I became a vegetarian around the age of 12, so I’ve made my fair share of veggie burgers throughout the years. The funny thing is, I still don’t have a go-to recipe. That’s because most homemade veggie burgers. Whisk cornstarch, water, chile-garlic sauce, chili powder, cumin, seafood seasoning, salt, and black pepper together in a separate small bowl. Stir cornstarch mixture.

Fry your black bean patties in a small amount of oil over medium-low heat until slightly firm and lightly browned on each side, about 3 minutes.

To make the veggie burgers, first drain, rinse, and mash the beans either by hand or in a food processor, depending on desired burger texture. Stir in all other ingredients, and form patties. Drain, but do not rinse, the black beans. Place them in a bowl and use a fork to mash them.
Keep mashing until they’re mostly broken up, but still have some whole beans visible. Add the breadcrumbs, onion, egg, chili powder, salt, pepper, and hot sauce. WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS: Hearty, healthy black beans make the perfect base for a flavorful vegetarian burger, and using convenient canned beans means these burgers can be on the table in just 30 minutes.
The 1:1 ratio of ground meat to vegetables and herbs (mushrooms, onions, and parsley) might seem like it won’t produce a meaty burger, but just trust me on this one.
Totally digging yr citrus slaw to include inside the burger assembly. (Prefer fresh vegs (onions, lettuce, & tomatoes) inside. Also, prefer a vegan tofu/cashew garlic aioli to the toasted buns to give a “cheese” like finish to my classic vegan burger. Giving height to a burger doesnt make it easy to bite it bc things fall out so İ personally think thr guac should be served separate w/ crisp sweet potato chips.
What I appreciate the most about your recipes and presentation is that all your foods are PACKED with savory flavors and you neatly dress up your meals. Good job bro. Keep going
I love the recipe, i find though that the mixture sticks to my hands like glue when im trying to shape the burger. Any suggestions on how to stop that from happening?
Can not wait to make these!.. They look so good and so healthy..Also great for someone on a tight grocery budget..Trying to eat less meat. Thank you ..
Hello. Thank you for sharing. Can you explain if the use of soy is necessary? I can’t eat food with soy. Will it largely take away the texture to not use the soy? Thanks again.
I made this without the oil and soy sauce (to make it a wfpb meal) and it was awesome. I put them in my freezer for the week and grilled them up to eat on top of brown rice and veggies with some hot sauce. Losing weight and not restricting!
I tried this recipe and it was great but I changed it a little bit, I grated raw beatroot into the beans instead of carrot and i used kidney beans not black beans, it really tastes awesome!:) <3
Love you videos and I have been vegan for a little over a year! Learning to cook all over again and your food looks amazing. Just ordered your cookbook with 100 recipes and it will arrive this Saturday can’t wait. Also love the music that’s played on your videos
OK, but if you’d lose the eggs, which you do not need…it stays together fine, then it can be good for vegans. Why add unwanted cholesterol? Why not use all cruelty-free ingredients?
Another question as my bean burgers are frying up. How long would the mixture stay good if you were to put it in the refrigerator to at random instead of freezing it as patties?
Wow! Definitely going to try this! Been wondering about how these fast food restaurants are coming up with plant based burgers that taste like beef? Any ideas? ❤
I just made this for dinner and it’s soooo goooodddddd! It’s my first black bean veggie burger, at the first bite it was so confusing because it tastes so meaty!
I made them today and instead eggs added two spoons of flax seeds and black beans not from can ( to avoid chemicals from the lining of the metal can ).i soak my beans night before, cooked in pressure cooker for 25 minutes, rinse and strain, than use for preparation of really healthy food.
These came out so good! Sure glad I doubled the recipe. I baked 6 on an oiled cookie sheet 350F/15 min first side, 10 min 2nd side.I’ll freeze those for later in the week. Meanwhile I fried 2 in a pan and ate them. YUM! I find using a 1/3 c. measuring scoop gives me just the right size patty. THANK YOU for this recipe. The sauce is DELISH!
LOVE THAT YOU SHOW HOW IT IS DONE AND WHAT IT IS SUSPOSE TO LOOK LIKE WHEN BURGERS ARE COOK THANK YOU FOR THINKING OF PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO CAN NOT COOK THANK YOU
Good day my made my bean burger mixture 1can black beans 1 cup oats 4 medium size mushrooms Parsley Paprika Garlic chop onions Tomato paste Seasoning Form into a Patti and bake on 350 for 10minutes on each side
I made this recipe, using my leftover carrot fiber from a carrot juice I made instead of mushrooms and tomate paste and maple syrup instead of ketchup and the burgers were super good! Thanks for the recipe!
Delicious -you are funny-love your style and you are a great chef-I doubled the beans for 3 large paddies and added some crushed almonds and some left over baguette of butter garlic bread that I had in the refrigerator and it was a big hit( I think the garlic butter bread comes that I used that I had made added sooo much flavor-also I used 2 and a half large cloves of garlic -used the food prossor and it was less work! Thanks
Hey Julia, do you remember what size of the can you used? I only have dried black beans that I’d soak but for measurement-wise, what would you say how much would you recommend to use? Best, Annie from Germany
I’m a vegetariansaw black bean burgers at the supermarket but they contained soy and corn syrup plus they were pretty pricey… 3 patties for $5. I decided to look up a recipe and found this one. Very easy to make and tasty plus saves so much money as the ingredients are cheap and easy to find… they were all in my kitchen! Thank you
Great recipes. Veggie burgers are yummy and healthy. I recently made them with chickpeas and nuts, you can check out my recipe if interested https://youtu.be/TJWZ8tjvA-I
Ok so I tried this and it’s freaking amazing!! (Added some pickles and avo omg). I also just pan fried them which is much quicker and they turned out perfectly fine!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Another burger dressed up to the point of being inedible. I want to eat a burger not wear it. The guacamole goes under the patty, the tomatoes need to lie flat and there is only room for one more thin layer above the tomatoes. Then you have a hope of eating it like a burger should be eaten…..otherwise I love the burger itself.
Alright, I love, love your recipes, but I am Mexican and my only complain is that when you talk about salsa for every Mexican a salsa it’s liquidly, or at least finely chopped and mixed. But your salsa doesn’t look like salsa, those are just sliced and chopped tomatoes and onions. I’m sorry but that weighted on me.
This may be a silly question, but if i were to want to batch make these and freeze them, should i bake them before freezing and then heat them back up when ready to eat? or would i leave them as raw patties in the freezer until i want to prepare them?
I do like the black bean patties from Which Wich, but I would prefer to make it at home. Thanks for the recipe and accompanying video. It is very well made. I like you hands.

Have you tried to make them a head and stick them in the refrigerator how does the bread crumbs hold up when you fry it if you have I try to make these a head of time before my family comes home so that I’m not rushed I just don’t want to make these if they fall apart because the bread crumbs are too wet
No top comments about the food. Made it to a T and it tastes good but my patty broke when trying to flip it. My patty was pretty fragile. What can I do to fix it next time?
Oil adds a lot of calories dont need it just water fry the veggies then drain out water pat veggies dry with tea towel, dont need egg add spices n organic oat flour (reg oat flour has glyphosate toxic herbicide) use stainless steel cookware as iron pans transfer iron into your food then into you. if u get too much iron in your body u can become chronically ill. dont need to fry the burger as oil adds calories just bake the burgers.
I’ll be making this later today. This was a very simple recipe with all the ingredients already in my cabinet and refrigerator. Thanks for such a simple recipe.
WOW!! We did one with my GF and it was so good! We made a VIDEO about the recipe by changing some of the thing!! we show all of our recipe if you want it check it out here is the link! THANK YOU so muck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKq466qPyng&t=1s
Ohhh my god! This tasted so good! That Chile pepper really gave a good smoky flavor with spice. I’m taking a break from meat and I must say, the recipes on this channel are so filling! I’m excited about food in a new way. I’m discovering new spices and foods I would have never even tried! A whole new whole
It’s absolutely amazing! I loved the texture and flavours really come out well in palate…. What I substitute with instead of buckwheat flour is chick pea flour! God bless you and I do hope more guys get inspired by your efforts for healthy eating.. Stay blessed
Made two batches of these today, Gaz is so right about not blending the mix too much, I did first time and although they were really tasty, they were too smooth. Second attempt only had three short pulses in the blender and the texture is awesome. I also dried the beans slightly in a low fan oven as they were tinned. Chopped the salsa smaller than the recipe/video (bought the book) and made the “Guac” which is to die for!!!
This is awesome I’m new to the whole vegan thing I have go through the process of finding alternatives to all my favorite foods some things I’ve had trouble with and had to result to just eating traditional beef because I’m also pretty picky so this is perfect because i love eating beans I guess the eggs can be removed
To Lost Soul: I am awake. You choose what you eat and I will choose what I eat. I prefer not to eat tortured and inhumanly killed and butchered animals full of God knows how many hormones and other harmful contents. God bless you and give you abundant life.
You’re a chef, and have a cook book out, yet you called cilantro “corriander”? You more than anyone should know the green part is called cilantro, the seeds are called corriander…FAIL
Much better to whip the eggs a little and then mix. One can make chia egg for a replacement also, and add tomato paste or ketchup. Use a mixture of blended up quick oats cornmeal instead of breadcrumbs.
Have you ever tried to cook the bean burgers in a NuWave oven and I don’t have a food processor so I’ll use my potato masher to blend the ingredients together?
This recipe is close to perfect. I used it as a meat substitute for a shepards pie and it turned out perfect. I just added garlic salt, 1/2 (not a whole) onion and a bit more coriander. The original recipe doesn’t have too much flavor so season to taste.
Great recipe, thank you so much. Just made a batch. I modified as follows: skipped the hot peppers and included a packed cup of fresh parsley. For spices I used cumin, turmeric, kofta spice blend, and smoked paprika. They turned out delicious
WAY to much breadcrumbs. Just let the beans dry out a bit. Put in oven for a bit. Use about 1/4 or half cup of crumbs. Otherwise the texture will be like sand.
You should rinse and inspect your canned beans very closely.
Been weevils infest beans. The adult will lay eggs somewhere in or near the pods or beans. As they hatch the maggots enter the beans and spend their larvae and pupae stages inside the bean. They emerge as adults.
So, in a can of beans, you may find anything from weevil maggots to adult weevils. Since canned beans have been soaked, the outter skin is softened and it is easier to detect burrowed weevils.
After rinsing well, I use a powerful light in a dark area to detect dark areas in the beans. If found, discard the individual beans or the entire can if there’s a lot. However, I’ve never tried this with black beans.
If there are holes in the sides of beans, that’s where the adult emerged. Weevils are tiny, so if you’re not looking closely, you can miss them.
The FDA actually allows a certain amount of weevils (various stages) in your beans. See the FDA Food Defect Action List.
Most all processed foods, even if labeled ‘vegan,’ contain insect and other animal contamination. Just like that commercially produced wheat bun… it’s got everything from insect, rodent, avian and reptilian contamination. It’s impossible to commercially grow, harvest, store, transport, mill and process wheat without contamination. As long as it doesn’t pose a public health risk, the FDA states it’s ok, just keep the contamination to a minimum.
I just read up your “About” page in your website. You are such an awesome human being. Just subscribed to your channel! Looking forward to making everything you have shared with us.
I could hear the crunch when you took the first bite. Your ingredients are gorgeous so have added this one to the top of the list to make. Thankyou for bringing back the art and beauty of cooking whilst not missing out on taste or the heartiness of the meal. I am not yet a vegan but have been vegetarian for two decades…not sure about “pretend” dairy…
Gaz mate…effing YEAH!.. EVERY recipe I’ve cooked of yours so far is the absolute best! Everything works and tastes great, is the biggest compliment I can give. Thank you, from a meat eater who gave up meat at the start of lockdown
Wow I am eating this right nkw and OMG it is delicious, I added Memphis BBQ style seasoning because that’s how I like my burguers. I’m not vegan/vegetarian but this os yummmy! Thanks for the recipe!
This recipe looks simple and uncomplicated. The ingredients look yummy and I really appreciate the straight forward video. I will try this burger today and get back!
This is such a camera disaster and cluster F. Max is not showing us anything that Sam is doing. This is so hilarious! Max doesn’t seem to know that his camera is off. How can I learn how to make the black bean burger if I can’t see it? Yvette M.
I came here to see how you make the burger but instead all I saw was a fuckbomb a$$hole sounding off and snarling and foaming from his mouth with arrogance. Fuck your canned burger you shithead.
i wanted to subscribe after watching this video, but when i clicked on get recipe it takes you to a page where you can only buy your book.. there is no recipe there..
THANK YOU! I made it and it was DELICIOUS. It tasted a little bit too much like meat, I got scared So, YES, the recipe works, random person who doubts this
Hi, first of all, I absolutely love your video and since I first saw it a few weeks ago I’ve been trying to get hold of oat flour but unable to get it anywhere, I know you also recommend quick oats but I prefer to use a flour but something gluten free. Would buckwheat flour or rice flour do the job do you think?
I like him but I don’t like him talking to whoever he’s talking to because it just prolongs the video we have lives we’d like to just watch him and move on
I love your videos..and the burger is very good. However, I am not a guy… So the you guys thing is irritating. How about you folks instead.. Sounds so much nicer….just saying….
This burger looks like crap, not because it’s vegan. It’s all thatcrap he put on top. Just because you put guacamole and nacho Doritos doesn’t make it mexican.
Do some more Vegan videos. The world is changing man. More Vegans every day. People are sick of the animal cruelty, the effects on the environment, not to mention all the hormones in meat, high cholesterol and hardened arteries
What’s the point of posting this if you don’t give the recipes for it? I feel like you have more ads than other youtubers and they provide the recipes. I like your videos but its kinda a tease
I didn’t wanna add egg so I just skipped the egg and the oat flour. Turned out really good, I think they definitely cancel each other out and were a bit unnecessary. You could also use chia or flax to make it even healthier and bind it together
You vegans are the strangest lot. You don’t eat meat, you don’t want other people to eat meat because it’s “cruel,” you don’t want animals being killed to eat, but yet you eat “pretend” meat. So if you are REALLY against eating meat and LOVE your plant diet, you shouldn’t be pretending to eat meat because then you’re “pretending” to eat something from an animal. See how illogical that is? So if you’re TRULY into being vegan, you shouldn’t be promoting ANYTHING similar to meat at ALL if you’re all into NO MEAT! Might as well make a big cow out of plants and then chop it up to eat. So in reality, you’re hypocrites because you’re promoting eating meat in another form. So in reality, you’re mimicking the very thing you’re against, people eating an animal. That is truly insanity!
Avocados are bullshit! You don’t put fruit on a goddamn burger, I mean you might as well sprinkle a teaspoon of sugar on top of the burger while you’re at it.
Gaz do you have the calorie information on all your cookbook recipes? I have two of your cookbooks including the new one and none have the calorie info.
I made this thinking it wouldn’t taste that good and then when it was finished I tried it and it was AMAZING! Seriously I think everyone should try this.
Love how you made this video with the jazz music playing in the background and just showing how you made the burger w/ text. Brilliant! Will definitely try to make this recipe this weekend! Thank you!
Suggestion: the long distant video is useless. We need closeups of what your doing with hands. Why is your son even in the pic. No need the whole kitchen following you and him too. Who cares just the recipe and demo
What a shitty video and a poor performance. 90% of the closeup footage is lost, he behaves like a 15 year old throwing rubbish around his kitchen, acting way too (wannabe) cool and messy I had to cut off before the end because it gave me cancer.
Just cook dude and stop trying to be cool n trendy. Thats where real coolness comes from. Its about passion and putting your heart in your cooking, not about flamethrowers. Maybe watch some videos of Gennaro Contaldo and learn from a real master!
You know what? I would have eaten that burger with a couple of slices of your home made bread, better if it were rye or whole wheat bread. Excellent and inspiring work as usual! ❤️
Max has come a long way with his editing skills I have to say. This felt like a fly in the wall kind of view at times lol. Yet you still throw down in the damn kitchen so props to you all day
Oh my gosh girl. This was great. I’ve been a black bean burgers with side of skinny gingered sweet potato fries made in cast iron skillets for couple decades…yes I’m old. I loved your addition of other sauted veggies. Taking the time to layer your flavors is such a great idea. So beautiful.
Great video:) This was a lot simpler than I thought it would be… question about the black beans: did you cook them in a pot first or did you just dump them straight from the can, after adding in the mushrooms and onions?
Thanks for this great video, healthy and tasty. Even though some say the jury is still out about aluminum foil, most people who cook in a healthy, nontoxic way prefer staying away from cooking on aluminum foil, not criticizing just sharing a thought. Keep up the great work!
Just making these now. I think they will be just what I want. I didn’t want any unmashed beans in mine, so I put all in the food processor, and baked them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper under them. They need more baking time than 20 minutes if you like them firm. At the 20 minute mark, I took them out, pressed them more into a burger shape as before baking they were so soft I could only spoon them onto the baking sheet. At 20 minutes you can flip and flatten them a bit. I don’t want moist centers, so I’m baking these total of 30 mins on 200. Thank you for this forgiving and helpful video that just is so easy to follow.
Enjoy!!! So delicious Thank-you so much for sharing this lovely video …. Very delicious vegan sandwich!!.. You are Genius…. Hello from Africa Cairo Egypt Pyramids
Ok. This was a little bit of a struggle to make. My patties turned out so sticky. I had to add a copious amount of flour just to make them a little more moldable. The mixture stuck to my hands and got all over the place. I turned my skillet to medium-high heat and I burned my patty and smoked up the whole house. After troubleshooting and turning down the heat I managed to make a nice patty that held together well, but the contents were still kind of uncooked on the inside. Someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong.
Everyone on here with your shit comments SMH! Sam is awesome! This is his actual house… He does whatever he wants. He’s not rude, that’s his personality. His crew loves him!
Great Burger Recipe and ingredients. I follow and subscribe to your channel, I have had many of your recipes and they are amazing. You are very talented! Your demeanor is interesting in this video. I would have to say, If you worked for me I would Fired you. You treat your staff very poorly and dis-tastefully in this video. I do however wish you success and hope you see that success does not come from being a dic% to those around you. I myself learned that early in my career. I do hope you reach success to levels that I have been able to achieve, I eventually learned from my arrogant mistakes and became so much more successful. Although I was a professional athlete and not a chef success follows the same trends. I look forward to more of your cooking videos. -Shawn Turner NFL Wide Receiver.
I gave up three minutes in and I had already pressed fast forward after the first minute lmao absolute torture watching this.

Any ideas? ❤
I will going vegan on the 1st of June. Before then I will be eating as much meat and all the junk I can. Thanks to you I became inspired.
I just made this for dinner and it’s soooo goooodddddd! It’s my first black bean veggie burger, at the first bite it was so confusing because it tastes so meaty!
Best freakin’ cooking channel. One of the best YouTube channels, all because this dude is a real guy showing us things we can all do.
I made them today and instead eggs added two spoons of flax seeds and black beans not from can ( to avoid chemicals from the lining of the metal can ).i soak my beans night before, cooked in pressure cooker for 25 minutes, rinse and strain, than use for preparation of really healthy food.
New to your channel, and this is my very first episode….. Looks Great! Do you have the recipe somewhere online? And what is the name of your book?
These came out so good! Sure glad I doubled the recipe. I baked 6 on an oiled cookie sheet 350F/15 min first side, 10 min 2nd side.I’ll freeze those for later in the week. Meanwhile I fried 2 in a pan and ate them. YUM! I find using a 1/3 c. measuring scoop gives me just the right size patty. THANK YOU for this recipe. The sauce is DELISH!
LOVE THAT YOU SHOW HOW IT IS DONE AND WHAT IT IS SUSPOSE TO LOOK LIKE WHEN BURGERS ARE COOK THANK YOU FOR THINKING OF PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO CAN NOT COOK THANK YOU
Good day my made my bean burger mixture
1can black beans
1 cup oats
4 medium size mushrooms
Parsley
Paprika
Garlic chop onions
Tomato paste
Seasoning
Form into a Patti and bake on 350 for 10minutes on each side
tha fact tha u even eat canned beans shows u are far from respectable or knowledgable cook….. what tha hell are yall even doin… im out…
Another burger dressed up to the point of being inedible.

I love my veggie burger on an everything bagel with a little bit of salsa or barbecue sauce. Or on a round roll with an avocado mayonnaise
This recipe, as-is doesn’t work well. First, there isn’t enough of a binder. They just turn to mush on the first bite.
Second, the patties are WAY too thick.
If you can tolerate it, add an egg for a binder and make the patties about half the thickness you see.
No top comments about the food. Made it to a T and it tastes good but my patty broke when trying to flip it. My patty was pretty fragile. What can I do to fix it next time?
Awww yummy i love vegan food this looks both tasty and healthy. Please do more vegetarian and vegan recipes. Thank you
Oil adds a lot of calories dont need it just water fry the veggies then drain out water pat veggies dry with tea towel, dont need egg add spices n organic oat flour (reg oat flour has glyphosate toxic herbicide) use stainless steel cookware as iron pans transfer iron into your food then into you. if u get too much iron in your body u can become chronically ill. dont need to fry the burger as oil adds calories just bake the burgers.
THANK YOU so muck

For diabetics use a small amount of almond flour instead of bread crumbs, and try out 90 second buns (0 carb) which are fantastic.
What is the point of a black bean burger if you’re going to put dairy on it? It’s almost like having a veggie burger with bacon. LOL
Otherwise the texture will be like sand.
there is nothing worse when you watch a video and they don’t list the exact measurements or provide a link to the exact measurements…..
Yvette M.
I’m neither vegan nor vegetarian, but I have to say that looked delicious. I will definitely try that. Thank you for posting that recipe.
I had been searching for a black bean burger and everyone had sooooo many ingredients. Then it hit me like a flash of lighting Sam will have one!!!
Do some more Vegan videos. The world is changing man. More Vegans every day. People are sick of the animal cruelty, the effects on the environment, not to mention all the hormones in meat, high cholesterol and hardened arteries
Is that a dying cat or a crying baby in the background?? I can’t tell
Also, loved this recipe!! Will definitely be making this burger more often:))
That is truly insanity!
it sounds and looks really good, but huge! I’d have to eat that ‘deconstructed’ on the plate and it would still taste nice I’m sure.
Exactly what I was looking for. Not a vegetarian, but I’m trying to cut down on the red meat I eat. Thank you for the easy and quick recipe!
Made these today, they were very satisfying! Trying to incorporate more meatless meals and this recipe is definitely a keeper! Thanks!
The beans look like kidney, not black or turtle beans. However, one bean is easily substituted for another so I guess it doesn’t make much difference.
This burger is delicious! I served it with homemade vegan dressing+ ketchup+ avocado+ lettuce+tomato+onion+homemade buns. Highly recommend!
Hello from Africa Cairo Egypt Pyramids
omg that looks amazing. i love the dynamic and how these are shot! so different and fun compared to every other youtube cooking channel. keep it up.
This was my first time watching one of your videos. You were kinda all over of the place but I’m most definitely going to make this burger Sam.
