Is Yoga a Good Workout? How Often Should You do Yoga as Your Primary Workout?

Yoga is not necessarily an aerobic exercise in the same category as walking, running, biking, or using an elliptical machine, says Laskowski. Whether or. Ultimately, yoga can be a good workout — just don’t rely on it for developing fitness and strength. That said, there’s no form of exercise that checks all the necessary boxes, Heilig says.

Your best bet will be to seek variety in your exercise routine. If you caught wind of a recent study, you may be asking yourself, “Does yoga count as exercise?” If you’ve been unrolling your yoga mat each day as a way to meet your recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise, the answer may be no, depending on the type of yoga you practice. Is Yoga A Real Workout?

Yes, but it’s not as simple as that. The point of Yoga is to focus your energy on specific tasks, poses, and flows. According to Bentivoglio, different types of Yoga work your body in specific ways. “The forms of Yoga can vary from physically demanding and vigorous Power Yoga to meditative and Restorative Yoga.”.

Ultimately, yoga can be a good workout — just don’t rely on it for developing fitness and strength. That said, there’s no form of exercise that checks all the necessary boxes, Heilig says. Your best bet will be to seek variety in your exercise routine.

It needs to be said that, no form of exercise provides all the needed effects. In the long run, yoga can be a good workout, but individuals should not depend on it for the improvement of fitness and strength. Therefore, yoga is best done in conjunction with other workout routines. Yoga As Cardio Traditional cardio workouts have a number of huge health benefits, like a decreased risk of metabolic syndromes (such as obesity), improved blood pressure and cholesterol, and lower BMIs and triglyceride levels. If you dive a little deeper into the extended version of the HHS guidelines, you’ll find that “some yoga postures” are mentioned specifically as an option for strength training.

So if you’re doing the right type of muscle-building yoga then yes, it can count as strength training for health purposes. However, it’s important to remember that not all yoga styles are created equal, which is part of what. Yoga does more than burn calories and tone muscles.

It’s a total mind-body workout that combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing and. Yoga increases muscle endurance because you typically hold any given pose for a period of time and repeat it several times during a yoga workout. For good general fitness, do some of both.

  • For anyone thinking yoga dont build muscles or require strength.

I dare you to stand in downward dog for 20 minutes.
Or just do the crow pose or head/shoulderstand and keep that pose for a few minutes.

  • Thanks! Was wondering this. I add weights to my practice actually, I’ve seen great results with that, when the yoga is more on the fitness side rather than traditional.

  • Hello. I would like to ask if jump rope good for scoliosis. I had a history of scoliosis at lower back and it does painful but that was ages ago. And now I did jump rope as my cardio workout for almost 2 weeks and I can feel the pain again in my lower back. After jump rope I do yogo as a cool down and also for the calves and muscles fir 15-20 min. I hope you can help me with this. I find jump rope so exciting and I want to continue doing this as my cardio.

  • I do Yoga everyday, Muay Thai 3-4 times a week and Gym 2-3 times a week. It’s a combination that works for me and I just feel fantastic:>

  • I’d like to share a hack on the internet for the popular meditation tips. Go to Google and type: “MindYoga4U”. You’re going to become a master with the ideas available.

  • If youre going to the gym to build some muscles then ofcurse its better to do it afterwards since you get calm from the yoga. Sorry for bad english grettings from Germany.

  • I practice about 4x a week doing 60 min weighted sculpt or vinyasa classes, throwing in a hot Bikram style class every now and then.

You’re right about the lower back pain. I’ve noticed that after doing lots of forward folds.

  • i dont just want to train for a good body.i want to become superhuman, nietzsche spoke of man becoming the superman, but guys like arjuna, karna, were not fully enlightened but were born godmen,or half god half man.and krishna himself trained arjuna, and arjuna become a godman, through consiousness powers,i can gain the strength and precision that guys like arjuna and karna had.they could shoot a bow in the bulleye from miles away almost like in superhero movies.infact guys like arjuna were like or even more powerful that superheros like hulk ect….they could summon hailstorms just by will,i want this.to become a godman.or superhuman,so im training and doing yoga and meditating, and with swami jis power i can turn into a superhuman…..

  • Can you just do yoga for a healthy bodyno you cannot. I say yes you can. You can just do yoga and live longer and work efficiently than most of the humanity with yoga only.

  • Dude…seriously? 8% I can see veins in my abs and BMI charts show me at 8-20%. So touch to measure unless you pay for a submersion test……..

  • Everyone tells me to do yoga. I’m sure it does build muscle mass, since if you do 60 minutes of anything that puts tension on muscles, there will be a response. But it’s inefficient (one hour a day on anything is a serious commitment). And it doesn’t translate into anything else useful, physically. Like, now “studies” are saying flexibility means nothing for general health.

Not to mention that for men, being flexible brings zero side benefits. No one cares. It’s all about arms, pecs, and abs.

  • “took out some milk, took out some bread” Those are incredibly significant dietary changes, and they probably have way more to do with your fat loss than the change in your exercise routine. Exercise has very little effect on long term fat storage.

  • hey,if anyone else wants to learn about is searching for yoga programme try Nevolly Yoga Expert Nerd ( search on google )? Ive heard some decent things about it and my buddy got cool results with it.

  • Hey man, thanks for sharing your experience.

One of the most important principles in classical strength training/bodybuilding is progressive overload. Does this apply to your practice of yoga?

  • I have to share with you that I practice more of yoga and less gym, since I realized my body wasn’t able to gain weight. I know everything about the “gym muscle science” even more than their sympathizers -, however, I decided to love myself by embracing this sport. My results: got more elastic and selfrealized than ever before. Therefore, I recommend yoga:)

  • Today is the day when i have started my first yoga session with you. (11.06.20) I am suffering from severe scoliosis and i am gonna devote 25 minutes everyday to do some yoga. I hope i will get well soon!

  • Buiding muscle mass with yoga, what are you talking about! Do you understand what yoga is? Ultimately you are attempting to lengthen muscles not make them shorter. You have no idea what you’re talking about mixing western exercises with yogic poses. Stop thinking strength is a steel post and more like a tree that flexes and hey while Im offering advice worldly advice perhaps you could look up/read some text on what yoga means both western/eastern. Your body looks tight, small and weak, try getting longer, softer and taller.

  • This video could have been so much better if you were not wearing those blue cover shorts, just do videos in the compression shorts only, preferably under armour!

  • Pretty inspirational… Make your muscles say “hey that’s enough” and you’re good…. also, most yoga people i know try to tell me not to lift weights. It was a breath of fresh air hearing a different take.

    Also, your dog is dope.

  • I just lost my health insurance and my scoliosis is getting worse, my doctor recommended I start watching your videos and it has been life-changing. Thank you so much!

  • Do you know of any specific pranayama or poses that stimulate the glands that release testoserone and growth hormone? I mean, there must have been acnient yogi/warrios that did specific things… Like that lion fighting yogi in, “autobiography” of a yogi.

  • Oh my god. I have always been able to get into a deep squat but it has NEVER been easier or more comfortable to get into/ be in a deep squat before! 3 hours after this session

  • You are not a real yogi. You do yoga for looks and muscle. Totally wrong. But…..we all have our ways of happiness. But Yoga should not be taught for vanity reasons!

  • thank you thank you thank you I have suffered with severe scoliosis and do one your practices everyday. I am constantly in severe pain and find your yoga to lift me up and relieve some of that pain, you have helped me so much, and I am eternally grateful.. you are the best namaste. love you and Benji

  • What do you recommend when combining yoga with weightlifting? I do cardio as well, and play futsal and tennis, and I want to combine yoga with weightlifting..

  • I’m surprised that you are saying that if you only do yoga, it’s not healthy. Cross training, as you suggest, is great. However, some people prefer to focus on one thing and master it across their entire lifespan. Trust me, those folks that only do yoga are healthy as can be.

  • Thank you soooooo much for this! I have had moderate scoliosis since I was 12 and this is the first day I havent had back pain in years. I literally felt vertebrae popping into place. This videos worth to me is unimaginable. Thanks Adriene!

  • Hey Dean, I just want to say that your an inspiration to me and many other Yoga channels I’ve been yoga for 5 years. It has changed my workout ethic. I’ve been doing Power Yoga. I’ve been doing every week Sometimes on weekends I would switch it up by doing Vinyasa Flow.

  • Thank you Adriene for this yoga practice! It helped me a lot, I have scoliosis and your videos make my spine feel a lot better. Lots of love for you and Benji. Namaste.

  • I have mild scoliosis but have no pain. I only started having pain on the left side of my back (and sometimes lower back) AFTER I started doing yoga. Unfortunately, I read that most yoga postures are not good for scoliosis. Hopefully, this works:)

  • I love your yoga videos and have purchased several of your courses. Sadly I had to stop doing yoga several years ago because my hypermobility got a lot worse and I was having joint pain. I’ve been trying to get started again but there’s so many poses I’m afraid to do now when my joints are less stable and I keep messing up the flow when I skip and replace moves with other ones. It would make me so happy if you could do a yoga class for us hypermobile yogis with only poses and moves that are low-risk for us. I would instantly buy a course like that if it was avaliable.:)

  • I have a very minor scoliosis, too. Sometimes my back is in pain. But I have struggled with keeping my spine aligned. This has helped me very much and idk how to thank you.

  • It is so nice to see an older man, with clothe’s, and shoe’s on, thank you. It is disgusting seeing so many exerciser’s almost naked.

  • I remember my freshman year of high school football and we had a yoga class I thought it was super gay but damn I was wrong it’s hard I found a new respect for yoga I don’t do it but I over bulked and I and I was seeing if yoga can build mussel

  • Thankyou Adriene, today I woke up with severe back ache, i’ve been suffering from scoliosis since 2 years and nowadays the curve has been trying to increase but this video helped me feel better of myself. I could feel the massage on my back while doing this. Thank you so much. And I would love to see something like 30 days yoga for scoliosis. ♡

  • I am 62, not terribly old but I do have issues which mean I can’t walk far but I can do most of these exercises. Thanks for uploading this.

  • Ok Ik I’m a guy but this really helped me. I’m young and have back problems. I think I have scoliosis myself. When I stand or walk I can feel my spin going to far the the left and my right hip is our more. But this is incredible. Thank you so much Adriene.

  • Thank you for making this video I got scoliosis in December and I found this video it helped a lot my doctors said that my scoliosis is going away!!!

  • Thanks so much for your videos Adrienne. I have been doing this routine every day for weeks. It’s fantastic for the back. You teach so clearly and have such a warm personality. Best wishes to you and the beautiful Benji

  • im only 14 but my doctor told me i had scoliosis i was shocked but i can’t do some of the stretches it hurts my legs like my hamstrings

  • finally, something I can watch and do without having to watch some young person who doesn’t even need to do them… they could just get a job and stay busy on the farm! But too many of us have bought the farm now and need to be led by ‘one of us!’ yay thanks for being there.

  • Thanks for this! It was only when lock down happened that I had the opportunity to take care of myself especially of my spine due to scoliosis. This will be of great help

  • I mean the real question is can I build a physique like yours with only Yoga? Answer is sadly no. Still going to need some moderate weight lifting and cardio.

  • nithyandam.i need some help i signed up for an akashic record reading and i got an email giving me the time but NOT the date.when i open the zoom meeting there is no one there, what do i do?

  • Please could you do a yoga video for upper curvature/kyphosis?
There is so much yoga i cant’t do due to my upper curvature. Even sitting up right is really challenging x

  • I’ve been following the challenge and doing it after my gym workout in the morning. After this week I have to decide how I will continue to incorporate your training and tips to my regular routine.

  • Having had surgery for my scoliosis many years ago, I find a number of these poses difficult to do. My spine is fused through the middle of my back. The twists are challenging, and cobra and the lifting pose on the belly are nearly impossible. Any suggestions for alternate poses that can be done to stretch and strengthen the back? I do love your videos, so it may just be a matter for trying a different video altogether.

  • I know I’m a couple of years late, but I wanted to thank you for making this video! I have scoliosis and my back pain has been getting a lot worse recently, so I really needed this. Thanks for the help ♡

  • hey,if anyone else is searching for exercising for seniors try Loctavan Senior Fitness Strategy (do a search on google )? Ive heard some decent things about it and my co-worker got amazing success with it.

  • Good videos thank you. The last videos I looked at for seniors had them doing things that 50 and 60 year olds can do but not 80 and 90 year olds!

  • I am 28 years old.I have undergone a surgery for my L4 and L5 discs 5years ago. Their was a bulge in my disc and they had to cut off the blug in disc area. And I came to know that I had scoliosis then.I had a slight deflection. Can I do this exercise???? and get rid of scoliosis?? Is it safe? To do because I have undergone a surgery
Will I be normal again? Right now I am using a brace for my posture correction suggested by my physiotherapist. Can u do all this together?? Please do reply

  • Hello Adriene❤ thank you so much for this video, it helped a lot. I was wonderinf if this exercize will help straighten up the spine or will only help with the pain.

  • I was thinking this was for those have had scoliosis correction surgery, when you started bending forwards, I was like something isn’t right here? Any chance of a video for those who have had scoliosis surgery or should I just give up now?

  • Thank you so much! I have been practicing this routine for a few months, now that I’m in quarantine more that ever in the mornings, and it has helped so much to bare my back pain for the day. Your practice always calm me!

  • I was recently just diagnosed with scoliosis at the age of 25 (all thanks to getting xrays taken at my workI just recently started a new job at a chiropractors office!). My diagnosis shook me to my core, I had absolutely no idea I had it and just thought my back pain was normal. I recently started getting adjusted at work and have been really sore as my body starts to shift into new places that it hasn’t been in years! This practice helps tremendously relieve my pain and I’m easily able to make slight modifications as needed. Thank you so much, Adriene!

  • I hope I’m not the only one that is doing this for the first time (and actually had scoliosis surgery 5 years ago) and can’t do all the poses right. It actually hurts to bend my back completely in most of the poses, but I guess I just need more practice, thank you for posting this Adriene:)

  • Hi Adreine! My lower spinal cord went straight and I’m really thankful for you. But I stop doing this 1 month ago because of my hectic days at work. Then later on I found out that I have a sway back posture, I don’t know but it looks weird and it was my normal posture everytime I stand up. So do you have a yoga routine for sway back posture? I’ve search here in youtube and there’s a lot exercises for that, this was also called “Anterior Pelvic Tilt”, but it feels that my body will be much worse if I follow them even though almost all APV exercises are same but I went to your channel first because your yoga is definitely a real treatment and you’re the one that I only trust since my scoliosis was healed because of your yoga video. I’m hoping for you to upload a yoga video for sway back posture. Thanks.

  • Though this is the best video you can find on scoliosis but still we want more videos on scoliosis. Adriene please make more videos on scoliosis.. Please

  • You look amazing dude. Wow. I really need to back into. It’s been so difficult. I broke my back in end of May the fear is real. So afraid if feeling the inevitable pain adnt discomfort that will come as I get back into it. Eek

  • Hi Adriene. I have a wish, and I hope I am not the only one. Like a lot of people I have sclerosis. Exercise, and ou challenges are the same. Some Van get medicin to help, like secondery sclerosis and others cannot. That is the primeir sclerosis.
So it is different pressure. If you like me have the primeir kind, there is no cure so I have to fight.

  • I’m looking for something to share with my parents to do as they are self-isolating under lockdown. Their first language is not English, plus they don’t hear so well, so it’s really great to find a video under 10 min long with instructions spoken in a clear voice with neutral pronunciation, a nice slow pace and a visual background that doesn’t interfere with the demonstration. THANK YOU for keeping these all in mind for something that seniors can really use! <3

EDIT: sent to my dad who turns 80 in a couple of weeks; he said it really helped and was easy to follow!! Thank you!!

  • Sorry. Here I am again. We all need a lot of strengt, exercising hands. And kognitive abilities. I hope you have had some reqests like mine. And you will concider it.

  • When I think un yoga build muscles is like muscle control or some techniques, when an agonist muscle stretch, the antagonist contract. If the contraction of the antagonist is strong enough, two things happens. The contracted muscle get steonger and the agonist muscle are more stretched in a more efficent way. Since I Apply this for myself, my sessions are more effective in those two aspects. My body grow in the most natural way I think. But if you just think in asanas to be relaxed. Nothing happens you just assume a position, sometimes Even put tensión active in the muscle stretched are a good way yo strenghten and stretch at the same time. I don’t do yoga but I use Asanas to improve myself I think yoga people need to study other forms of training, like flexibility for gymnastics. They apply all those techniques with fancy names, but is a thing of common sense.

A very easy way to example this is the Upper body part of “eagle pose” isnt the same just stretch your Upper back with no tensión or motor control. Or contract the Upper back at the same time you stretch, or Even contract the pecs during the stretch of your Upper back. The same for all the asanas. All of them.

  • The pose you are doing is ashtanga and chair… that is used in Yoga and Power Yoga lets you mantain and build muscle mass; as you say, not the gym surplus but fittest.

  • I found out I have had scoliosis for years, thank you for this. I found that it moved rather fast paced between moves but what would I know, this is my first yoga session

  • I gained muscle weight from only doing yoga on the mat.
    60 minutes a day.
    Intense vinyasa fast flow.
That was first and foremost for me. And only a little calisthenics once or twice a week.
However, people actually thought that I lost weight. Because my body composition changed.
But the muscles I gained in my core, shoulders and arms is unbelievable.
And I have been lifting weights my whole life.
I’m so done with weights and I’m tired of doing repetitions.

From now on yoga is what will be doing most of. And maybe a little calisthenics.

  • Thank you (and to the nice man showing us the exercises), for taking it seriously and giving us a no-nonsense demonstration and instruction. It’s nobody’s fault to get older each year and it’s hell when your legs, feet, shoulders, back etc all ache, but these are good, gentle and helpful exercises we can follow. Thanks again

  • hey man i was reading up on the mahabharata and alot of the people there like arjuna and karna were superhuman, they were super athletes, alot of those guys had physical strength and bodies 10000x stronger than us guys today!krishna trained arjuna from birth, and the reason for the mahabharata was to elimanate all those godmen on earth, lets reclaim that,we can be superhumans with super strength occult powers, like arjuna and karna the greatest worriors to exsist on earth, arjuna was trained in all forms of martial arts, fighting fencing, physical strength, its very rare to see superhumans on earth today like arjuna, and no fighters today can even come close to them…….anyways you have powers, with swami ji you can literaly become superhuman like the godmen of the mahabharata, being able to lift a truck, shooting arross so acuratly, calling apon storms just with the power of your fingers

Have a wonderful day and stay safe Adriene ❤

  • My friend was a Yoga teacher in Scotland, with multiple visits to Yoga schools in India and numerous certificates over the years. He was vegetarian, very slim with no muscle mass (ectomorph?) but he was lean and defined like Bruce Lee at his peak and his biceps were rock hard; he put this down to Yoga stretching the muscles unlike weightlifting (his speciality was strength postures until the sweat was pouring off him!). Even saw very bendy women at his classes grimacing at him doing every single insane variation of the splits. He’s almost seventy now and retired from teaching last year. Big influence on me but we lived in different cities.

  • Excellent video! I’m a proponent of bodyweight exercises and walking. The more we move our bodies, the healthier we are. Average walking speed studies show that an older person’s pace, along with their age and gender, can predict their life expectancy just as well as the complex battery of other health indicators such as blood pressure, body mass index, chronic conditions, and smoking history.
