What’s the Best Time of Day To Workout? MORNING or EVENING?

Video taken from the channel: Health Chronicle

For some people, lunchtime is the best time to exercise, especially if co-workers keep you company. Just be sure to eat after you work out, not. Working out in the morning — especially on an empty stomach — is the best way to burn stored fat, making it ideal for weight loss.

Between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., your body temperature is at its highest. This may mean you’ll be exercising during the window of time your body is most ready, potentially making it. For example, exercise — there’s really no bad time to work out. Just 23% of Americans get enough exercise, according to new data from the U.S.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, so squeezing in 30 minutes on the treadmill at 5 a.m. or signing up for a recreational soccer league that takes the field at 8 p.m. is much better than not exercising at all. There are reasons why working out in the morning is really good for you, but there’s also evidence that afternoon and evening sweat sessions are great, too. Make sure to exercise often, stretch beforehand, and keep a healthy diet throughout the.

Some people feel that the best time to exercise is early in the morning, but others cannot even think of exercising till a few hours after they wake up. It’s all a matter of personal preference, as each person’s body clock and energy levels vary. It also depends on the kind of exercise that is being performed.

The Research Behind The Best Time to Workout Although studies regarding the optimal time to workout is limited, a few recent studies can help provide us with some insight. For example, this 2016 paper by Kuusma and colleagues compared the effectiveness of a training program performed in the morning versus the evening on 72 trained men. So if work/school/family/life in general has made it so that the only time you can work out is at 8am, or 8pm, or during your lunch break, or midnight, or before work/school, or after work/school, or any other hour of the day then guess what?

THAT’S the best time to work out. But when it really comes down to it, the answer is pretty simple: The best time to work out is whenever you can do it. Work It Out Together; Is There a Best Time of Day to Poop?

“The best time to workout is actually determined not by science but buy your own life and commitments. For example, if working out in the evenings causes family problems, because you miss out on seeing your children grow up, it’s a good time scientifically, but a bad time personally.”.

However, at around 5 p.m., your cardiovascular efficiency, body temperature, muscle repair, protein synthesis, and workout-recovery capability peak, so this is an even better time of day to exercise, especially if your workout is intense.

  • what kind of breakfast would be most beneficial to eat before hitting the gym? and how do you feel about eating after the gym instead of before? or even both?

Also, I just subbed your content is amazing, I came over after watching the video on Theo’s channel

  • I try to get in the gym around 4pm because I’m coming home from work. I know if I go home and relax I’m less likely to go back later. Plus, it starts getting super crowded by 5pm and doesn’t let up for a few hours.

  • I love doing 20 min cardio then 40 min of weight lifting. But I don’t want to be that guy who is sweating profusely all over the gym equipment. So until I get my own gym at home, I’ll be the civilized citizen of Earth and do weights then cardio.

  • What is a good time to workout and exercise that is question that finally in the morning is good for me sincerely yours Mrs Amber McCutchen

  • Chloe: Best not to do high-intensity workout in the late evening since it increases your stress hormones.
    Me who did exactly that for 3 weeks: S H i T.

  • Mornings are definitely the best for me. Hands down. My motivation is highest in the morning and it gets me pumped for the day. The last thing I want to do is go to the gym after work.

  • Hey bro so I’m on week 8 of your body weight program and my basketball coach is now making the whole team doing dexton crutchfields 5 week program so what do you think I should do should I pause on your program or do them both

  • The reason there is poverty in most of the world is due to a lack of capitalism in those regions. Property rights are almost non-existent in 3rd world countries and this makes open and competitive markets nearly impossible. The answer isn’t to just throw money at a problem endlessly. The answer is to help by educating on individual freedom and property rights which reduces global poverty overall. That is better help, allowing people to become free and prosperous, rather than just continuously throwing money into an endless money pit.

  • Not everyone is the same….some arnt morning people an some don’t have super energy in the mornings.. as long as u exxercise an its not left till late afternoon who really cares wat time u exercise

  • I like your story and I agree with it. Can you send me 2000 dollars by paypal to help me pay for my tuition fees?I’m drowning on debts.

  • Im a student from PH
And i want a time management our school starts at 7:30 am and ends in 4:30 in the afternoon and 5 -7 pm is my study time and 8-9 pm evening is my free time 9:00 pm i go to bed and sleep
So my question is,is it okay to exercise at 5:30 in the morning?

  • I don’t really care: I’m 50 and have been skinny-fat started lifting about 4 weeks ago, taking supplements like boron and maca root for T, and I’m seeing a difference (slow, but that’s ok by me) in my muscle definition if not size (yet). I don’t think the food issue will affect me too much, because I’m ketogenic. That said, I feel healthier than I ever have, and to me that’s what counts. Only think I take is collagen creatine doesn’t work for me.

  • The question of moral obligations really seem obvious on its face, but it’s not. There are acts which can be considered moral, yet not be an obligation, and vice versa. For example, you could become a fireman, and help lots of people. Or you could, like Singer says, donate your money. However, these cannot be moral duties because you are simply being nice without any reason. Now, let’s say I manage to damage your property on accident. I was playing soccer, and hit your window. Now, it’s more than clear that I should be morally obligated to pay for it. Why? It’s my fault. For something to be a duty, it has to be your fault. Otherwise you’re being nothing but nice.

This distinction has to be made otherwise we can tell anyone that they’re obligated to do anything and everything that’s good, which makes no sense.

  • I worked out fasted in the morning for last year and a half. Now With a new job I started training in the evening. I was able to build more muscle and got strength gains. I think it’s due to the carbs from my meals from earlier in the day

  • Good video. Personally I prefer mornings. The gym is quieter and no one is wasting time. In the evening it seems to be easier for people to hang out and take forever

  • This video is really helpful thank you Jeff now I can make my workouts better now I can fix my workouts to so I can gain better with everything

  • Wrong! You don’t need carbohydrates to fuel your workout. Working out in the morning on an empty stomach burns primarily fat since your carbohydrate and sugar levels are depleted.

  • Part of the problem is that some people are morning people and others are night people. I am a night person and have always been that way. I get my best work done at 10pm and can still fall asleep easily when it is bedtime. I am always very groggy when I wake up and it takes a few hours to get rid of that groggyness. Some people wake up super refreshed and love the am workout but by 10pm they are falling asleep. It is very difficult as a night person to become that morning refreshed person. It’s our inner time clocks that make us a morning or night person.

  • Working out regardless is good for you, rather morning or evening, but sometime life happens and different people are on different workout schedules to keep fitness in their life in some shape or form.

  • Im in 5days of workout now.. i need to do this watever it takes its painful but i want to achieve of what’s my goal is…fighting!✊

  • Great information. I have always worked out in the morning because of my busy schedule. Now I know what to do to optimize my workout.

  • I drink a ton of coffee in the morning so my performance is best early afternoon. You can’t take too much caffeine for an evening training session without it impacting on sleep.

  • I really don’t have time in the morning or afternoon cause i have lots of work so i go to the gym at night…and I actually am able to have a deep beauty sleep

  • I just wished she would have adapted this to a normal workday. I work from 8am to 5pm and have to do chores (shopping/cleaning/etc) after that so none of those tips really helped. I can’t do anything in the morning because I have to get ready to work, I can’t do anything at the afternoon because I’m at work and i can’t do it at the ideal time in the evening because I don’t want to stay up too late. I’d just have to make “exceptions” every day, except for the weekends…

  • Imo AM is great for mental conditioning. Due to our bodies recovering in our sleep we make more recovery if we workout before we go to bed

  • They said pre work out meals are good. It’s scientifically proven that working out why fasted is the best. Research it if you don’t believe it

  • im a morning person and everytime i did workout in the morning, i always get a good sleep at nightand i also did intermittent fasting, and i lose 4 kilograms for 4 months sorry for my english

  • Mornings if is going to be walking or running at the park, because of the weather is much better in the early morning like 7am till 10am after that it is hot to work out and I really loved the outside during summer

  • I know this is an old video but i think you should do a video on philosophy and what has been your approach to it
BTW, awesome video as all of them

  • Ik this has nothing to do with this video but I’ve been going back and watching ur vids that talk about mineral and vitamin deficiencies and there’s a lot of information. I was hoping you could do a full guide to minerals and vitamins kinda like your guide to keto and fasting. Ik its hard because everyone is deficient in something different and there’s so much information to talk about but maybe there’s a way to sum all of it up and hit the most important points and things we should be looking out for. Between your vids and all the comments and other info I’ve seen the lack of vitamins and minerals in our diet has a huge impact on our health.

    Sorry for the essay haha.
Thumbs this up if u want this kind of vid so maybe Thomas will see this.

  • This has been very interesting and has given me a different perspective with my workouts.
Even with the morning and evening statistics, there are so many variables, everyone is different and their lifestyles and jobs are different too, I work out in the morning because I can actually get to the equipment, at 5pm everyone is rushing to every gym after work so you cant do anything, the other reason is my body feels more fresh, I’m a sheet metal worker, I have to hammer at so many awkward angles that my shoulders suffer, which in turn really shows when I do any pressing or even a squat, so for me mornings feel fresher

Definitely take the info in this video into consideration, but in the end it’s still your own preference and when you can fit it in

  • I personally prefer working out in the morning. Evening work out makes me awake the whole night. Tired, but can’t sleep.
Thomas can you do a video talking about gaining muscle for women?

  • Thanks for the great info. I train in mornings where I’m most motivated. I have 1 cup of coffee pre workout, 1 during. I’m fueled up the night before, digested in sleep ready for morning. Have a great day

  • I like work out early in the morning. It makes me fresh. But these days are so hot & somehow I workout after my airco working at night. So my workout is comfy enough. Sleep is not a problem. I work out at 6AM or before midnight or even 1AM before sleep

  • Whenever I can. I work a split shift so its usually mid afternoon, its a great boost to get me through the second half of the day.

  • Evenings are better, but thats just me.I feel more switched on in the evenings and my body feels more prepared.I tried training in the mornings during a rest break over the holidays to get more out of my day, but did not manage to get the same result. Thanks for the video, helped me understand certain things of how the body works.

  • No offense, but… Put diplomatically… As lightly as I can… With utter and total regard to their feelings, worth, and their wonderful contribution to society, for which I am grateful: Morning people should die.

  • I’m glad that Chloe didn’t just shit on people who don’t workout in the morning. If the only time to workout was in the morning, I would never do it. Right after work is my optimal time. I feel like the worst time to workout is not at all.

  • Jump!!
Currently i have jumpers knee, it’s been 3 weeks since it started to hurt i hope i will be back at 100% soon (btw i’m doing rehab exercises and playing basketball)

  • I prepared empty stomach to do my 2hrs workout every morning 6x a week for intense cardio, hiit and dumbells workout and 1x a week for Yoga

  • So, what if a person gets up at 3AM, then works out about 1PM or 2PM? The afternoon is technically their early evening.

Shouldn’t a caveat be a persons schedule, & not the timeframe the moon rises & sun sets.

  • the experiment sounds off…the intake of calories for the one that exercises at night is from start higher in this case since shes forced to eat just before her workout…hmm = result not really right

  • I go at 1-3am after a nap and that’s because the gym is empty and I own the whole place taking up 7 machines with dumbbells covering the floor. If anyone walks in, I throw a 45lb plate like a frisbee into their throat and send them packing.

  • I would guess training later in the day gives slightly better results because sleep better coencides with your post workout anabolic state.

  • All cleverly packaged to sell products and make money, albeit information designed to suit sheep. Good clean food, exercise with quality sleep is all that is needed.

  • Thomas, can you please quote me some studies proving fat loss wa greater in guys exercising in the morning rather than at evening.. I’ve just found those proving exercising at evening leads to greater muscle gains and fat loss also.. But I like that mood of whole day when I finish strenght training and sprinst on other days berofe 7.00 am

  • Hi!
So, currently I am doing a light workout in the morning at home. Fasted. Last meal around 10 pm. Fasting all day, heavier workout in the evening about 7 pm followed by a protein shake ot BCAA, and a cup of chia seeds and then meal around 20pm. Me and my girlfriend ( she is a vegetarian ) are trying to stay lean as possible. Am i doing something wrong in hormonal term and muscle gains?

  • You’ve said in your previous videos that your body is completely fat-adapted. How long does it take to be fat adapted and once you are, how often/how many carbs do you consume?

  • Falseeee I am disappointed the only way to lose fat efficiently is through intermittent fasting and evening working lead to more muscle fiber growth due to the growth hormone spiking during your fastm

  • i personally have 3 different workouts at different times of the day. morning (6am-10am i train basketball.. then from 11am 2pm i’m at the gym working with weights and vertical and speed… then in the evening (7pm 11pm i do a very intense basketball workout)

  • Hi man great vid. Im during my jumpers knee rehab and I was steping on big step and my knee just hurt very much. Du I take a pause fram my rehab?

Por fa chloe ayudame eres la unica que me podria contestar esta pregunta

  • I excercise during evening, usually 6 to 8 pm. I want to change my workout time to morning. But the problem is that I just cant wake up before 8 am and stay energetic. Tried a lot of time to rise up early but finding it very hard. I go to bed at around 11pm everyday.

  • I have absolutely no energy at all. I want to sleep all day and once it’s bed time I just lie there and can’t sleep. It’s so damn annoying.

  • The calorie thing is ridiculous. The blanket 20g carbs before workout is ridiculous as well. People, work out when it best fit your schedule.

I workout in the morning but I go to bed early. Some people will see this and neglect sleep to get up and work out. That’s equivalent to jumping over $100 dollar bills to pick up $1

  • Hey, I love your videos sir but for now I am a bit confused. In one video you said fasting is good for 3-5 days a week because when you fast every day your metabolism drops and you burn less calories by doing nothing. But what if I do the 16:8 fast and still get my normal calorie intake in those 8 hours. Maybe 100-200 less. I mean can’t I do that every day? Appreciate an answer. Have a strong day

  • Me living in New England: lots and lots of big hills

My brother and I: oh yeah we got locked out again, time to start walking till mom comes home

  • 4am or 10pm.. this way your be able to get on machines and weights without all the nob heads in the way doing 30 sets and sitting on there phone

  • When you can. QED.
Jesus I hate these discussions. Unless you’re a professional athlete, you aren’t wondering because there’s only so much time and you can train when you can, so you do it then. If you ARE a pro then you’re likely training BOTH, morning AND evening. Christ.

  • It’s really not about the time, it’s all about weather you’re in a fasted state or not, when you work out before eating your body will retain your energy level from your stored fat hense burning more calories, so if you’re working out, try to do it before you eat anything so you can burn fat

  • Start at 6:30pm and finish up at 8pm… just feel better and can lift more at that time… always have an apple and protien bar at 5pm with a cup of coffee as my pre workout meal… then eat dinner at 8:30 to fuel protien synthesis and a casein shake b4 bed… made that my habit

  • What is your morning? Is it the time you wake you or is it time based on world clock? A times my wake up time is 1300PM or even 1600PM to me that is my morning. Any one with a different suggestion?

  • One of the things I hate about your videos is that you don’t get to your thumbnail until the end of the video. It’s bullshit. You’re trying to make more money that way

  • SO HE IS ONE PERSON!!!!!!!

  • I can’t sleep for shit, after working out in the evening (unless it’s just distance cardio). Morning workouts give me energy for the day.

  • I’m on my 3rd challenge. I do most of my workouts at night and I’ve noticed massive improvements in my sleep since I started. I used to get about 5 hours, now I get 6-7 and a half hours. And my fitbit sleep scores have shot up from mid 50s and a poor to fair rating to around 80-85 and a score of good. I have so much stress in my life. I feel more relaxed after a workout so I guess that helps me sleep better.

  • I think it depends on when you have the most energy and your schedule.

I usually have the most pent up energy right after work, typically 5:00 pm 6:00 pm. All the stress from the day makes me neurotic so I have to nervous energy to release. It also keeps me more accountable throughout the day to eat well so I can sustain energy for the workout. I typically do a light breakfast, substantial lunch, afternoon snack, and then a light dinner (after the workout). However, on the weekend I do the workouts in the morning because I don’t have to worry about my work schedule.

I don’t feel exercise is something you should stress about. Do it when it’s right for you whether that is morning, afternoon, evening, or late evening. No one has the same lifestyle or schedule and overwhelm is a big factor to why people fail when it comes to healthy eating and exercise.

  • I work graveyard shifts and I’m exhausted all the time so my sleep cycles are way off one day I can sleep all the way through for 12 hrs and some days I barely get any sleep

  • No offense to your personal life but I think you should stick to information.

I think people like your videos because you’re quoting factual studies and we get results.

We don’t care how many hash browns you eat…

Maybe separate informational videos and personal ones so I don’t have to skip…

Just a suggestion. Love what you do.

  • Singer or MackAskill warned against close to home donations/disaster relief. Both are often not as effective for various reasons.

If you’re going to donate, consider comparing options using reliable empirical data about which option maximises your values/goals.
Ending animal factory farming is a priority.

  • Best time to workout is when the gym is empty, most of the times people go to the gym like if was a spot to do social media spending more than 15 minutes in any machine cause they are in the fucking smartphone!!

  • I like research based videos on training but they generalise. personally my best workouts are definitely always morning on empty stomach. if i train after food even 3\4 hours after food sometimes it makes me significantly weaker. when fasted I always lift at least 10k more on every exercise. Food makes me weak so if I eat later the more food in my system the weaker I get. I guess the science doesn’t apply to me. I’m pro science but a lot of the time it ends up as a generalisation.

  • I get dizzy and risk collapsing whenever I work out in a fasted state. I always try to eat like an apple before working out. Any suggestions as I continue to seek weight loss?

  • I find the gym can be packed around 4-5pm (this maybe after school early finish workdays), seems to be around when the body is at its warmest as mentioned. But you can emulate that with green tea extract thermogenics + dress warm.

  • Love your videos and explanations. I can definitely attest to morning workouts feeling more sluggish. Great to see some science behind it.

  • I work as a Groundsperson, a very physically demanding 9 hour shift so I have no choice but to hit the gym after work at night but I found that It gives me far better result overall.

  • Well I have 44 kg and I want 41 my goal i m slim but there is a little fat on my legs and butt suggest me the great video any of you?

  • You should do a philosophy podcast. You’d probably touch on politics. The reason you aren’t morally obligated to donate all of your income is because the probability of you surviving on zero dollars a year is pretty low and if you’re dead you can’t help people anymore. We are absolutely morally obligated to give to charity. It is morally evil to vote to take away other peoples money and force them to give. As a Christian I give at least 10% of everything I make into anybody who wants to give but doesn’t know where, just buy somebody’s food and the fast food line behind you. But also he gave a specific instance of a person you could help not big instances of giving all your money to a group and hope they help people with it. I don’t give cash to homeless people but you can buy food gift cards maybe McDonald’s five dollars and give those to people. If you are poor in America it’s a very high likelihood it’s because of drug use and addictions or you may have a severe mental illness and those people really do need help

  • Working out in a fasted state is best. You will get quicker results. Do your research. Its more likely you can work out in a fasted state in the morning. If you can do both it’s a bonus. Try a work out in the morning then a long walk to wind down before bed.

  • Me listening about workout facts…

Also me laying down in my bed looking as round as a lemon and having a double chin:…

  • I usually go around the afternoon, from 1pm-3pm, then head into work after I love the videos and always refer to them for help!

  • Now that I’ve seen this video I realize how bad I was doing my workouts. Before classes I used to wake up in the morning and work out, I lost five kinds in two weeks only doing one of clones videos (the full body work out part of the 2 week programa) but as class started I switched to night, and instead of losing weight I began to gain a little bit of weight.
I realized that in the morning, I tend to do more healthy choices. Can’t wait for my summer classes to en to switch back to morning work out sessions

  • Why do a your shots of people eating always include a side order of what appears to be white bread, rather than whole grain? White bread has almost no nutritive value while whole grain provides much more necessary vitamins, minerals and fiber.

  • I think it’s really important to look, are you more a late training guy or a morning… For me, for example, it’s more stressful for my body to train in the morning. We actually know that there is a hugh impact on your testosterone level from stress, so in my opinion, you should train when it’s the most comfortable for you

  • I think the reason evening is better might be because you are closer to sleeping, a significant period of time where you are expending minimum energy and will be recovering/growing. Working out in the morning you still have to get through the rest of the day.

  • well i guess those studies are for persons., that actually sleep in night, what about guys work in shifts/ that sleep difrent hours every few days, i mean when i work night, i wake up at 11morning, shall i go at 12? or at like 19? since at 22 i have to go work

  • Well, if you workout in the evening, then the gym is crowded, causing frustration in not being able to get a open bench/equipment, which leads to raised cortisol levels and discouragement and lack of muscle growth LOL!! That’s why I work out in the morning. I do use Thomas’s fasting pre workout (thanks Thomas) and this helps give me energy. I think as long as you have a good carby meal before bed, the morning workouts can still be good. If you are keto it’s a bit tougher.

  • Is it just me who hates being the chubby person with like NO metabolism. I mean, I wish skinny ppl who eat whatever they want cherished ther angelic gift.

  • Although, I’m not a morning person; it is better to workout in the morning. Anything can and usually do happen throughout the day that can hinder your workout.

  • When I work out in the morning I am completely exhausted. I can’t make it through the day. If they were 2 other people, the results would be completely different so it’s hard to make a decision based on this.

  • So…ur telling me that doing your workout at morning isn’t really good , today I am at 7th day of doing your workout shred challenge program, and my stomach is boom flat not really just the core is kinda out because I don’t have a really flat stomach.

  • I like working early in mornin anyways hardly anyone in gym around two, three or four in the morning so I really be more zoned into my cardio workouts and be more consistent which is most important. thanks for the knowledge

  • Been working out in the AM for a while. Prefer that over evening, after I get out the gym I definitely watch how I eat during the day. Whereas when I worked out in the evening, not so much. ‍♂️

  • my school starts so early in the morning at 7am and finishes at 5pm and i also have academic class after school so…i have to force myself to workout in the morning its hard guys cause u gonna feel weaker than workout in the afternoon:((

  • BE WARNED ended up in an Ambulance following 24 Hour fasting plus suggested vitamin cocktail of cider etc with a morning workout.

    I’m far from a Hater.

DO NOT go straight into this guy’s suggestions.

He’s a extreme athlete. Are we?

    Suggestions depleted my electrolytes.

    Be WARNED.

  • I once read that testosterone levels were highest at sunrise and sunset and it was suggested that around these times were the best to workout. Other studies will even show that athletes who were observed and asked to do the exercise in their mind, their same muscles fired. Imagine visualising lifting really heavy and getting big as a result! Either way, your channel is slick with clear narration and guidance that I certainly follow to a degree. “try some of column A, try ALL of column B…!”
Thank you for consistently making worthwhile content.

  • I’ve been searching for this kind of info for a while now! So happy I’ve finally found it. Thank you for such an informative video:)

  • I can either work out at 5:00 am or 11:00 am. My last meal is between 8:00-9:00 pm so when do you suggest is a good time to work out?

  • Superb video. I absolutely love the backed examination and how you follow the science, even when it seems counter-intuitive. I also really like the philosophy about helping others when you can!

  • Thomas, good morning. I want to thank you for all of your hard work on these videos, and the free amazing knowledge & tips you provide. You have changed my life for the better, thank you. I think I need some help. I have been doing a lot, but I am having a hard time staying organized, staying true to my ways, and implementing some of your preaching. For example, last night I ate my last meal at 7pm, this morning in a fasted state I worked out for an hour, 45 min later Im drinking black coffee. I will not eat until 5 or 6pm tonight. Question is, is that acceptable? Is it beneficial or should I eat after my workout? I know almost everything you have thought, but I cant always put everything in a plan. Thanks T, you the man.

  • Does someone know if you should do the workouts in the programs at once or can you do like 1 video in the morning and the second, third etc. later? Pls help, because I’m doing a 2 weeks shred program by Chloe and I don’t know if I have to do the workouts at once or one in the morning and the others later.

  • I started IF about six months ago in combination to fasting cardio in the morning and evening workout sessions. Due to time constrains I am now switching to morning workout sessions with cardio afterwards while fasting. What is the recommended regime for someone in my situation? Please advise, thank you.

  • I am working in night shift plz suggest me what is the best time for workout means i think i will workout after my shift over when i was reached home.plz suggest me.

  • As a guy that’s hit middle age, I’m curious about testosterone replacement. Biggest question is, once you’re on it, does your body produce even less? Are you stuck staying on it indefinitely?

  • Vidéo très intéressante. Very intersting video. Sehr interessantes video.
J’ai tout regardé et tout écouté avec attention. i watched and listened to everything carefully. Ich habe alles genau beobachtet und angehört.
L’une des vidéos les plus intelligentes de Youtube. One of the smartest videos on Youtube. Eines der intelligentesten videos auf Youtube.
    Merci! Thank you! Danke!

  • I honestly cannot believe this many ppl were brainwashed by this. It’s called calories in calories out. Doesn’t matter when you eat or train or anything. Fasting is a TOOL to help you be in a DEFICIT which is the actual pet that burns fat. Holy cow I’m just shocked this many ppl are actually gonna go do this and waste their time lmao

  • Hey comment section I’ve been trying to diy a functional medicine approach to being healthy, does someone know of a good resource to learn how to read blood work/ know what labs to ask for? My biggest fear is running low on a certain vitamin/mineral like calcium for example and doing more harm than good by actually consistently going to the gym.Functional medicine doctors also look into ancestry via services like 23 and me to ballpark how much fat/phytonutrients you should be consuming. if you know of a good resource I’d really appreciate a reply; can’t vouch for it but a promising looking site for blood test is for anyone that’s interested

  • I know i’m a little late on this video but I had a question if anyone can help that would be awesome. I’m currently working out in the evenings but decided i’m going to get into working out early AM’s. Should I be taking a protein/ calorie shake after my workouts like I usually do in the evening or should I wait until the afternoon based on the interm fasting schedule?

  • For us 3rd shifters, for all your videos (not just this specific video), could you start including referencing sleep/wake times rather than just morning/afternoon/night? My “morning” is typically 5pm or later, while everyone else’s is more like 7am. By “morning” you mean around an hour after waking up? “Afternoon” more like 4 hours after waking? “Night” something like 10-12 hours after waking?

Anyway guys, in case if the video wasn’t clear. Hiit workouts or resistance training are really great for boosting metabolism. It helps to burn fat when you’re at rest (even when you’re not exercising).

  • Thomas, can u do videos with lets say Harry Potter mantle instead of these shirts? Because everytime I look at your videos I understand how far away I am from the looks I want

  • Wtf, ruin your clothes and late to shopping is reason enough not to save a child? Wtf, why are you bringing this up? I assume most people that can swim would do it or am I wrong?

  • I prefer to train in the morning because as a Type 2 diabetic my blood sugar numbers tend to be at their highest during that time, but go way down after my workouts. Due to scheduling reasons though most of my workouts lately have been in the mid afternoon.

  • What about the protein synthesis? Does it makes any difference if you train in the morning or in the evening? I mean, if you train in the morning then you eat at least 2 or 3 times after the workout. Does it matter?

  • Morning workout is less better than evening because you already eat 2 meals,
But if you take good preworkout meal in morning then the morning and evening workout are same!

Remember consistency is key to gains!

  • I mainly workout in the morning. It’s my ritual. I’m a cyclist and always got up before the cars got on the road. Been doing intermittent fasting and hitting the gym in the morning. It’s been great for me.

  • Body temperature rises naturally throughout the course of the day and there’s about a 2 hour window of natural grogginess (where peak physical and cognitive performance cannot be achieved) that comes after waking as well. Both factors, I would imagine, would play a role in favor of afternoon and evening training!

  • i get alot stronger in the gym when my stomach is empty so training in the morning is best in a fasted state, also burn shit loads of fat too if you want to cut

  • Good video. New subscriber here:)
One point though that you’ve mistaken in though; LH is not a testosterone precurser ( 3:30). It stimulates test synthesis but is not a precurser in the biochem pathway of test production.

  • Summary:

Morning workout is best for fat burning (because you are fasting and your glucose levels are depleted)

Evening workout is best for building muscle (because you have eaten through the day and have more energy to go harder)

  • When you say morning, does it mean wake up time? Some of us work overnight and wake up around noon. I’m usually at the gym within an hour of waking up and have always noticed more energy. If I wait more than one hour I feel my energy lowering. What is the sweet spot upon awakening?

  • I know this has nothing to do with the video but I have a question. When you began training, how long did it take for you to notice considerable aesthetic results?

  • ThomasI’ve heard that exercise at night can negatively affect your sleep quality. I prefer to train in the morning, but if I wanted to exercise at night to reach a specific performance goal, do I need to worry about this affecting my sleep quality and overall testosterone levels?

  • I’m a single mum so my day times are so busy, but I’ve found that I can work out late at night before bed without it upsetting my sleep, and it means I don’t raise my cortisol levels in the day when things can already be pretty stressful… So it works for me, but is this OK for my body? The other thing is it often means I’m hungry after any tips for hunger pangs late at night after a work out? As I go to bed maybe an hour after I finish so probably not good for digestion to have anything at that point? Any tips would be amaze x

  • Cardio opens AMPK pathways which promote fat loss and catabolic aerobic states.

Weight training opens the mTOR pathways which promote hypertrophy and protein synthesis in anaerobic states. If at all possible, proper cardio on a separate day.

As for training time, I can run at 5am especially if I eat junk the night before, but weight training I feel best around lunch time. Energy/hydration does feel lacking first thing, even in a calorie surplus most days.

  • Fasted morning cardio means increased blood flow to the stomach, and catecholamines can reach beta 2 adrenergic receptors on fat cells in the stomach more efficiently.
I’m mainly looking to gain lots of muscle though with good performance, whilst losing some fat and keeping fat low. I guess if you eat a surplus the day prior then train fasted in the morning, you should have a good amount of energy still to train muscles hard? I also prefer training on an empty stomach provided there’s enough energy, because even eating something light like oatmeal with whey protein, it can give me indigestion and feel like it’s talking long to go away (makes me feel a tad like not doing anything physical).

  • So what if I work third shift? That’s always been kind of an issue is when to work out I would assume it’s after sleep but I could be wrong

  • I used to be obese and I did HIITS for 20 min as soon as I was done weight training, 5 days a week. Lost 87 pounds in 3 months. I cut my daily calorie intake by 500 calories and would still eat pretty much whatever I wanted. I was eating a snickers bar every single day. But, I would never eat anything deep fried at all. So I would get a cheese burger and some chicken tenders for example, but no fries. I lost a ton of weight, and performed better and better at the HIITS as time went by. I only saw positive results doing cardio after the weight training, including a ton of fat loss and Yes I gained a very significant amount of muscle in that 3 month period. I got those newbie gains. I would say that I prob gained about 10 pounds of lean muscle. Some of my weight lifting coworkers were implying that I was taking steroids. Which I def was not.

  • Ah, I see that this video got cut. No wonder that I cannot find some information that I’m looking for.
I already thought that it was probably in the other video, but then I googled this video and the duration is different with the one on youtube, so now I got it.

  • a child was drag out to sea and my first reaction was to go in and save him. Man i can tell you not fun at all. the currents were so strong but i was able to get the child to safety but i ended up getting dragged back out to sea, got caught in a rip and struggled to swim my way back to shore i gave up after 30mins of hard nonstop swimming. Seeing flash of lights and all these flash backs of family and friends. Untill a Lifesaver came and pulled me back to shore i thought i was going to die. Got home told my parents and they acted like it wasn’t a big thing lmao

  • Anyone else basically a vampire when it comes to training? When I lift in the morning, my overall performance takes a dip, but in the evening I absolutely CRUSH it.

  • Wow, your channel is such a huge load of useful information and your explanations are so in-depth yet relatively easy to understand, where have you been all my life:)

  • I feel im the only one in the comment section who works out in the after noon lol i work in the morning and my gym is super packed at night i end up wasting time waiting for equipment to use its annoying but im still making gains

  • Damn Ive been doing morning workouts (the 25 day thigh slimming challengehigh intensity) after walking my dog w/o breakfast whoops

  • As a lifeguard you’re taught to never jump in to save a drowning person because they’ll pull you under and drown you out of sheer panic. I totally understand the moral question but the situation in itself could lead to you dying so that would be contradictory to the whole “it wont have any bad effect on other people” also you can save a suicidal person and get sued. So i dont think the question is ever this easy. If it was a small fountain and a child was drowning that could easily be saved without hurting yourself fatally or someone else then yes you would be, in my opinion, morally obligated to save the child. In saying all of this, i would save the person regardless of bodily harm to myself because thats the kind of person i am and the kind of person i was raised to be. The question of morality is never black and white like this, theres always so many variables that people get lost in protecting themselves that they dont want to help others. This is why hitchhiking is basically nonexistent in the states now. I would love an answer to how to handle the complete untrustworthiness strangers have for each other nowadays. My parents said people used to trust each other more often than not. Nowadays it seems the polar opposite, its few and far in between you find someone trustworthy and its hardly ever in a stranger.

  • Since you like moral philosophy, I’m going to play devil’s advocate a bit as I also like moral philosophy.

Morality is the prescription of a set of personally held values which pursue eudimonia. A man who flourishes is one who pursues the good is one basic assumption of moral theory as flourishing is the good in the conception of most moral philosophers, but a man is not always acting immorally if he does not act towards the good, he could be not acting which is always merely amoral as not acting cannot pursue anything as only nothing can come from nothing. No one is obligated to do anything beyond provide for their own survival and that is only mandated by biology and biology can motivate not doing that at times as well. Would it be good to save the child? Yes. Is it obligatory? Not necessarily, because being moral isn’t an obligation. Is it good? Well obviously, but not acting can never be immoral as not doing something can neither be good nor bad. It can’t cause the good and it can’t caused the bad. Non-action is always amoral. Drowning the child is immoral. Not preventing the child from drowning is amoral. Not stopping a drug dealer from dealing dirty heroin is not something that causes the dirty heroin to be sold. The two people involved in the sale made choices and actions that caused the exchange. You are not responsible for the exchange in any way as you are a complete third party. There is no reason why anyone needs to get involved so there is no obligation to get involved. Would it be kind of you to get involved and would someone who is pursuing eudimonia get involved? I’d say so, but is it mandated that to be a good person, they must get involved? Most certainly not. Imagine this for a moment: the drowning child is drowning because they never learned how to swim due to some fault of their own; they had every possible opportunity to learn to swim and simply made the wrong choices or couldn’t learn the skill adequately because of some hand that nature delt them. Who is responsible for the child drowning? If you didn’t cause the child to drown, you’re not logically or morally responsible for the life of another. What is it would be more beneficial if the child died? They might be the next baby Hitler for all you know. Similarly, if someone is ill entirely by their own mismanagement of their body, is it society’s responsibility to care for them or would it be better for society if they were held responsible for their actions? Our sympathy is almost never a logical justification for our actions.

  • QUESTION: Thomas so are you saying for a better change in body composition (losing fat) its better to wait in a fasted state as long as you can during the day then work out to get the bets results? I usually workout by 11am in a fasted state and then dont eat till 1pm (first meal of the day). Now I can push my work out back a couple of hours if this will benefit me till 1pm then eat like at 2pm. Will this make any significant difference? Thanx. Another great video.

  • Wen I run within 5 minutes after waking up, I lose weight super fast. My body just seems to have a faster metabolism with a little running or jogging

  • I don’t have time to workout at morning, cause I have to go to ground at 4 am if late my coach will punish me though I workout there too much looking at coach’s stick but I want abs as soon as possible it has been too big because of lockdown.

  • Knowing the difference between morality and ethnics, the latter, one would contemplate, the former, there is just a reaction to the situation.

  • Jeff, I really appreciate your videos I dig how you included that philosophy, morality, and helping with the hurricane relief. Keep up the excellent work and thanks again for your highly informative posts!

  • I actually love to workout both in the mornings, and at nights. Weights in the mornings/ early afternoons, and taekowndo at nights for three times a week. Which is Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

  • Great content! I legit live based off of your videos. Dieting, vertical training, hip and ankle mobility, upper body workout! My man does it all!!!

Also I’m really looking forward to the basketball weighted upper body program. Any idea when you’ll release that? Keep being great!!! Thank you!

  • A bunch of people were OK with slavery in the United States. That doesn’t make it any less evil. The same token a lot of people are OK with the abortion and that doesn’t make that any less evil. People in society always vote by drowning children except current people stand on the shoulders of great people with blood cultures to a truer and better morality and then they want to judge people in the past while they are turning a blind eye to something just as evil. Value all human life, except if you’re defending your life or they committed and egregious crime possibly. Not a big fan of letting people who sell 12 year old girls a sex slaves to live if there is evidence they’ve committed the crime.

  • If you work a schedule that rotates does it make a difference if you do a fasted cardio or workout in the afternoon because you worked overnight and slept afterwards and got your workout in when you woke up versus you worked in the afternoon so you went to the gym after you get out of work and then go home and go to sleep?

  • Better performance in the afternoon is actually to do with circadian rhythm. We are strongest at 5-8pm.

It’s similar to how going to bed (and sleeping) between 9pm-12pm promotes melatonin (which is needed for hormone regulation), thus resulting in more testosterone.

  • Hi Jeff.. Nice video. I remember Keifer talking about this before and he mentioned the evening was better due to the increase in core body temperature so you would be stronger in the evening.

  • I wake up at 7 am to go to the gym cuz there aren’t many people in the gym at that time. Also once I’m done (around 8 to 8:30) my college breakfast opens up so I can be the first one there. It’s perfect

  • Conclusion (based on Jeff’s excellent research and my own personal findings)

    Early in the day
Light cardio warm up followed by a low intensity lightweight technique oriented workout with a focus on functional strength & mobility 30 mins max.

Intermittent Fasting/yoga/meditation (connect with Gaia and earth yourself)
Jot down your goals for the day in your journal.

    Evening time
Snort a line of Pre-Gains post pre intraworkout predigested peptodismal-peptides
    Pop a dick pill
Beast mode at the gym 45-60 mins
Chug a steak & rice smoothie
Text the wife on the way home from the gym that you popped a dick pill & that that and the pre workout caffeine is still up in yo dick.
Bust a viagra nut and decaf yo dick her ass and tell her how lucky she is to have a real man like you.

Open up your journal and reflect upon your day. Retire for the night with a feeling of gratitude to all and everything.

    Lights out

Oh fuck, I forgot the fish oil

  • I go around 2pm since I work a night schedule and I can see a difference in my self all natural no pre workout or anything just eating right and lifting weights

  • We have the ability to help but the bystander effect will always play in our psyche reaction. People may have answered that they would help the child if people were walking by but we’ll never know, Kitty Genovese thought everyone around would have helped but she was stabbed 50 times in broad daylight and no one did anything.

  • i Prefer working out in the morning because its more consistent especially with school, as long as you have a protein shake, eat a small meal and warm up properly i don’t really see much of a difference, just my 2 cents

  • Your vascular system is more “warmed” up later in the day than in the morning, so your performance is typically better later in the day.

  • Bro always with the great share and you’re absolutely right about training times. The same thing happens to me, when I play basketball mornings take forever to get elevated but evenings it’s so easy. Definitely I look forward daily to your posts. I hope one day I get to do a workout with you, play some ball and even do a YouTube video together. Keep up the great work bro, keep growing

  • What about doing weight training and cardio on split days? Is that better, worse, or have the same effect as doing cardio after weight training?

  • Hey can anyone help me with this?
I never worked on cardio in my life. I always lifted weights because my old gym didn’t have the equipment nor did I think cardio mattered. Now i had given myself a Month of break and now I’m back to an old gym, should I start cardio and do weights or should I just continue weights. I’m scared I’ll end up losing my mass and I am training for mass
    What should I do?
    ( Sorry for the grammar)

  • “justice is subject to dispute. Might is easily recognized and is therefore not disputed. So we cannot give might to justice, because might has already gainsaid justice.”

  • I just did a quick experiment and transitioned one week from afternoon trainings to morning trainings. I feel slimmer and more energetic throughout the day

  • Could you split your workout up do a little bit in the morning then the rest in the evening that would help me have more time at night for other stuff

  • I wake up at 5am. Hit gym right away and back home by 6.30am. Then start work at 8am. Because I wake up so early I dont eat. I jut have half a teaspoon of honey and some coffee. So far so good. Losing weight too. For those that work out first thing in the a.m, so you eat anything before you go? Does it make difference? Whenever I’ve eaten before working out I feel mehh

  • At the opening of the video, Peter Singer’s paper, is a great example closed minded think and the corruption effects of the modern first world.

  • Training in the evening? You mean after work when I’m already tired? Maybe the guys in the morning trained as soon as they woke up. I would do terrible if I trained like that. I need at least 2 hours to eat and fully wake up in order to have a good training session.

  • Hey Jeff, have you ever taken part in an exercise/diet research study (either as a researcher or participant)? If not, have you considered doing so?

  • I follow your channel, I do some of your workouts and like your contents, however you talk only about the male gender how about including women info too thx

  • Thanks for all your awesome videos. Also great to hear that you love philosophy.

For me everything comes down to worldview which everyone has and is built on certain assumptions about reality.

FWIW, here’s a debate with Peter Singer:

  • Dude, nice side note on morality to kick off the video. It’s awesome you included the link to the charity. The ideas of moral accountability and moral obligation are interesting though I’ve always leaned toward the discussions on cognitive biases and the debate over free will. Side note I end up sharing nearly every vid of yours I watch with one client or another. As one of my younger clients (14 yr linebacker) so eloquently put it we like how you and your channel are more then “just another meathead on YouTube.”
