the major factor of sickness an illness.. The exercise is necessary to eliminate toxins.. It’s the Recovery factor that makes you stronger an more resistance to sickness..

  • Was doing Keto last December and noticing amazing results before my eyes! But in January I contracted Pnemonia… (was totally fine after a week but it sucks) I do assume it was a result of the cold weather as well as vaping but I’m sure that weakened me more…

  • Taking the best from Dr Joel Fuhrman, Dr Michael Greger etc etc and pushing this even further…

Give this Facebook Group a go…

  • Playing a sport you like is best for cardio Hr at most. Weight Train no more than an 45min to an hour.. best strive for 30 min non stop w/ 30 sec. breaks between workouts… every other day. On your days off.. do yoga, stretching or light cardio. And like always.. What you eat will determine all your goals no matter what they are.

  • Thomas or anyone, does anyone have Tom’s work email? Or contact email? Wouldn’t mind sending this guy a huge thank you Starbucks card…. or helping him build his brand in one way or another. This free content on YouTube is honestly priceless. I feel like I owe him/you a favor. I’m in Oregon if there’s anything I can do around here to help spread your stuff regionally on my social networks.

  • Bro, I literally puked immediately after I got done my night time jog tonight. Came outta nowhere. I ran further and longer than usual this time. Maybe that was the cause?

  • I was looking around on YouTube for information on this topic and the I thought… “what does Layne have to say” then I found this video. you rock man keep it up. Only thing: DONT GO TO THE GYM WHEN YOURE SICK so you don’t get other people sick.

  • Interesting but too much info from gov.
God designed out bodies and they have a combination of good and bad bacteria, virus/s, germs, parasites millions living on our our outer skin and more inside our bodies and they work well until something foreign intefers with the nature of things, could be foreigng substance that affecs our bodies immune ability to eradicated foreign invaders

washing hands more often than awakeing, after bathroom, before meals and after diry work is killing of the good bacteria on our skin which leads to all kinds of horrific conditions if you dont have enough good bacteria/virus to fight the SUPER BUGS. do a search and see what can happen with to much washing what happens when we disturb the natural balance in any area of live our bodies or the world around us.

The Poisoned Needle p96 is the 1st book in the 25 book History of Vaccination series. pdf

you will find in here how many times they tried to get a virus excretions etc to infect 100 healthy people and failed every time. Bacteria can be spread person to person but no Virus,, unless outside interference
normal behaviour is eg, I upset on of the many virus in my body, and my immune system goes on the attack to remove the invader, if my immune system is working properly I might feel a little off to sick, and i could get cough, fever, sweats etc all signs that my body is attacking the contaminent, for removal I can help by drink lemon in hot water to incease sweats, dress extra warm and get into bed to increase sweats, also keep drinking fluids, and in this day instead of sleeping in sun and eating lemons we have the aid of vit C/D3,K2 and zinc, a couple of days of high dosge, and you r up and going

Millions of people have overcome coronavirus which has been around for decades, it is listed in American journals of medical advice/encyclopedia as coronavirus = common cold in 1934 well before vaccines and pharamcy supplements.

USA has bigger job because they eat very little good food, gmo, rubbish fast ‘food’ etc.
    but they can get there,

we all have to stop living the instant live and start working and moving and eating real natural food.

Thanks again, show is worded really simply and easy to understand. Blessings:)

  • Its interesting that all the top bodybuilders went to the gym twice a day, morning and afternoon. Are you telling me they could have had better results by training less?

  • I fell sick after 3 months of my workout training I thought it’s a viral fever or bad protein… But I was actually overtraining! Thanks for this video

  • I keep reading about overtraining but never actually hear what scientifically overtraining is. I have an idea what it is for me but would be nice to see what science says overtraining is. Thanks Thomas. Also please do a video on if a vasectomy has any affect on testosterone… if I have another kid because I don’t have an answer from you, I’m blaming you!!

  • So true! Just had labs done and WBC was a little low. Factor in my HILT and heavy lifting training almost 6 days a week with no more than 2 days off the past 6 months. I would say I’m due for a break! Thanks Thomas!!!!

  • Been following you for yearssss, love your content. Any who, can you post about gut health? Is it a real thing? I hear people who don’t exercise and yo yo diet associate every ailment to their gut which I think is BS but I’m no scientist.

  • I’m doing full-body training 3 times a week and 4 days rest. But each workout has 24 dumbbell exercises, Do I have higher risks to get sick as explained in the video?

  • For the longest time I’ve had the feeling of overtraining, I def know what conclusion I’m going to come to: moderation aka doing what feels good

  • Yale did a study with rats a couple of years ago that found that force feeding rats during viral infections had a beneficial effect on immune functioning but killed rats with bacterial infections. Thoughts?

  • Don’t apologize for awesome content. The science is why I watch your videos and not other’s! ^_^ Keep making them great and we’ll keep up.

  • Anyone else curious to see how Tom kid comes out. I just cant help but think that he will be close to the apex of fitness like his whole life.

  • Excellent video. I’ve cut back on anaerobic exercise and increased moderate activity with many positive health benefits. My gums are healthier, colds are infrequent and skin rashes/rosacea has lessened and an arrhythmia has disappeared. You can do something like crossfit or marathon training for ego or a more moderate program for your health. Kudos

  • Thank you for this advice. Also just bought your covid-19 immunity e-book and immunity-diet freedom plan! It was a lot of money, but I’m looking forward to getting my life back to normal.

  • As a former athlete….Overtraining, happened to me two times….when it happened the first time…and I overcame it…I said to myself that IT WOULD never happened to me again….and 5 years later it happened to me again….but that time it was much, much, worse….I also developed adrenal fatigue….well today according to Dr Carrie Jones, it is not adrenal fatigue but a “cortisol shift phenomenon”, where the cortisol production cycle shifts from morning to evening, which makes it hard to fall asleep; and hard to keep awake during the early mornings…. Anyway I overcame it after 1 year of complete REST….no exercising…..
Yes I agree, it takes a LOT OF ENERGY, from the system….I used to feel ALWAYS TIRED, even when I would wake up from a 9 hour sleep….
Yes, I agree too, LESS is MORE….and MORE is LESS… my workouts are very short but hard, and NOT LONG….a more quality than quantity workout routine…

  • While fall is coming with flu this vidéo Comes at thé right Time, thx Thomas. Il notice you need some breath… may be you should quit clen…?

  • I remember learning about antibodies when I was like seven years old. I cannot believe I forget such basic information over time. To keep this very basic information about the immune system alive in my memory I will make a note here.

Antibodies are proteins produced to the body to destroy invading cells. They are due to the work of B and T Cells. B and T Cells identify antigens they can use that information so that they can swiftly respond and deploy antibodies when a threat revisits. That is how the human body can develop immunity to certain diseases, like chickenpox.

Autoimmune diseases trick the body into attacking their own cells.

  • Back in the 90s I participated in competitive cycling for most of the decade. I engaged in regular training at a very intense level sometimes for several hours several times a week. In that time I experienced an interesting immune response that I learned to take advantage of. If I came down with the flue or a cold. I would wait till the illness was just past its peak. Usually about the second full day of illness. I would then go out on a 2 to 3 hour ride of moderate to medium intensity. At the beginning of the ride I would still have some symptoms including mild fever and some respiratory congestion. Constantly, by the time I finish the ride I would have no symptoms at all and felt fantastic. I did this consistently throughout my time as a competitive cyclist and it NEVER failed me. These days I do moderate to medium effort walking and powerwalking instead of cycling. I exercise normally between 45 min to an hour and 20 min at a time. Since walking for 5 years, I have not been sick once.

  • It`s truly a good ED treatment method to overcome a few of your issues in the bedroom. I`m content regarding having discovered it since I was attempting to get over my lack of ability to keep at attention. Obtaining a great feeling every night I employ this useful manual.. Take a look at this guide on Google, name of this tip is Kαylo Bacumlo
    thank you

  • Asalamoalaikum Dr Umar

We need to work really hard to educate the people about their health especially in the developing world. That will improve the overall health of the community and thereby reduce the burden on the Healthcare systems which are already fragile.
    MEDsimplified is doing exactly that.

  • Thank you for this video. Right on time. This is happening to me. I had blood work which showed my uric acid is low. I have been experiencing a lot of muscle and joint pain. Increase fatigue. I thought it was due to winter time long nights and just pure cold. She instructed I take gluthione. I told her I’m taking already. I researched and realized I need to increase to twice a day instead of only once a day. Will do this for next month and see if improvement occurs. I will also decrease my training to 4 days a week for a month. Thank you again

  • Dr. Layne, we are in sync without content. Yesterday I was talking about natural ways to protect from the virus… and some to stop it in the early stages. Breathing garlic was one. It’s worth a try.

  • Modern medicine is oriented toward fighting symptoms, which is essentially fighting against our body’s defense response. Got a fever? Bring that thing down with medication!
And all this complexity? Let’s “help it out” with vaccines… our immune system needs our intervention

  • I think this was clear.

You should be constant on a moderate intensity exercise, rather than being a 1-day-per-week-“athlete” who wants to burn everything got in six days of trash food and sedentary lifestyle. Moreover, you whould not try to compensate a bad nutrition with prolonged hours of workout.
Be smart. Eat healthy and go to the gym for overtime progression and maintenance.

However, on the other extreme, we have sport competitions. I think everyone interested in competitions should know that there is other reasons outside “health lifestyle” for competitions, e.g.: money, trophy, medals, podium, fame, addiction, fun etc.
It is the risk reward ratio. You get exposed. You know it. It may be immunesupression, it may be a fracture, or a torn ligament.

Obs.: I love to play football =D

  • For muslim all of creation of such a complex system requires the master that has all information about immune system, cells their strategy and so on. How the non thinkable cells protect our body. Their Master is the only one who has the ability to think and has a knowledge about ecerything. In islam we call it “ALLAH”

  • The control group from the study was in a race. Competition is very stressful. I don’t think the control group represents most people. There is good stress and bad stress. Competition presents a mental component that is a whole different ball game than from someone working out or practicing a fitness routine for fun.

  • I just started back at the gym and had only been going for a month now. In the first 3 weeks I realized I over trained too much because I’ve been sick this past week pretty bad. No fever but sore throat headache and my sinuses are blocked. I saw amazing results and for something like this to happen just makes me question wtf. This vid was very helpful to learn what I need to fix.

  • I’m on an Immunosuppressant but exercise is very important for my psychological wellbeing. I love my weekly progressions but now I’m actually sick from a hard workout. Idk

  • Oh my god! Thank you thomas, many times i have autoimmune condition hypothyroidism. I developed the condition 3 years ago when i started overworking out n until this day didn’t know why I couldn’t reverse it even tho i have changed my diet to all organic non gluten

  • Kind of seems like a lot of people have forgotten how this ‘immune system’ if that is in fact what it is (sarcasm) works. We’ve been doing this for what, 40k years? All of a sudden no one is allowed to get sick. No one is allowed to adapt their immune systems to a new pathogen naturally. Mental health is suffering.

  • This is the real solution that those who want to strengthen thier immune system and defend the body against deseases.

You can visit it here >

  • Constant overtrainer since I was 14, now 42 and with at least one diagnosed auto-immune illness (which I am handling).

I So wish this information was this readily available when I was younger! Thank you so much, Thomas DeLauer, this is potential life-saving. I am waiting for an operation and has overtrained twice the last six months and my physiotherapist does his best to talk me into easing up. I will do that from now on. Thank you!

(The extra pounds I have will be gone by controlling diet, I used to be able to eat whatever…)

This is my favorite video ever! <3 <3 <3

Best wishes on your family life,

  • I am a server in a very large restaurant and omggg it’s so hard because I want to have enough energy to work (more if I can!), train, exercise for fun like surfing, and be able to sing—— all of which takes a lot of energy! And I also just turned 31 (!!) and I’m trying to be well rested! It’s a struggle! I’d like to find a different job but the only way to do that is to hustle even harder to dig myself out of this lifestyle I feel like a juggler sometimes. Definitely exhausted most days. Sleep eat work repeat is a sad but true reality just to pay the rent a lot of the time. Surf? No I wish.

  • I do not normally like giving my views about certain matters, but the Herpes treatment solution from Dr Agbonifo is simply too great not to share due to its fast and effective outcomes. I saw a massive development right after just Two weeks. This morning, the Herpes were unseen after well treated.By Doctor Agbonifo contact him 0n [email protected] or WhatsApp number is +234-903-474-9874.

  • I was having some seriously bad ED problems but this ED treatment solution truly got me back to where I wanted to be. Having this peak of my desire is not a problem anymore. You men out there should consider this as well. This is not merely effective but potent too. Looking for this guide on Google, name of this tip is Kαylo Bacumlo
    thank you

  • Wjhile most of the stuff he says in the video is really helpful(and perhaps urgent). Major porion of this videos felt off to me. Especially the part at the begining when he said, “immune system is supressed” while later he explained that, what actually OT(over training) caused that, “It boosted the sub types of immune system”. Basically opposite of immunosupression in layman language, but with its own related facts.

So I went out of my way and looked through couple of reputated studies mentioned on the links.
While the NCBI shows believable evidences that overtraining degrades immune system(along with other physiological systems). The Iranian study at 5:30 was done on “wistar rats” and not on the humans by the way. Nontheless the studied said the same thing as told on vid.

Also, one more thing that NCBI studies indicated that illnesses coming from EE(Execessive exercise) are not particularly because of the immunosupression. But actually the altered focus of immune system.

I’m not really trying to point out fingers, and his job on the video was really commendable that drew necessary attention. But the facts were not that vivid.(Perhaps to make the vid more of a crisp ig)

  • Thanks for sharing this detailed overview of the immune system. To learn more about the importance of strengthening the immune system, especially for seniors, this article is helpful:

  • Excellent video, I trained like crazy in my teens and early twenties, and the time I was 26 I had an autoimmune thyroid disorder. I thought maybe the thyroid condition was hereditary, but this may have been the culprit as I took lots of pre-work out mixes then to boost my work outs.

  • Exercise is needed to get circulation and increase breathing, but I totally agree overtraining can be harmful. A lot of guys overtrain to get stronger, but also for a better physique, and to increase muscle mass. Could you make a video about how to exercise to get stronger, but not that it causes the effects of overtraining?

Also would implementing long duration, steady state cardio mitigate the effects of overtraining especially when paired with coffee and fasting?

Thank you, your content is awesome

  • Excellent info. Enjoyed this video! As far as I know, this company from New York is very skilled and experienced in Spontaneous Tumor research. You can visit They also offer custom Tumor model development and validation services for new or uncharacterized cell lines.

  • Thanks! SENIORS need 2 walk more 4 good blood circulation. But they dont
Seniors don’t sit 2 long. Move around every hour. Work out side. Walk or move around in ur chair. U don’t want blood clots. Drink ur water ALSO!

  • Learned most of this stuff from the anime cells at work, if you are looking for an eduactional anime I highly recommend: Dr. stone and cells at work.

  • Today in this time of crisis due to COVID19

I was scared because of my immune system was down due to my Hiv status. people are very alert to boost there immunity and are trying different things to stay healthy and safe. Stress not to wonder what is the best. Here I found the best Herbal cure to make me Negative again. (Dr kanayo 14 days herbal cure) if you don’t believe research on your internet. it was recommended to me by a lady who used it to cure her Diabetes and Herpes

  • This is so timely for me. Keto helped put my auto immune disease in remission but over training has re-triggered it. I was suspecting too much exercise/stress was the culprit, this video confirms it. I’ve been out of the gym for about 2 months now.. I’m not even sure how to proceed.

  • Its a good thing they have caption since they always seem to put someone with a heavy intelligible accent that sound like they have food in their mouths as they speak

  • I do cardio workout including 20 minutes of running and 7 minutes of cycling and some stretching workout. I was 94.3 kgs when joined the gym and now i am 92.4 kgs. But the thing is, the output on that weight loss is at a very less pace and it takes out a whole lot of energy out of my body making me feel sick and weak. How do I resolve this, any suggestions?

  • For anyone who follows Mark Sisson, one of the first people to popularize a more ancestral pattern of eating, this story is very familiar. Sisson was an elite marathon runner, and one of the things that compelled him to stop running competitively was his frequent bouts with an upper respiratory infection, which he now ascribes to a combination of a high volume of training, along with the high carb diet promoted in competitive endurance circles. So much of our media attention is focused on how sedentary Americans are, and while that certainly is a huge problem, among a growing number of recreational fitness enthusiasts, over training is becoming a problem. So I really appreciate you bringing some balance to this issue with this video.

  • The immune system is awesome,I mean do you know an organism that can create an attack plan when a soldier randomly eats some foreign consumable? Didn’t think so!

  • I just watched an episode of “Captain Obvious”. Jumping on the bandwagon of how to improve the immune system after misrepresenting and bashing others doing the same.

  • Think about this!!!! Getting sick maybe a natural mechanism ( rest, sleep and recovery ). When we workout hard we destroy the old tissues etc and getting sick is like a cocoon mechanism for the body to successfully create much more than just new and strong muscles

  • I realized today I was overtraining and I’ve been feeling nauseous all day because I pushed myself a bit harder the past couple of weeks and ab day this week. It hurts when I take deep breaths, laugh, pee, get up from sitting or laying down, etc. I also did a dumb thing and tried fasting for a longer period of time compared to my usual 12 hour fasts. I fasted for 18 hours AND after I had only eaten 2 meals which both equaled to 500 calories total (not each).

Don’t be dumb like me, PLEASE! I don’t care how down you feel about yourself or how much you want to change with your body. Be patient because you will get your results and hurting yourself and pushing yourself too hard like I did won’t help you, it’ll make things worse and it’s not worth it.

Listen to your body when it wants to stop doing something. I’m openly admitting my stupidity because hopefully someone out there won’t make the same mistakes and isn’t missing a day from work because they were busy puking from ab and hunger pains.

Take your time. You will get there.

  • Great informative video. Thank you. I have been known to push myself too far when it comes to training, 6 times/week at least 1 hour long workouts, consisting of both cardio and heavy weightlifting, and boy oh boy has my body been suffering. My allergies have been horrible, and I have even had problems with my thyroid…whops. I really need to lower my training intensity.

  • Hey Thomas, I’m interested in learning what the optimal ketone levels for autophagy are. If you could do a video or point me in the right direction, I’d be grateful. Thanks.

  • Great video Thomas, very informative. So for those that are over training would their white blood cell count show up below the levels?

The human body has limits and if you want to see how far it will get naturally just take a look at the natural body building scene where size and mass is limited. Then take a look at these celebrities and that will give you a huge clue as to the truth as to who takes juice and who does not.
